Renowned for it's onsen since the Edo period, Nozawa Onsen village has also played a significant role in the history of skiing in Japan, and to this day remains an important part of the Japanese ski scene. Skiing was introduced to Japan in 1911 by Austrian Major Theodor von Lerch and came to Nozawa the following year, although the ski hill was not actually established until 1924. It was in 1930 that one of the founders of Alpine skiing, Hannes

Good to see the snow falling again over the weekend.

We needed that matey.

The resort - well what can I say. Surely one of the best in Japan. Big, wide, sweet selection of courses (esp for beginners and upper inters) and that (for a change) charming little village at the bottom of the hill.

Well worth a visit. I got there at least once a week.

Good snow, and quiet a big resort, some very steep runs suited mostly to skiers.

But boarders, don't worry, there is plenty of stuff to play in.

Check out under a few chair lifts....won't tell you which ones, but it's not that hard to find........watch out for the ski patrol (they even speak English !)

Boarded at Nozawa weekend 26/27 Jan, Sat was sunny, Sun almost blizzard like, still not too cold. Sat was icey in patches due to lack of fresh cover though still plenty of snow. Moguls were very difficult.

Sun was better will decent fresh now, though became a bit heavy in the afternoon and slowed things down. Must recommend the Skyline, 5km run.

Nozawa Onsen ski resort is spread out over a large mountain, spanning several ridges and valleys and offering a great variety of slopes and conditions. There are some fine powder runs to be had at all altitudes, with long interconnected slopes of all levels so anyone can ride right from the top to the bottom of the mountain. This takes a while (and so does the ride back up!) Getting out of the gondola near the top, it’s hard to

What can I say - the best day of skiing that I have ever had was at this resort beginning of January this year.

Awesome place. Big, wide (well, not all of it!), great snow, loads of choice, great little village and atmosphere.

Wasn't too busy when we went as it was the week after New Year when most people were going back to work (haha!), so just perfect.

If you want to experience a Japanese style resort, this can't really be

Have only been a few times, but I really enjoy the atmosphere and location.

Am not good enough to sample all of the slopes, but the ones I can go on have all been superb.

Just got back from a fantastic weekend's skiing in Nozawa. Some pretty challenging runs on Skyline, Ushikubi and Schneider course. Great off piste along Skyline.

Onsen after skiing was fantastic and I fully recommend the Nozawa Grand Hotel to stay in if you are looking for a Japanese style accomodation. Great food.

Some good bars in town although lacking the European apres ski feel.

Must go

What I look for in a ski resort are short lift lines, a variable selection of wide open trails, great views, AND FREE PARKING!!!

Nozawa Onsen has it all between Monday and Friday. I'll never attempt another ski trip in Japan on the weekend.

There's something about 200km long traffic jams that make me sick to my stomach.

Nozawa Onsen is a wonderful way to introduce people to skiing in Japan.

The resort has not been too receptive to snowboarders until recently – and there are still some restrictions, but not many now – but it really is a good place to go skiing. The resort covers a wide area, making it very different in looks and layout than many of the resorts in Japan, which tend to be all squashed up in a fairly small area. Some
