Disappointed
I spent a 3 days of good early-season skiing at Iwappara in Niigata last week on a reported 30-35cm cover, so I was expecting even better on the reported 55cm at Kurumayama.

I was very disappointed to find that the only snow anywhere seemed to be man-made, with plenty of rocks and grass sticking out of the main slopes.

Gave up the board after the first run, but by the second run of the afternoon the top of the mountain had turned to ice - I have never seen such bad conditions in Japan, and it reminded me of learning to ski 30 years ago in Australia.

So we gave up our ski plans and spent the next two days sightseeing around Suwa.

We'd booked early so were committed to going whatever the snow condition was, but that generous (bogus) 55cm official report has really put me off going back to Kurumayama. It would have been good for the family if there had been actual snow.
Date visited: From 03 January, 2017 To 05 January, 2017
Snow condition on visit: Ice on man-made snow
Things I liked: Free parking, good hot chocolate
Things I didn't like: Ice, man-made snow, 55cm report of actual 10cm cover
