Furano Ski Area is now closed for the season.
It has been a long season from November through to May which has delivered some great skiing, especially for the lucky ones who get to spend the whole season here. Feburary would usually be the absolute best month for snow but this year January turned out to be a pearler with amazing snow conditions throughout the month.
While Furano is famous for it's blue sky days, these don't occur every day of the season. However Furano has the ability to deliver the snow but offer excellent visibility at the same time and this season I can't recall skiing in anything approaching whiteout conditions.
The one thing that does stand out in this resort is that while the weather maybe good in terms of visibility, it is extremely cold (which is what keeps the powder in such great condition). If I had one piece of advice for anyone coming here it would be to shout yourself a new high quality pair of gloves to ward of the cold finger experience.
As much as I love the winter and skiing, after months of snow I am happy to welcome the spring and onset of cherry blossoms which have just arrived in Furano.
Good morning from a fine and sunny Hakuba. It's a comfortable and warm 20 degrees or so as we approach noon.
From yesterday of course we are down to just the Gondola and Alps Number 1 pair lift open at Hakuba Goryu - they have just the top Panorama course open now and of course you need to get the Gondola back down. If you are interested in that final slide up there, it's 2400 yen for an adult and 1250 yen for (elementary school age) children. Open until 4pm on Sunday is the plan.
The latest forecasts shows the chance of rain falling tomorrow and cooler conditions, but we should be back to sunny skies for the weekend.
I'll post a season wrap-up early in the week to finish things off. In the meantime have a fun weekend.
