Early morning report... cloudy for now but it doesn't seem we are going to be able to escape rain I'm sorry to have to report. But hopefully by the time I post my next report, there's be some mention of snow falling. Fingers crossed everyone.

Official snow depths numbers reported by different areas of Shiga Kogen:

Please note that these numbers are the official numbers that ski resorts publish and we check and update them each morning.

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 7:19am
Weather conditions: Cloudy - for now!
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --

Noisy strong winds and rain. It's not very friendly out there. Rain might ease off until later on again but the wind seems set to stay.

The current weather conditions are affecting various lift operations across different ski resorts now.

If you are still wanting to be skiing or boarding this afternoon, best to check with the resort you plan to go to...

Morning from Yuzawa.

Not the best of things to report this morning.

While it is just cloudy right now, rain is expected by afternoon. And perhaps some heavy rain - and warmth - overnight. It's not often you get to see the temperature much higher through the night (about 14C!) than during the days on either side, but that is what is on the cards through tomorrow. Still hoping for the chance of rain turning into snow later tomorrow.

Stronger winds expected as well and it looks like the GALA Yuzawa resort is closed for the day today due to those forecast wind conditions.

The Tashiro Area of Kagura is also closed... that resort will be open from the Mitsumata Area through to the Kagura Number 1 Romance lift.

I can't see any other such news at the time of writing (7:15am) but would like to get the report up early to get that important info out there.

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 7:35am
Weather conditions: Grey clouds
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Nozawa.

Today it is starting off chilly but seems to be destined to warm up through the day and into the night. It is cloudy at the start of the day - rather dark and moody looking clouds - and we might get some wet snow before rain starts falling; and back to snow tomorrow as/if it gets colder again. We can expect some stronger winds too, though it's just light at the moment.

As far as the weeks forecast looks, it's looking more spring than wonderful March surprise. Maybe the week after that, he hopes!

I wish I had something more snowy and exciting to report... I'd say the best mind-set now is 'expect spring and any more fresh snow will be a bonus' kind of outlook.

Morning and an early report from Hakuba as I need to get myself to Tokyo today.

A generally fine day yesterday with some cloud hanging around but a lot of blue sky and sunshine.

It is a cloudy and kind of gloomy feeling start to the day. But we are expecting rain/snow later this morning, rain tonight and overnight and hopefully that turning into snow tomorrow. Elevation is going to be a factor. I'd recommend some early sliding today if you are planning on heading out.

Geto Kogen Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 8:26am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
The calm before the storm, yesterday. Tops of -1C with mainly cloudy skies and a snow shower here and there.

Today, tops of a balmy 11C with light rain in the afternoon, turning to heavy in the evening with a lot to fall by tomorrow morning. Winds are light, though this evening they should pick up to about 75km/h, but calm by the morning.

Looking at the forecast for the next week, it’s hard to predict anymore snowfall. We seem to be getting some lower temperatures, though no precipitation in sight (after this nightmare of a day we’re in for)...

Friday: heavy rain with some light snow, light winds & tops of 9C
Saturday: mostly sunny, light winds & tops of -1C
Sunday: mostly sunny with some late snow showers, moderate winds & tops of 3C

Niseko Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 8:28am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, foggy higher apparently
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
Hello and good morning from here near Hirafu base.

There is no fresh snowfall to report this morning and it is an overcast kind of start to proceedings here. There was a bit of snow falling during the day yesterday higher up but I doubt it delivered much.

I was just reading the other reports on SnowJapan that are up for this morning already and seeing how tonight should get warmer and bring with it some potentially heavy rain and strong winds. Unfortunately, it looks like we might be on for some of that as well... ending up with some snow tomorrow morning? I wouldn't get my hopes up too high on that score though. Don't expect much.

There's not that much snow potential on the forecast into next week either, I'm afraid.

Oh well. It's not like we can do anything about it. Other than stay positive and enjoy what we have.

And let's all have a little chuckle at that comically big mountain of snow blocking the view of Mt Yotei on the webcam image below.

