Yuzawa Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun didn't appear yesterday, or not as far as I can remember seeing it, and it ended up just being a cloudy and overcast kind of day. This morning in town it is just cloudy but light snow is apparently falling higher up on the mountains with Naeba, Gala Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen amongst others saying that snow is coming down. Very light though - not the kind that will give us lots of new cm. The latest local forecasts seem to be calling for the day is a mix of cloud/rain/sleet for town and hopefully snowfall on the mountains later on with a high of around 3 degrees today which is a bit down from what we have had the last few days. But it's one of those times where it's border line - could be raining lower down while snowing up top. We're just going to have to wait and see how the day pans out. If we are lucky we might get some snowfall later today and overnight giving us a nice surprise for tomorrow morning. Really hard to call.

What does seem very likely is for temps to start dropping lower than they are right now later in the weekend and early in the week.

7pm update

After a bit of a miserable day with rain falling in town, I'm glad to report that snow is now falling and the local Niigata forecast tells us to expect perhaps around 10cm of snow overnight and perhaps continuing in the morning. I'll bring you the news tomorrow.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 9:23am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
At the moment there are clouds obscuring the peaks on both sides of the resort, but it looks like that cloud may lift as the morning progresses. Other than this the weather is looking good for today with calm wind conditions and a light dusting of snow overnight. The forecast snow from Sunday evening is no longer on the forecast, however Saturday and Sunday look to be good days with sunny conditions and little in the way of wind.

During March there are race competitions being held on Furano Resort. The following courses are closed for the competitions:

Panorama Course, closed March 5-9
Technical Course, closed March 5-9
Spies Course, closed March 5-11 & 25
Ropeway Course, closed March 5-11

Naeba Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 9:39am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow overnight bit it is cloudy with light snow falling this morning both in Naeba and up at Kagura. Nothing to get too excited about at the moment but it is -1 degrees down in the village this morning so feeling a bit more chilly than it has been. Hardly any wind at all this morning and while visibility lower down is decent the top of the mountain is covered in cloud so poor visibility up there.

We are hopefully of snow that makes a difference today though - especially tonight - and perhaps into tomorrow and also later on Sunday into Monday as well. A nice thick new layer of fluffy would fit the bill just right so come on snow clouds.... do your thing!

Resort Operations, 9th March (subject to change)
Naeba:
Most open - Splash Bowl and Mens Slalom courses closed. Also today the Takenokoyama top course and No2 courses are closed due to poor visibility.
Kagura:

Zao Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 9:47am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The view outside my window this morning looks much the same as it was yesterday really. Cloudy. The top of the mountain just about visible at times but cloud generally hovering around the top of the mountain. Temperatures remain about where they were yesterday and it is currently around +1 in the village and Utopia is saying -1 as of 8:30am.

No new snow and no wind.

Yesterday I mentioned snow was due from today. That still seems to be the case and actually things are looking quite promising. Hopefully it will be snowing later today and into tomorrow and starting to get much colder. Sunday into Monday is also looking very promosing in terms of snowfall, so it's the old fingers crossed that the forecast gets it right routine.

Hope to bring the first of the good news tomorrow morning.

Friday 9th March 2012, 9:49am
Weather conditions: Overcast

I have a good feeling about the weather today--not that anything is happening at the moment to warrant that. The morning started with sunshine around the peaks, even though it was cloudy/foggy below. The forecasts are all for snow for the coming days, and if it's going to do anything, we might as well get one last taste of powder before we switch over to the fun of soft spring snow.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 10:10am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cloudy day yesterday. This morning, as I write this in the Maruike area of Shiga Kogen, fine snow is falling. No snow accummulated on the ground yet and the way it is snowing now it probably won't but it is a promising start and while it is a mild start to the day again we should get getting colder as the day moves on and some decent snowfall is actually forecast for tonight. Fantastic is that happens and a new fresh layer would be great for the start of the weekend. Hopefully the snow might be coming down still tomorrow morning, then it is due to clear up somewhat Sunday but then a chance of more snow after that. It seems we are still due for colder conditions later in the weekend and into next week as well so could this be a blast of winter that we have been wanting? Sure hope so, and I look forward to hopefully being able to bring you some snowy news tomorrow morning.

There's not a whole lot to report this morning really - it's just cloudy again and no new snow to report. We are still looking good for some snow to fall later today though and tonight along with snowy conditions likely over the next few days into next week as well. It looks like it should be colder next week as well which is a good sign. So I hope to bring news of some snow tomorrow morning.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 11:23am
Weather conditions: Snowing Lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It looks like the wait for snow may be over as light snow/sleet is falling in the village at the moment. We didn't get anything last night unfortunately, but the forecast is now for potentially heavy snow up top tonight. Looking good for late in the weekend as well into next week.

