Galeforce winds yesterday battered Minakami blowing much of the fresh snow from exposed areas. So the depth of snow received yesterday varies from 0cm in exposed areas to up to 30cm in sheltered areas.
Today the winds have subsided and the sky remains overcast. The sun is expected to show itself by midday before clouding over again this afternoon.
Tomorrow may see some snow in the afternoon in the upper mountains with the remainder of the week looking fairly dry for precipitation.
Backcountry There has been between 30 and 50 cm of fresh snow in the last few days that has setlled on top of the old crust layer. Results from tests yesterday showed poor bonding between the old and new snow layers (CTM(11)@35cm). Caution is advised in BC terrain at present!
Sometimes life just isn't fair and having to work on a bluebird morning after 36 hours of continuous snowfalls is certainly one of those times! Heavy snow and strong winds continued throughout yesterday and the top half of the mountain remained closed. The snowfalls eased overnight and this morning it's clear and sunny with untracked slopes all around the resort. The strong winds have caused massive drifting into lee slopes with accumulations of up to 2m on top of the Jan 7 layer. Obviously this has pushed avalanche danger right up and it is unlikely the peaks gates or gate 3 will open today. Gate 4 into Fujiwara is expected to open after 10:30 but it is advisable not to traverse right out under the cornice below Higahsi One ridge. Another weak low is expected to cross the region later today and a little snow will develop this afternoon so make sure you get out there this morning and enjoy turns in the sun whilst you can.
It's a partly cloudy morning here in Nozawa today. Currently it is -4 degrees in the village and -9 degrees up on Mt Kenashi, where there is a light westerly of around 5 km/h. The snow depth is reported as being 210cm on Yamabiko and 160cm on Uenodaira, with no new snow since the last report.
Yesterday was a partly cloudy day with brief periods of snow showers but no significant falls were received. The snowfalls of the last few days have really helped to keep the riding conditions good especially on the higher slopes.
Light snow is forecast for the upper slopes today, but temperatures down lower will rise above zero. Similar conditions are expected for the next few days with warmer conditions on Friday bringing significant rain to the entire hill. Let's hope the forecast changes between now and then.....
All lifts are expected to operate today.
All courses will be open except Mukoubayashi, Kurokura and Hachiman. Read more ...

Blue bird, perfectly clear, no wind.
10 cm of new snow overnight, and crystal clear blue sky today. No wind either. Temps will remain below freezing, so it will be a great day.
Yesterday was the concluding day of the Furano Snow Festival, and featured an obstacle course that took about 2 minutes to run. The winner of the kids division got himself a Nintendo DSi, so he was pretty happy.
Light snow on and off yesterday - again not the kind of snowfall that is going to make much difference to the snow depths. Again places higher up saw more though with Naeba once again reporting a new 10cm of snow (and once again the official snow depth not changing).
It's a silver sky this morning. The sun has been out from time to time but generally cloudy looking day. It's about 4 degrees at the moment but with a chilly breeze it feels a bit colder than that today.
Nighta tonight is at the following resorts in Yuzawa: Naeba Iwappara
In Minamiuonuma just to the north, nighta at: Ishiuchi Maruyama Centleisure Maiko Joetsu Kokusai
A bit more snow topping things off yesterday though this morning started with fine weather and the sun making some appearances. It has clouded over though as we approach evening. We may be lucky enough to see some snow fall tomorrow, we shall see....
The following resort plans to be open for nighta tonight: Ichinose Family
Official resort snow depths as of 9th February 09:
A bit more snow since yesterday once again and today started off generally fine. It has clouded over somewhat during the day and right now it is around 2 degrees and cloudy with a slight wind... but not enough to cause any problems with operations today as the resorts are open as normal. There was some really good conditions up there at Kagura for people who were up early as it was untouched yesterday due to that area being closed. Nice.
