Kiroro resort review (Akaigawa Village, Hokkaido)

Snow! And lots of it.....
Some say this resort gets more than the close by big N. Can't say that for sure, but it does get slightly different weather sometimes and we've had a few great days here over the years when it has been shallow elsewhere.

First thing that stands out is the quick/modern lift system. I think all lifts are covered they are quick too... we also never seemed to be waiting in lines. Was definitely a nice change after having been at some of the old resorts. This would of had us lapping the mountain in quick fashion--- but my main con of this place prevents that--- flat spots!

The top lift on the Nagamine side is fine -- but as a boarder I found the bottom half and the Asari side (the main side with the Gondola) a bit flat/painful. Some good pitch in sections-- and then a long flat run out back to the gondola or Asari top lift. Any fresh snow makes these runs very snow on a board. Coming off the top Asari chair it's also a bit of a walk before you can clip in too. Once you know the place you can factor this in (hold speed)-- but it's a bit tedious.

We found plenty of fresh lines all day--- there is quite a bit of unroped area to explore -- and lots of warning signs saying ride on piste only (generally ignored by most). But we also went exploring under ropes to find some more later in the day.

We stayed in Otaru - and road conditions permitting it's an easy 40min drive. Good thing they are so good at snow clearing here! We have checked out the resort and not sure I'd stay there. There isn't much there and I think the setup is a little awkward. Staying at Piano hotel has you on a bus/driving to get to the slopes. Staying at mountain hotel has you on a bus/driving if you don't want to spend a bit on buffet dinner.