No-one is really complaining too much and seem to be having fun with the on-piste at the moment, but I know a few that have been here for a while and are getting a bit itchy.

Yesterday was overcast for most of the day but no percipitation arrived.

Anyway hopefully as forecast this system is set in and will have some good snow to report for you tomorrow.

Hakuba Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 11:55am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, sleet > snow higher up
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It started off being just a cloudy morning with the top half of resorts covered in cloud, but since then in the last hour or so we have been getting stuff falling from the sky - borderline rain/sleet and it is now snowing up higher on the mountains. Along with clouds moving in visibility up on higher slopes has become worse as the morning moves on.

It's about +3 degrees at the moment at village level so we really could just do with that dropping a little. Some forecasts have us down for some potentially decent snowfall on the upper slopes tonight - enough to give us a nice new layer on top of what is out there at the moment. While it would make for a great start to the weekend, we'll just have to sit tight for the moment and see what mother nature deems worthy for us!

Snow conditions have been fairly icy up on the hills earlier this morning, getting softer and heavier this afternoon.

It's still looking like it will get a fair bit colder as we move into next week, and snowfall is also forecast for later on Sunday and Monday so it might be a good start to the week coming up.

Weather forecast for the weekend currently looks like tomorrow will be generally cloudy (snow still early on?) followed by clearer skies on Sunday before that snow I mentioned hopefully starts falling once again.

Minakami Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 14:41pm
Weather conditions: Overcast / Light Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Wet and grey in Minakami today. It was raining this morning down in the valley but has been snow higher up. Most resorts have got a bit of snow but it depends on how high up you go with snow up top and sleet lower down. Bit soft but good conditions on all slopes.

More snow on the way over the next few days. It is likely to be wettish over the weekend with slightly higher temperatures but from next week the temperature drops again and it should be lighter snow.

Niseko Now!

Friday 9th March 2012, 18:38pm
Weather conditions: Clear
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Sorry for the late report. It got pretty warm today with lots of sun. Spring has felt like it sprung. Perhaps we can hope for more snow! There has been pretty stable warm weather. Yesterday saw a bit of snow but really calm and docile weather otherwise. We have seen a significant drop in winds as compared to the past month. March has been known to bring snow as well, so don't give up hope yet. Yes the past few days have done a bit of bad to the snow, but we could easily get a meter storm on top of it.

With that said, backcountry travel is not bad at the moment. Most aspects are pretty safe. The only major concern is areas in the N facing that haven't quite consolidated yet. It's great visiblity so it would be nice to get around and see what Hokkaido is all about. Yotei isn't a bad idea either.

The forecast is still a bit unknown. Local weather is saying it could bring some precipitation on Tuesday. It should be snow by the way the temps line up. It really depends which system is going to overpower the other. Right now the southern flow from Korea is winning the wrestling match. We want our Siberian air to win! Cheer them on and hope for the snow!

Grand Hirafu / Hanazono:
Top - 405cm
Bottom - 200cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 450cm
Bottom - 200cm

Annupuri:
Top - 475cm
Bottom - 220cm

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -5C, no snowdrifts development and blue bird sky. Coastal data: SE2m/s at Benkei cape, 0.2m waves and 1021hPa at Kamui cape. Annupuri peak: SW3.0m/s -11.2C. Moiwa peak: -8C, no development of snowdrifts. Annupuri 1000m: 470cm snow depth.
Snowfall transition: Atmospheric pressure gradient is small. The wind remains under 10m/s SW below 1500m altitude. A cold air mass is flowing in and is making the surface of SE facing slopes under 1000m freeze.
Hazard evaluation: The general avalanche risk is low. However, surface slab avy due to braking crust layer is to be highly considered in steep slopes such as 1100m Backbowl sidewalls (E6) and Higashione sornice slopes (H8). Better not overestimate your own skills; be cautious and be safe. Cornices have grown huge and could collapse at anytime; better stay away. The snow will remain hard until the temperature rises. The course condition is good.
Gates: Peak gates are scheduled to open at 9:30am.
Caution: Do not seek fresh tracks in strictly off-limits areas. Ducking ropes is strictly prohibited in Niseko and those who do will be severely punished. Always use the gates to access the out of bounds areas. We strongly suggest staying away from valley bottoms where avalanches run through.   Read more ...
