Heading back to Kawaba this season |
Kawaba. It's only about an hour drive away from where I live, but I haven't spent much time there at all. I am going to change that this season though with at least one visit planned.
Thought I'd write down some impressions before so I can compare "after".
Bigger than I was expecting. Funky multi story car park at the end of a mountain road. Long lifts. Very cold. Nice snow.
Let's see how I feel about it this season. |

Nice place |
I have been to White World a few times now and it's one of those places that I would like to go to once a season maybe.
About 90 minutes drive from where I live, it's to the east of, and about 40 minutes drive from, the Numata IC on the Kanetsu Expressway.
There's a great big car park that you get to before the skijo - in fact you can't see the skijo before you actually get |

Small place on the other side of Hakkai-san |
Hakkaisanroku is a small ski hill to the north of the more well-known and much larger Muikamachi Hakkaisan resort.
It's one of those more 'local' places that are mostly used by locals including schools. When I went (just the once), it was actually quite busy with one of the local Uonuma schools obviously having a mass ski lesson.
Not much else to say about it really. Just a small, local hill. Probably good for families and children, beginners |

Tiny ski hill next to bigger brother |
Ishiuchi Hanaoka is a tiny ski hill in Minamiuonuma, probably just 1km or so from the much larger Ishiuchi Maruyama - and I believe one of the companies that runs that place owns this.
It's really only for beginners and families, and indeed only opens weekends and has lots of little kids playing in the snow at the base.
The interesting thing I found though was that they have electronic ticket system - the only one in the region that |

The legendary Mt Granview |
It's a legend. I live near it. It's Mt Granview.
Actually it's rather small and unassuming, but very friendly and there are definitely 'grand views' to be had |

Zao Onsen review |
Zao is a must visit ski resort in Japan.
The ski resort itself is big and perhaps best suited to people up to intermediate level - ie. there isn't much to challenge advanced skies - but there are a lot of courses to choose from and lots of long cruising courses. The resort is serviced by 3 Ropeways/Gondolas as well as a fair few quad lifts and other lifts.
The one thing I want to say about Zao though |

Maiko Snow Resort |
I timed it well and went on a very fine day with the sun out and fresh snow on the slopes.
I have been a few times before but not recently and this time I enjoyed it more than I have before... it's a really decent place to check out. Especially if you are upper-beginner / intermediate level.
The resort is basically split into 3 parts - the right hand side as you look at the mountain is the |

Kagura review |
If you ask most people with experience of the resorts in the Yuzawa area, many will probably choose Kagura as their favorite.
There's a number of reasons for this. Mostly the snow as it is usually excellent - and usually the best in the area.
There are 3 "areas" to Kagura, all using the same ticket. There's the 2 starting points, Mitsumata and Tashiro. Then there's the central part, Kagura, which is basically in between |
