Visited Mt. Jeans in late December, 2008, on the day after a snow storm. I think it may even have been their first or second official day open of the season, due to a late start waiting for snow that year. It was a beautiful, sunny day.
The resort is very easy to get to by car, just 20+ minutes off the Tohoku Expressway. Quicker to get to than Hunter or Edelweiss even if coming from the south,
Nasu Onsen Family ski area is a place to teach your little kid how to do the snowplow and ride a chair lift, while getting your ski legs back after a decade(s)-long hiatus. It doesn't pretend to be more than that (just look at the name), and it is perfect for that.
Not too expensive, reasonable rentals, and small enough that nobody can get lost from view for long.
I've lived in Tochigi for a few years and never bothered to go after hearing nothing special from people who have been there. As I wrote above there is a very handy shuttle bus service. But both times I have been its been real busy and with only a small handful of runs and slow lifts it wasnt an action packed day. Mind the waits were only a couple of minutes. They closed the gondola when it got windy on
