Now, having lived in Nagano for the last 4yrs, and been the proud holder of a 47/Goryu season pass for most of 'em -I was surprised at what Kashimayari had to offer.
I've only been on good powder days, and I've never run out of fresh lines and good terrain.
At Kashi', I have NEVER seen patrol! Which meant me & the guys have been free to explore the awesome steep trees, clearings, gulleys, and ridge-lines hassle free! Which is refreshing, as all other resorts have gone bezerk with patrol this year, (not just in Nagano).
Also this year, it has not been uncommon for resorts (Happo/47/Goryu/Nozawa) to close lines thanks to high winds & bad conditions; plus, a new 'no-refunds' policy -can all add up to a pretty BUNK day.
Kashi' on the other hand, seems to be well sheltered and WIND-FREE!? No nasty wind crust -the powder stays where it's dumped! The only problems they have is solar. Which just meant ripping-up the south facing pow first -didn't really affect my day!
I suppose I should mention the fact that the ticket is a thou' cheaper than the other resorts worth going to in Hakuba. Queues for lifts are minimal -if not nothing. There's (apparently) some backcountry worth checking out -which I'm looking forward to. There are some reasonable areas for learing to board powder -for those of you starting-out in the good stuff. And did I mention NO PATROL?!
The only thing Kashi' needs, is a good cliff/cornice -something to throw myself off. I suppose I'll just have to keep looking!
