Yuzawa Now!

Monday 9th April 2007, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Rain > cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a wet and rainy morning in Yuzawa with temperatures around +6 degrees at 8:30am, though the forecast currently is just cloud for the day apart from rain for a short time this afternoon so it may well clear up. After today we seem to have a number of days of cloud or sun lined up.

From today, the resorts remaining open are Gala Yuzawa, Naeba and Kagura.

Nighta has now finished at the Naeba resort, and during the daytime at Naeba the following lifts are now ope - Dragondola, Prince Number 1 Gondola, Quad lifts number 3 and 5.

------------------

Today, we have a first hand report from the Kagura resort. Tsondaboy went up there to get some snow depth measurements and he gave us the following information.

"The snow depths I measured were exactly next to the slopes were the groomer hasn’t passed as it's impossible to stick the probe in a groomed area. The official snow depth at the resort was 280cm on this day. As you can see (in the photos in the YuzawaNow gallery, below) the numbers we found were less than that and you can expect the snow depth on the groomers to be 50-80 cm less than in the undisturbed areas.

Tashiro is hurting. Patches of dirt are coming out at the lower parts near the lake. It seems that they are moving snow from the trees and grooming it onto the slopes.... I don't believe that they will be able to keep Tashiro runing for more than 2-3 more weeks.

I didn't take any measurements in the Mitsumata area, but it looked more or less like Tashiro - maybe just slightly better.

The Kagura slopes are still ok and should not have problems operating until the end of next month.

The temperature was about 8 deg. There was a slight dusting of snow falling at the top of the number 1 high speed lift at around 14:00.

Of course the snow conditions were as expected - bulletproof at north facing slopes and slush on most of the other areas. Still there was enough snow to make for a good spring riding. If you do go up there though make sure to wax your board or skis - sticky sticky!"

Thanks to tsondaboy for the report.   Read more ...

High cloud cover today with expected light rain fall later this afternoon. Minimum temp overnight was 0 and the maximum temp today expected to reach 3degrees. The forecast is for more rain during the week. Not a bad day today for spring skiing with the best skiing to be found on the higher parts of the mountain.

Naeba Now!

Monday 9th April 2007, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There has been rain in parts of Yuzawa overnight but at the moment it is just cloudy and rather foggy as well - visibility is low and the top of Naeba is covered in cloud. Due to the low visibility conditions, the top number 5 pair lift at Kagura is closed today.

Lift operations at Naeba have been scaled back a bit from today, with the following lifts currently moving - Dragondola, Prince Number 1 Gondola, Quads Numbers 3 and 5.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 9th April 2007, 10:23am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A light dusting of snow again last night on the mountain in Nozawa will keep things fresh. The temperature at Yamabiko at the moment is 0C and the base depth remains unchanged at 150cm at the top. The snow will be slightly sticky again today but in general pretty good conditions with good visibility, few other skiers and plenty of snow. Wind remains low. As for the last few weeks only the top of the resort is open.

The outlook is for light snow most of today. Tuesday should be mostly clear again with light snow also set for Wednesday.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Monday 9th April 2007, 10:24am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Things are a little colder today, with cloudy conditions early on and poor visibility due to fog in places.

More resort areas of Shiga Kogen are closed from today, with some of those probably trying to open once more either at the weekends or in Golden Week - it is all going to depend on how long the snow can last.

The Yakebitaiyama resort area is closed from today until Friday, but will be back open on Saturday and Sunday with the Number 2 Gondola and Number 2 quad lifts operating on that day.

The resort areas that currently at least part open are:

Hakuba Now!

Monday 9th April 2007, 13:11pm
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What a weekend it was! We had the full spectrum of weather in the Hakuba mountains; Sun, Snow, Sleet, Wind, Rain but mostly blue skies and and warm days. There was a great turn out on Happo One for the JAL Mogul event and the EOC Tri-Modal Challenge and fun times had by all.

Today Hakuba is back to the slow warm spring feel with still great skiing and riding up on Goryu, Hakuba 47, Happo One and Tsugaike not to mention great touring up in the Alpine. All other ski areas in the area are closed for the 2006 / 07 winter season but the above 4 will run until May 6th. So there is still one more month of great spring corn snow to slide on and still some fresh to find at higher elevations.

Have a great spring of riding whether it be on snow or on the opening trails at valley bottom on mt. bikes. River running season is just around the corner in Hakuba and all those great spring slopes will be melting more and more each day and filling the rivers with the run off. So you can also jump in a boat or just a wet suit and get into some swift moving water.

Avalanche Hazard:

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

Backcountry Travel Advisory:
There has been about 20 cm of new snow accumulate in the alpine over the past week and multiple large slides were observed on solar radiated slopes. Most of the the large avalanche tracks ran after the main storm last thursday but have since been settling. Continue to be cautious as temperatures rise and on days that warm faster than usual.
People heading out in the backcountry should be wary of solar radiation on south facing aspects. Wind loaded slopes and cornices will also be areas to avoid as the day warms up. As mentioned earlier, shallow snowpack over bushes, rock outcroppings and bamboo (sasa) will be more likely to slide. Also take care in convex areas as there may be glide cracks formed and big holes in the snow.   Read more ...
