Niseko Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 8:51am
Weather conditions: High cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday there was only a dusting of new snow then overnight it cleared and the temperature plummeted. Today high cloud has moved in but it is well above the height of the summits and visibility is very good including views of Mt Yotei. Some snow is expected to come in later today and continue through tomorrow.

Today most of the mountain will accessable with all lifts in Hanazono as well as the Hirafu Gondola opening. This means vast areas of new terrain has opened for the first time this season. Just imagine all those freshies to be had and I have to work all day.....oh well. Also night skiing commences tonight. HIgashiyama and Annupurri ski areas will also have most lifts operating.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 8:54am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The temperature in town got down to around -17 last night and is still around -12 this morning. Unfortunately there has been very little precipitation and looking at the satelite images there is not much heading our way for the next few days.
We had another 2-3cm over the last 24hours, not enough to make a diference to the overall depth.
The resort has decided to open the Kitanomine area early this year, due to the early dumps of snow, it is set to open tomorrow morning. There should be some great powder stashes around tomorrow!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 9:10am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cloudy start to the day again with the tops of the mountains covered in cloud - and the Prince website reporting some snow falling up there. Can't confirm that from here. Down at village level, it's not snowing and the rain and mild weather of the last few days means that green is now showing through on the bottom slopes of Naeba once more as the snow has melted.

As reported last night Kagura were planning on opening the Tashiro ropeway and part of the Tashiro resort area this morning.

Some reports from the slopes today. The consensus is that Kagura is definitely the place to head for with decent snow conditons in the morning. Still not a huge amount of snow around but decent early season conditions and a lot of fun to be had. The sun even came out for a time before some snow started to fall later on in the day.

We've added some photos from Kagura below.

Hopefully some new snow falling up there tonight...   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 10:04am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another cloudy start to the day with a lot of mist around as well so difficult to see what is going on higher up on the mountains. Looking at the Yuzawa Kogen webcam though it doesn't look like there is any snow falling up there right now. Even sunny at times. There is no rain falling at the moment but there is a chance of some later on this afternoon.

So what are the choices?

A few runs at Naeba, a fairly large sections of Kagura and Mitsumata (as well as Tashiro today and tomorrow) and also the Central Area of Gala Yuzawa.

So when can we expect the snow to start it's through-winter run? Unfortunately it's looking likely that it may well be another week or so before the next big cold front arrives in the area. There might be a chance tomorrow, but the weekly forecasts have temperatures rising to double figures on Monday and Tuesday. We will, of course, keep you posted.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 10:50am
Weather conditions: Overcast low cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Low clouds and low crowds here today, with the gondolas and lifts open there's plenty of snow to go around. Snow depths are still at early levels but up the top there's enough to dig into and hours wild abandon to be had. No new snowfall over night, so the figures from yesterday haven't really changed much, lets hope for some new dumps today or tonight.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 10:58am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
More of Shiga Kogen is opening up this morning, with Sun Valley, Nishidateyama and Ichinose Diamond opening up lifts for the first time this season.

There was a bit of snow overnight but it didn't amount to much on the ground and currently it is cloudy. It's also fairly mild still with temperatures around 0 and actually 1 outside where I am now.

So conditions are still as they have been as we wait for the first big snowfall of the season to arrive and for resorts to open up more. It's good for a first ski or snowboard of the season but don't expect too much if you are coming.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 12:46pm
Weather conditions: Overcast with light rain at village level, wet snow in the mountains.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The precipitation has arrived! Its raining at the village level with low Cumulo-Stratus clouds covering the valley. Above 1200m sleet has been falling most of the morning but it is finally turning to snow, albeit fairly wet. The snow is expected to continue to tomorrow morning which should accumulate to about 20 - 30cm.

The temparatures are quite low today, around 4 deg C at the village level and 0 deg C above 1200m.

For those people who are in Japan over the Xmas and New Year and wish to head to the mountains of Minakami, make sure you book your accommodation ASAP, as the local lodges, hotels and pensions are starting to fill up.

My prediction is that the first decent snow in Minakami will be just before the weekend of Dec 23rd. Plenty of time to sort out all of you Winter gear, wax you board, and get some avalanche beacon training in.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Saturday 9th December 2006, 12:56pm
Weather conditions: cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light rain yesterday has turned in to wet snow and sleet in the valley and snow up on the resorts. Temperatures are still on the warm side for great powder but the heavier snow is sure to create a solid base for the snow that is sure to fall this week. Winds are calm and visibility poor with the cloud level hanging around 1500 metres.

Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Tsugaike and Happo are all open today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and will open when snow conditions allow.

Watch for cornices and loaded lee slopes that were created last week getting heavy with added snow fall and warmer weather. The warmer weather should, however, help to solidify the pack in the alpine and create a good bond with the ground cover.   Read more ...
