Possibly over-rated
I have been to Nozawa Onsen a number of times and it seems to be talked about almost always in positive ways. While it's certainly a decent place and offers a lot of terrain, I can't help but come back each time thinking somehow... disappointed. Perhaps it's the level of expectation. I don't know, can't quite put my finger on it.

This season the snow hasn't been all that in Nozawa. Not yet anyway (writing this on 18th January 2014). It just hasn't been as consistent heavy snow as it often is.

I went last week and had a good day. But that was it really. I hear lots of people say the trees are some of the best in Japan at Nozawa, and while I don't go deep into trees I can't comment on that. It may be marketing talk. It may not be.

Anyway my favourite two areas are the top Yamabiko runs and the Skyline run. The main problem with Skyline is getting back up there as there's no lift that's just servicing that area... you need to get back to the gondola and use that. One of the negatives of being a really big place I suppose.

Nociting more and more foreigners each year. No doubt the Shinkasen bullet train station at Iiyama that is opening in the near future will only increase that.

So. Yes, I quite like it. I just don't see where the overwhelming love for it comes from really. I much prefer Hakuba and Myoko.

Things I liked: Skyline, Yamabiko
Things I didn't like: Stretched out and time needed to get back up. Over-rated, somehow.