Niseko Avalanche Report:

Niseko base 6am: -4℃, no snowfall. Moiwa800m: -6.5℃, E5.6m/s, no snowfall. Annupuri 1150m: -8℃, light breeze, no snowfall. 450cm snowpack at 1000m elevation. Hirafu peak: -8℃, moderate easterly wind, no snowfall. Benkei cape: SSW6m/s, Kamui cape: ENE4m/s, 1031hPa, 0.9m waves.

An easterly wind is picking up above 1200m elevation. The temperature is low this morning, but forecasted to rise above freezing level before noon. The general avalanche risk is low. Both wind and temperature is expected to rise as the next low-pressure approaches. Peak gates opening are undetermined, please follow the patrol’s decisions.

For minimizing the hazards, avoid the valley bottoms and do not stay still near the bottom of a slope after riding. The avalanche hazard will rise during the weekend. Watch the weather transition. The snow is not as good as yesterday. Beware of hitting trees or falling into cracks. The morning groomers conditions is very good. One more time, better not ski the valley bottoms and better not over-estimate beacons and airbags.

The mountain is slowly shifting to Spring. Have a nice day.

Furano Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 8:34am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: --
It is an overcast day with high cloud and a light to moderate wind whipping around the village. There is no new snow to report and due to the warm weather earlier in the week the slopes are icy and a good dump of snow is needed to cover up that frosty layer. Unfortunately it looks like the weather is going to get warm from tonight and at the moment 63mmm of rain is predicted from tonight through to Friday. The high tomorrow is forecast to be +12c. Lets hope that warm front somehow avoids us.   Read more ...

Madarao Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 8:34am
Weather conditions: Grey clouds
New snowfall: 0cm

Morning from Madarao.

Grey clouds looming over the mountain this morning. What are they going to bring us? If we believe the forecasts, it will be rain this afternoon and overnight turning into snow tomorrow as things get colder. Tomorrow and Saturday should be colder but warmth is due back from Sunday so it looks like spring is going to continue to win the 'seasons changing' battle - for the moment anyway.

I'd recommend early tracks this morning before the clouds start delivering...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 8th March 2018, 8:37am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: 4cm
Snow depth: --
Good morning from Naeba.

It's an overcast start today, with some light snow falling. There is a moderate wind gusting through, but due to the warm air temperature it doesn't feel particularly chilly. We are definitely beginning to press on into Spring! The pistes are grainy at the moment, due to the warm weather that we have had recently. The wind will continue to build throughout the day, with gusts of up to 40kmph at the base this evening. The air temperature is expected to continue to rise to highs of 9°C overnight tonight, and precipitation will increase in intensity throughout today, culminating in heavy rain overnight tonight.

Looking forwards, the wind will drop first thing tomorrow, alongside the air temperature, allowing the rain to change to snow. Accumulations are predicted to be modest, with around 7cm at the base. Temperatures will remain below 0°C throughout Saturday, and there will continue to be light snowfall. On Sunday, we can expect the sun to be back, and air temperatures will rise to be comfortably above 0°C through until at least Tuesday. We can expect a mix of sun and cloud throughout this period, and there will be little wind.   Read more ...

Good morning from Grandeco.

The skies looks very heavy with all the clouds covering the region this morning. You can't see Mt. Bandai from the ski slopes today because of these clouds.

The huge temperature difference between course peak and base this morning means it should be good to head up high this morning.

Unfortunately, those clouds look set to bring us rain later and tonight but fingers crossed by tomorrow there might be some fresh snow to talk about.

Good morning from Zao.

Strong winds playing around with a few lifts this morning - currently the Zao Ropeway summit section and the Zao Paradise Number 3 pair lift are on standby at the moment.

We're expecting heavy rain overnight too along with warmer conditions.

Not the best of days to be honest. We might be lucky and get a little snow sometime tomorrow, though I wouldn't expect much.

Clearer and more settled weather is likely from the weekend.

The freezing level is heading to over 3000 meters today, but is also going to fall fast. Nice to see that the rain predicted for tomorrow may well be snow instead. Not so happy to see the snowpack figures starting to come down (even at Seki Onsen). That wind will really eat the snow up.
