Uber snowfall
This January has seen Yuzawa area get dumped on and not wanting to miss out on the snowfall I've been itching to get away. My usual spot, Kagura, was forecast to get buffeted by some strong winds so I had a look around the Yuzawa, Minamiuonuma area for an alternative spot. I've pretty much hit all the other Yuzawa places and wasn't feeling the love for them so I decided to try out Hakkaisan. I'd heard pretty good things about

Kandatsu Snow Resort

Spring-slush funanza!
This is my 2nd time to Kandatsu, the previous being a number of years ago. I won a ticket on SJ, of which I'm eternally grateful, but with the crappy all round snow year I had been putting off using it, waiting for better conditions. Those days have passed and so I thought I'd enjoy an end of season, bluebird, spring slush day.

Kandatsu is kinda small and compact but there are a few tree areas that would be good

Kiroro Snow World
Akaigawa Village, Hokkaido

Powder Powder everwhere
The resort itself is fairly compact, with the 2 areas of the resort.

The lifts were reasonably fast, although the gondola takes 15mins to get to the top of the mountain. The trees certainly have some great riding to be had BUT you should ride with someone who knows the place well because there are a lot of gullies and ravines that you could dead end in and it'd be very difficult to climb your way out.

The flat sections

Ice-bahn Scuppers Tomamu Fun
After winning some tickets from Snowjapan (and getting a re-up from unclaimed tickets!! domo!), me and some mates piled into a car and headed east from Sapporo to Tomamu. With the weather the way it has been recently we certainly weren't expecting to find any blower powder conditions, we were dead set ready for some spring slush! Unfortunately, nobody thought to tell Tomamu!! The recent conditions in the Sapporo region has been warm and sunny, resulting in some ace soft,

Sapporo Teine
Sapporo City, Hokkaido

Short and deep :)
Right, since moving to Sapporo at the end of March 2013, I've now ridden at Teine enough times to get a good feel for the place. One thing that has to be said is that this place is split into two distinct parts.......Olympia and Highland. They are connected by a long and winding cat track. If you are a beginner then Olympia is for you as the pistes are not too steep and are nice and wide........some great groomers to

Maiko Snow Resort
Minamiuonuma City, Niigata

Nothing like a free lunch!!
This was the 2nd time I've visited Maiko, thanks to the wonderful people at Maiko Korakuen resort and Snowjapan, I snaffled a free ticket for here. Last time I went, the snow condition was unbelievable.....very light powder and lots of much in fact that I felt it was TOO much for this rather gentle resort. This time was the opposite, snow was uber hard packed, icy and super scraped on the steeper sections. The resort itself is kind of

Uber Deep Pow
I had been meaning to hit up Maiko for ages....I usually go to the higher Yuzawa resorts like Kagura. The snowfall has been crazy of late and right enough there is tons of pow everywhere!! This IS lower though so its not as light as at Kagura etc but good quality all the same. Easy access from Echigo Yuzawa, free shuttle bus that coincides with the Shinkansen arrival from Tokyo.

The upper left of the mountain is an ungroomed bowl

Marunuma Kogen review
After a nightmare jam on the Kan-Etsu coming up here we didn't get on the snow until about 11.30am. When we arrived it was uber bluebird conditions and the views were fantastic. Snow was surprising soft and powdery for it being mid morning of such a sunny day and having had no fresh snowfall for a while. Resort isn't huge but the runs are pretty good, from top to bottom the run is pretty long and quite a lot of

GALA Yuzawa review
I don't know if I just got lucky but the snow yesterday was as good as anywhere else I've had the pleasure of riding. It just continued to snow all day filling tracks and topping up the powder. Visibility was pretty good for most of the day, I took an early lunch about 11.30 because the vis was a little bad then and at the end of the day the vis was down again but I didn't mind as the

Hotaka Bokujo review
Maybe its a bit unfair to rate this resort after this 1 day as it IS at the end of the season and the forecast was warm temps and chance of rain.

The snow was crap, it was slushy wet-cement in the morning, but hey it is spring and we were able to ride this point! After lunch the snow got SOOO sticky that everyone abandoned the use of the big kickers! Few people were able to get

Tanjigawadake Tenjindaira review
We picked the wrong day to check out Tenjin methinks!

It was beautiful and sunny but the snow was crud. In the morning the slopes were icy and bulletproof. I also didn't realise that the resort is tiny, with only 3 uplifts (4 including the ropeway). I was cursing and swearing this place in the morning and at that point had intended to assign -1 stars out of 5. However after lunch the slopes had softened in the sun and

Alts Bandai review
Spring has really hit Fukushima. Alts is a pretty big place with plenty to offer....IF it has a decent dump.

There are plenty of trees to explore and if you like the park, I can't imagine a better place to come because its got oodles of features. After all the X-Trail games were held here the other week. Up top the snow still resembled powder in a heavy used sort of way. I had fun here and would come back
