Myoko is the name of a city in Niigata Prefecture, but it is also the name that many people associate with a number of ski and snowboard resorts located on and around the beautiful Mt Myoko in the south west region of the city. The region famously often receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in Japan. Myoko is located fairly close to a number of other popular ski and snowboard resort areas in neighbouring
Nagano Prefecture including Madarao Kogen, Nozawa Onsen and Shiga Kogen (
regional map). It is also a popular onsen hot springs and nature resort all year round and in recent years there has been a large increase in the number of visitors from overseas.
Niigata Prefecture is located in the central region of Honshu to the north of Tokyo and has a 250km long coastline facing the Sea of Japan. Convenient transportation links make Niigata very easy to get to from Tokyo and other surrounding regions. Most of the larger ski and snowboard resorts in Niigata Prefecture are concentrated in the southern regions around Yuzawa town, Minamiuonuma city and Myoko city.
