Weather conditions: Cloud

Another day of snow yesterday. This morning early on some very light snow was falling, but that has now stopped and it is looking fairly bright. It's still cloudy but looks like we are set for a break in the snow for once.

Today is a national holiday but expect any crowds to start their journey back home in the afternoon. Having said that, the slopes that we saw weren't particularly crowded yesterday anyway.

The clouds cleared up this morning quite early on and it turned out to be another of those rare sunny, blue sky days and a great day to be out on the snow.

Surprisingly looking at some of the slopes around town, not that many people out there enjoying it....

The sun might have been out today, but it is back to the snow again tomorrow with 0-5cm of snow forecast from now until 9am tomorrow morning and snow through the day.

Resorts are continuing to try to cope with all the snow and in some cases it means that they are not opening up some lifts/runs due to the huge amount of snow and the threat of avalanche - they really should be telling you this before you get your ticket for the day, but we recommend you ask the resorts just to make sure.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Clear and sunny!

Alright! Monday morning has brought crisp, bluebird skies and not even a gust of wind. With little cloud cover, the morning seems a little colder than usual, but with the sun out shining, things should warm up considerably throughout the day. Today's weather is almost too perfect, and will definitely make for a memorable end to the holidays.

Visibility is high but so are the UV rays, so grab your goggles & sunscreen, pack some water and get out there already!

Natural Avalanches possible. Human-triggered avalanches probable.

Unstable slabs probable in steeper terrain.

Be increasingly cautious in steeper terrain. (>30 degree slopes)   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Blue sky day, not a cloud to be seen.
New snowfall: --

No clouds about today so the blue sky day, predicted, has finally arrived. Not so busy on the various fields either, so it should be a great day (for me). It snowed until late last night so there should be lots of nice pockets of pow remaining to be found. Karasawa looks like the most popular spot this morning with a few dozen cars there now. The whole place looks very nice indeed a real post card picture, blue sky/white ground. The locals are using the good weather to shovel the meters and meters of snow off the rooftops...again.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snowing

The snow just keeps coming! Looking at other parts of the world they seem to get pretty excited at getting a foot of fresh overnight but here it's just a normal daily occurence. It's almost getting to the stage where most of us (well at least those of us who live here) would like a little break from the continous snowfalls and associated snowclearing. Simple things like going shopping become almost epic when it takes near an hour just to dig the car out.

Even the nearby town of Kutchan now has more than 2m and the coastal town of Otaru is reporting 1.35m. It's amazing but guys still head out surfing near Otaru in mid winter! Wading through the snowdrifts on the beach adds a new element to the challenge.

The most important thing of course is the skiing out there is awesome with deep bottomless turns to be had right across the mountain. Something to cover the face is advised as the continuous face shots make it not only hard to breathe but your face soon gets totally frozen. Care should still be taken off piste as avanlanche danger is very high.

Conditions are expected to clear later today with a cold night ahead and then snow to hit the region again tomorrow afternoon.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Cloudy early on but they soon cleared and gave us a fine, clear and sunny day here in Shiga Kogen. There haven't been many days this season when the sun has been out and blue skies, so today was a nice change from the snow. It was still very cold though, especially early on and later in the afternoon so you really need to be wrapped up well to enjoy the day.

It looks like the snow will be back with us tomorrow.   Read more ...
