Have you ever cheated on your partner?
That's how I felt today - I normally go to the yuzawa area as am most comfortable with it. Know where to go, which places have the best conditions, etc. But thought this season I should try some other places, and this came up on the JR site, 7500 for shinkansen and lift pass. But something felt wrong.
Wow! Cheap!
Now I know why.
I managed to get up for 1st tracks, only to find the bottom |

I didn't enjoy it as much as the first time. The lifts were very slow and was crowded.
Some lifts stop moving very early (15:30 the first one) I expected some more action, the good thing was near the resort, it has plenty of stores to go shopping.
Finally I think I'm not going back to karuizawa - Okutone here I go!! |

This was the first day of the season and only here and Neaba seem to be open this early.
The course open was a beginners course in front of the rental building. The snow was all man made on a grass base. It was about 20 metres wide at the widest point. The slope itself was not ridiculously crowded owing to the fact that it was serviced by one fairly slow double chair. It was about a one minute run if |

Well, I'm sorry to say that I actulally worked here part-time. It was a rip-off then, too! No pass or discounts! I could only ride when i had my uniform on!
OK, here's the low-down. You can walk from the shinkansen station (right from Tokyo) to the lifts in about 10 to 15 minutes. But go to the parking lot first. Around 12 to 1 pm, some of the day-trippers have to make the drive back to Tokyo. Ask them for |

As an advanced skiier I found this resort to be pretty boring, because there's only one decent intermediate run, and one very short advanced run.
There are plenty of runs for beginners, but they'd have to watch their backs on weekends because it`s crowded.
We stayed in the Prince Hotel Cottages which are very nice, although many of them are about a 5 min walk from the main facilities (there is a shuttle bus, but it kept driving past us without stopping |

Good resort for a daytrip from Tokyo. In my case, stayed overnight at Prince hotel. Location of hotel great, next to the ski slopes/lifts.
Otherwise as accommodation nothing impressive, pricewise in fact a RIP-OFF!
On the weekday, no crowds allowed you good skiing |

Not much powder but still excellent snow.
Usually busy at the weekends |

Can get crowded. Pricey - I'd rather be somewhere else for the price, but if you are local its quite fun. Favourite run was far left with natural banks and 1 or 2 wee natural jumps...not as crowded.
On a weekday, would be good but wouldn't bother at the weekend. Small halfpipe - difficult to find (it's actually in the free-run park), lots of children to run over |

Karuizawa Prince Hotel review (submitted before 2003) |
Our first experience of skiing in Japan was at this resort. Walking distance from the shinkansen, comfortable, cosy chalet and good choice of restaurants. Step out of the hotel and there are the ski lifts.
The slopes were perfect for our family, wide runs and not crowded. We hadn't been skiing for ten years and our two children were first time skiers.
Thanks to snowjapan it was easy to find out all the information |
