Yuzawa Now!

Friday 8th December 2006, 7:52am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain/sleet
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There are spots of rain falling at the moment in the town but the mountains are covered in cloud and it looks like it might be snow higher up.

Taking a look at the forecast - we have cloud for today and similar conditions for tomorrow. Hopefully higher up areas like Kagura will be in for some snow but it looks unlikely that there will be any large resort opening status changes for the weekend. It's also unfortunately looking unlikely that we will be getting the big dump of snow we need to really open up in the coming week as well with temperatures warmer than normal for the time of year. Forecasts can change quickly though, so lets just hope for that.

Gala are opening up the Central Area this morning, and are currently reporting 30cm of snow.

We will be bringing you a report tonight with the latest...   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain

Light rain early on this morning, though that may well be snow higher up at Kagura.... no reports in from up there yet. The forecast for the weekend is currently not that clear, so we'll update this page again later tonight...

It turned out to be a cloudy day today. Here's the latest from Naeba and Kagura.

Up at Kagura, the following courses are opening up: Panorama Course, Kagura Main Gelende, Giant Course, Gondola Course, Gondola line, Family course. Lifts moving are Kagura Number 4 Romance Lift, Kagura Number 1 Quad, Kagura Gondola, Mitsumata Number 3 Romance lift, Mitsumata Number 1 Quad and Mitsumata Ropeway. So they seem to be gradually opening up more courses.

Tomorrow Kagura also is promising to be operating the Tashiro Ropeway, Tashiro Number 1 Romance lift, Tashiro Number 2 Romance lift and Tashiro Number 1 Quad lift tomorrow and Sunday. Just the 2 days after which they plan to open up properly on the 16th.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow

Sorry for no report yesterday, network issues prevented us from posting one....

Anyway, yesterday was fairly mild but it's back to cold this morning. Visibility is low and a fresh sprinkling of snow (just a sprinkling!) so it's difficult to see much. Apparently it is set to clear up later in the day.

Resort opening status remains unchanged as we all stay waiting for the snow to come. Unfortunately it's looking unlikely that it will be over the next few days.   Read more ...

Yesterday was pretty warm again with very little snowfall.
This morning it is overcast and very still. It is around -4 in town and todays maximum is predicted to be -2 with a 50% chance of precipitation these predictions are set to last all week so hopefully we'll get some good fresh snow falls up on the mountain.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 8th December 2006, 9:35am
Weather conditions: partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light rain here in the town of Hakuba this morning and last night, a little bit of wet snow on the top of the ski hills but too warm for us ski/board enthusiasts. The snow was not bad yesterday afternoon though, still soft and workable. Weather should be clearing up with sunny skies this afternoon and temperatures remaining at around the 5 deg.C mark throughout the day with light winds out of the West. Looking at more snow in the forecast for tomorrow, but only a few cm's. Keep your boards waxed and stay tuned.

Tsugaike and Happo have opened up today with minimal lift operation. Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and plan to open this coming Saturday.

3 major fracture lines approximately 2 metres deep could be seen tow days ago on Shirouma Dake in at the top of Hakuba Sawa bowl, Hakuba Shakushi Dake North ridge and Goryu dake. All fractures are on the South Eastern aspect, recent lee slopes, that were heavily loaded over the last 3 days. Most probably came down with the first light this morning. Overnight there was a surface frost that formed with the clear cool weather that may cause problems on shaded aspects come the next snow fall and the warm solar radiation of today will no doubt cause a sun crust to form on southerly aspects that may also cause instability in the consecutive snow falls. Watch out around rocky outcrops during early season as there will be a lot of instability around these areas due to large temperature gradients and rapid warming on the sunny days.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 8th December 2006, 10:50am
Weather conditions: Overcast low cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
OK folks the chairs are (mostly) all into action today and the resort is now officially open. Until now all the snow level figures listed have been based on the lower fields, today we have figures from up top so you should notice a jump in the amount. Regrettably the mountain is currently shrouded in low thick clouds that will hopefully lift as the day gets older. These clouds may have some snow in them so they are welcome to drop it any time they like. The crowds are expected to be almost non existent today which means plenty of room to move on some untouched hillsides, not bad at all.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 8th December 2006, 14:45pm
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another overcast day in Minakami with the forecasted precipitation not eventuating. The temparatures remain reasonably high (10 deg C)during the day with no snow left at the village level but still a reasobale base (30cm - 50cm) in the mountains.

Temparatures above 1000m are still low enough to produce snow (3deg C and lower) so hopefully the forecast for precipitation for tomorrow is accurate.

The local ski areas are starting to show concern with the lack of snow and mild temparatures but next Thursday Friday are looking promising for snow. Fingers crossed!

Niseko Now!

Friday 8th December 2006, 14:58pm
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy with snow showers and a little sunshine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night it cooled off and we had a nice little dump of snow by morning. Had my first ski on the mountain this morning and it was awesome. Off piste it was thigh deep and very light and dry. There are very few people on the mountain and even though there is still limited terrain open there are plenty of freshies to be found.

Snow is expected to continue on and off through much of the forecast but it is expected to get pretty mild through mid week with the possibility of rain at lower levels on Wednesday. Still forecasting that far out is rarely accurate so here's hoping is changes around to snow again.    Read more ...
