Minami Furano

Stopped in to check this little place out whilst driving past. I could make out some lines bit higher up so figured it was worth a slide. Paid a whopping 200yen each for a single ride and headed for the one person chair-- joining the one other skiier out there.

Realised on the way up that the snow I'd spotted was from the top lift which wasn't running (not sure if permanently not or just cause it was quiet).

Snow! And lots of it.....
Some say this resort gets more than the close by big N. Can't say that for sure, but it does get slightly different weather sometimes and we've had a few great days here over the years when it has been shallow elsewhere.

First thing that stands out is the quick/modern lift system. I think all lifts are covered they are quick too... we also never seemed to be waiting in lines. Was definitely a nice change

Fun little hill
What a nice surprise. When we first arrived my first thoughts were this place was tiny....

Definitely more of a hill than a mountain. But what a fun one. It had been three days since fresh snow so we really came just to check the place out expecting the off-piste to be tracked out or sun affected. We splashed out a full 1600 Yen for a 3 hour pass (super cheap) and then set out to explore. At the top of

Friendly Feel
I really like this little place. We came last year on a snowy day on a day trip from Furano 2012 and had a ball - especially after being hemmed in over there. So I have to admit to a soft spot for the place.

This year we were met with a gorgeous blue bird day. There had been 5-10cm the night before, not quite enough to fill in old tracks but enough to refresh things a bit. The day started

Sahoro Resort

Posh but quiet
We had a lovely sunny calm day at Sahoro. There has been a good bit of snow the day before and the resort had been closed so we got very lucky with perfect conditions. All the "advanced" runs hadn't been groomed and had a nice shin high coating on them -- that stayed pretty untouched for the first few hours:

In the afternoon we scouted out the many tree areas that aren't roped off where we could find some

Otaru Tenguyama
Otaru City, Hokkaido

It's literally on the edge of town and offers great views back over the city and ocean. It has some decent pitch too. Probably some of the steeper "courses" I've seen in Hokkiado.

But alas not that long with only around 450m vertical. In fact I think true "beginners" would struggle on the green run accessed by the rope way - but the area at the top accessed by chair is a perfect pitch but might get a bit

Asarigawa Onsen

Otaru local
A smallish resort - this time just outside of Otaru (10 minutes).

There was fresh snow on the day we visited, and not the greatest weather. Good thing is we seemed to be a bit out of the wind. Being low and close to the ocean the powder wasn't as fluffy as other places but still good. Looked like they get plenty of it still.

It's got 4 lifts - although it takes 3 to get to the top.

Asahidake Ropeway

Stunning day on the volcano
We are more easy slack country riders more than full back country types so I was a bit hesitant to head to Asahidake.

We failed in our attempts to find a guide ---- but with a gorgeous bluebird day and no wind we decided to give it a shot. The views alone were pretty worth it - quite stunning up there.

Although "tall" the ropeway doesn't cover a lot of vertical so the runs aren't long. It had been
