Minakami Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 7:12am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies (Tenjin - covered in cloud)
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snow eventuated in Minakami yesterday except for at Tenjindaiara that is still covered in snow clouds while the remainder of Minakami is beatiful blue skies. The blue skies should give way to snow around lunch time and it should snow through to late Friday, setting up the upper ski areas for a good weekend. The winds have dissapeared so any fresh snow should still be around on Saturday. Let's hope the temperatures stay low enough over the weekend!   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 7:37am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is a bit more new snow to report this morning and everywhere is looking like it has got another sprinkling overnight. There was a few cm of fresh snow on the car in Shiozawa this morning. (I have also heard reports of a fair bit of snow falling even further to the north in the Sumon and Irihirose region yesterday - some 40 minutes or so from Yuzawa by car).

Of course it's great to get new snowfall, everyone just wishes we could have a trademark "yukiguni" 50cm dump for once!

It was fairly cold overnight and the temperature at the moment is -1 and it is cloudy but quite bright. The forecast for the day is cloud and snow at times and it looks like tomorrow will be a little warmer and just be cloudy. Up at Naeba the sun is already making the hotel case a shadow onto the slopes.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 7:44am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Fresh snow it is! The snow started falling yesterday afternoon and we probably have about 10cm+ or so of new snow on the roadsides this morning with cold conditions. At the moment the snow isn't falling and there are some breaks in the cloud... but it looks like we might be on for some more snow later on in the day. With a fresh topup conditions out on the slopes should be pretty decent. It would be good to get some more snow before the weekend.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 8:18am
Weather conditions: Overcast, sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning is overcast with sunny spells. At 8am it is -6 at the base of the mountain. We have only had a dusting of snow in the last 24 hours. Yesterday got fairly warm again and the snow is getting more compacted and icy by the day. We need some decent snow falls and colder days to improve things but at the moment the forecast is only giving snow showers over the next week, no real dumps. On the upside the clear weather is giving us fantastic views and the mountain is still empty so the runs are never getting tracked out.

There is no wind around this morning so all lifts should be open as usual.

Niseko Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 8:42am
Weather conditions: Snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the gates were closed and the upper lifts weren't running. Conditions on the hill were variable. In the deeper wind blown aspects the riding was good, but in the shallower areas you were bottoming out onto the harder icy snow pack underneath. With another 10+cms overnight conditions will be even better today. The gates won't open first thing but are expected to open at some stage today.

It is still snowing and should continue through the day. Visibility will be poor and the wind will stay moderate-strong up high. Later in the day it is expected to ease.

More snow is forecast overnight but it should ease during Friday. Longer range it looks like more snow is coming Sat/Sun.    Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 9:17am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A partly cloudy start to the day in Nozawa. Fresh snow fell yesterday and overnight and there is at least 5cm of fresh powder from the top down to Uenotaira. Base depths are 165cm at Yamabiko and 100cm at Uenotaira. Nagasaka and Hikage still have only 15cm of patchy coverage. Karasawa remains closed. Temperatures today on the mountain are -8C at Yamabiko and -10C at Uenotaira. The village is sitting at -2C. Visibility at the moment is good and the wind is around 15km/h.

The outlook is for light snow to continue today and tomorrow. Saturday morning and afternoon will be mostly fine but on Saturday night heavy snow will fall.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 9:41am
Weather conditions: Overcast to fog
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

This morning the snow was still falling, having accumulated almost 20 cm in the upper Hira Kawa valley. There may well be more at higher elevations. The forecast is for the precipitation to taper off today. The temperatures are forecast to remain relatively cool (-3 C to 1 C). Yesterday's forecast high temperature was 1 C and the actual high was observed to be -3 C. Winds are forecast to be light from the west in the valley bottom. The roads in Hakuba town-site are a bit slick with packed snow especially on the back streets. This new snow will definitely soften up the piste. But it will camouflage the former bald spots and other features especially on the lower elevation slopes. Be aware. Ski with care.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Overcast
Temperature: Present: -3.5 C
Maximum: -3.0 C
Minimum: -4.0 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Light from west (Hakuba incinerator chimney smoke)
Precipitation: Snowing at a rate of accumulation of less than 1 cm per hour (S -1)
Barometer and trend: 914 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 18 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 65 cm
Foot penetration: 18 cm
Surface: New snow crystals, rimed, 1.0 mm (riming usually indicates turbulent winds aloft)
Density of surface snow: 70 kg/cubic meter
Crust: 14 cm
Cloud ceiling: 1,450 m a.s.l.

Above tree line: Considerable

Tree line: Considerable

Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. At this point I have no information about the strength and direction of the higher elevation winds. The riming of the HN24 crystals indicates a certain amount of turbulence and high humidity aloft. High humidity is a factor in the formation of slabs in wind transported snow.

Travel Advisory:
The almost 20 cm of HN24 and the probability of more at higher elevation was the main factor in raising the hazard rating from "moderate" to "considerable". The bond between the new snow and the old surface (often a melt freeze crust), the presence or absence of "shears" in the new snow, and whether or not there has been wind transport and to what extent will affect the seriousness of the hazard. The ski-penetration should be manageable. With the firm crust just below this new snow an avalanche once started may travel a fair distance.

Naeba Now!

Thursday 8th March 2007, 12:31pm
Weather conditions: white sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Dead on zero today. A white sky with a shroud of cloud hooding Naeba. Not much to report on really, only about 5 cm since the last report, which seems to have disappeared already. Reports have come in last night of it snowing further up the valley though, over towards the Kagura area, so I guess we can expect a bit more fun up there. It has been cold though, and so we're still hoping for a little more snow.   Read more ...
