The Ou Honsen line stretches from Fukushima Station (Fukushima Prefecture) through to Aomori Station in northern Tohoku.
In 1992, the Yamagata Shinkansen line opened, using the Ou Honsen tracks, and the section between Fukushima Station and Shinjo Station is sometimes called the Yamagata-sen.
The name of the line comes from the historical regions of Mutsu (陸奥） and Dewa (出羽) with the line passing through Dewa and connecting both ends of Mutsu.
