Sado-shi Daira is the only operating ski hill on Sado Island (Sadogashima) in Niigata Prefecture. It is located in the northern region of the island. A ferry connects Sado Island with Niigata and Joetsu.
In January 2018, Sado-shi Daira enjoyed a 'renewal opening' with the introduction of a 289m long pair lift ('Dream Pair lift'). This lift is apparently the only pair ski lift on a remote island in Japan. The introduction of a new lift encouraged more people to visit, but unfortunately it also meant that less people went to the other small ski hill on Sado Island called Wonder Valley Sado. That ski hill is no longer operating.
Niigata Prefecture is located in the central region of Honshu to the north of Tokyo and has a 250km long coastline facing the Sea of Japan. Convenient transportation links make Niigata very easy to get to from Tokyo and other surrounding regions. There are over 50 ski and snowboard resorts in Niigata Prefecture, ranging from small one-lift hills to some of the most well-known and popular ski resorts in Japan. While they are dotted around the mountains of the prefecture, most are concentrated in the southern regions - in particular the Yuzawa town and Minamiuonuma city area in the Chuetsu region and Myoko city in the Joetsu region.
