Hakuba Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 9:13am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is snowing pretty hard right now this morning in Hakuba! About 1 cm of new snow accumulation on the ground in places and we hope the snow keeps coming and stays. We can perhaps expect some semi-decent snowfall tonight up on the mountains.

The good news is that is looks like we have a long stretch of cold weather coming with some snow forecasted on Friday as well along with some very cold temperatures. As long as it stays cold we are happy and the hills that are making snow can make snow.

If you have spent a winter season in Hakuba before, you'll know that when the snow really comes it can fall in massive amounts in a short time. Resorts on standby as we wait for that heavy snow to roll in.

All resorts currently closed.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 9:27am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain/sleet
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Currently the resort is reporting 20-25cm of snow up on the top slopes, so not quite enough to get things open. Still no word on whether they will be able to open anything on Saturday - it will all depend on what goes down today and tonight. It's a cold morning with the temperature around 2 degrees in the village and the forecast is for sleet/snow today and snow overnight perhaps even down to the village and so there is certainly a chance.

We'll bring you what we hope will be good news tomorrow morning.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 9:51am
Weather conditions: sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Apparently the Inuit have nearly 50 words for snow, if there are any mooching around in Niseko this morning their vocabulary of nouns and superlatives would get a work out. A reported 20+cm fell overnight at Hirafu village level, although around 30cm was directly observed in Hanazono, all incredibly light - one could almost clear their car by blowing strongly.

Early morning still had some residual cloud cover and light snowfall but as of 9.30am that has given way to clear blue skies making for a fantastic morning slope side with light winds and temperatures around -7

Big news is Hanazono 3 is running a couple days earlier than planned!

Current lift operations at time of writing (subject to change depending on conditions)

Hirafu family pair, Ace Quad, Ace Pair 3 and Hooded pair 3 running

Gondola, jumbo pair and Pair 2 and Annupuri Pair 3 running.

Niseko Village:
Banzai and Community chair and Gondola running

Hanazono lift 3 running   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies.
New snowfall: 5cm
Snow depth: 90cm
Conditions are very nice today with clear blues skies and a nice dusting of 5cm of fresh powder. The cold temperatures are forecast to continue through to the end of the week and we should receive some light snow falls. While Kitanomine is not offically open yet the high speed quad chair is operating today for school groups. Groomers could be seen this morning working the upper slopes in preparation of opening. The offical opening of Kitanomine is planned for December 16, but this date may change depending on snow conditions and preparations.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 11:10am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's up and down with the snowline of late. The upper slopes of Naeba have more than a few cm now but the lower slopes bare this morning apart from the man-made snow run that is taking shape to be ready for opening on Saturday morning.

Light snow falling a bit before in the village but generally just cloudy conditions this morning.

Kagura is reporting 1-2cm of new snow overnight and it's looking cloudy with light snow falling and generally poor visibility up there.

The forecast is encouraging -- we can maybe expect a semi-decent fall of snow overnight and into tomorrow along with what will surely be the coldest temperatures of the season so far.... well into the double minuses on the mountain. There's not a whole lot of snowfall on the forecast beyond that into next week so hope to bring good news tomorrow morning.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 11:13am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is just cloudy here this morning in Yuzawa - light snow falling higher up and there have been a few spots of rain here earlier on but it is holding off for the moment.

Snow is forecast for tonight though, probably down to town level, and some very cold temperatures tomorrow and into Saturday. Varying estimations on how much snow to expect but it likely will not be a mega-dump to get things started.... might be good enough to help Kagura open up more and help Naeba with their opening on Saturday.

Anyway, we'll report tomorrow with the latest!

Evening update

Quick update this evening. Some wet snow falling in Yuzawa on and off this afternoon and snow is likely to fall in town overnight - officially 'up to 5cm' in town seems to be the forecast. Fingers crossed, will let you know how it turns out tomorrow morning.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 11:23am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Wintery conditions this morning in Shiga Kogen - snow is falling and visibility is very poor out there this morning! Just a cm or two so far all over, but hopefully it will continue to bring us the goods today and into tomorrow. There are no changes to the limited current lift/course operations, but hopefully I will be able to bring news of more imminent openings in tomorrows report. The forecast has some moderate snowfall due into tomorrow along with those even colder temperatures (-16 tomorrow night anyone?!).

Takamagahara Mammoth - 20cm
Ichinose Family - 20cm
Kumanoyu - 25cm
Yakebitaiyama - 30cm

Resorts part open [8th Dec 11]:

Madarao Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 12:23pm
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some spectacular views from Madarao Kogen yesterday - above the low-lying clouds down in the valleys of northern Nagano. Very nice.

Today things are a bit more winterlike and there's pretty much no views to be had. Cloud is covering the mountain, poor visibility, and a bit of snow falling as well. It's a cold morning and we do actually have snow forecast for the day and overnight into tomorrow as well and so it will be good to see what we have as a result of that come tomorrow morning.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 8th December 2011, 17:02pm
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Grey skies continue again today. The low cloud is back over Tanigawadake with sleety snow falling up top.

The big news of the day is that Tenjin have decided on a limited opening this weekend. They have looked at the forecast and reckon there will be enough snow on the ground to at least get some of the mountain open. So Saturday December 10th for the first turns of the season in the Minakami area.   Read more ...
