Yuzawa Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 6:51am
Weather conditions: Cloud, bright
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday light snow was falling from time to time, but nothing that will have meant much of a difference to the snow depths. Later on in the day things were clear and it was generally fine weather.

Last night they were predicting a maximum of 5-10cm of snow, but this morning there is no new snowfall to report - at least at town level.

Right now there is a fair amount of cloud around but it is bright and while the forecast has us down for a chance of snow around lunchtime it looks like it should generally be a fine day with the temperature rising to around +2 degrees or maybe a little more in the early afternoon.

It looks like after today there will be a spell of fine sunny weather with higher temperatures over the weekend and through next week.   Read more ...

Snowing now and continuing until the afternoon. Enjoy it while you can, as next week looks to be sunny every single day. Saturday will be good sliding, but watch for slush the rest of the week.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 8:18am
Weather conditions: Cloud, fair
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There has been a sprinkling of fresh snow overnight in Shiga Kogen, but right now it is not snowing. It's a cloudy start to the day in parts, though the forecast indicates that things might clear up during the day. It does seem unlikely that we'll get any snow anyway. Temperatures are both up and down from what was reported yesterday, but it generally feels less cold this morning. There isn't much of a wind about, just a slight breeze.

Fine weather looks likely this weekend and beyond along with milder temperatures and smaller chances of snowfall.

Nighta at the following resort areas of Shiga Kogen tonight:

- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond

Furano Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 8:43am
Weather conditions: overcast, warming up throughout the day, firm packed snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Weather is staying pretty constant again today. Cloudy with temperatures above zero for most of the day. The groomers on the mountain do an excellent job and early runs are where it is at today. If you are looking for a challenge, try the Furano Challenge. This is developing into an unofficial speed challenge (not sanctioned by SJ). The aim is to unload the Ropeway at the top, do the run from the top to bottom and then get back on the ropeway before it departs. You have about 3.5 minutes to complete the task. It is best done first thing in the morning, when the mountain is quiet because at high speeds it is a dangerous activity.

Spring days are made for park and pipe riding. There have been a few features added in the Kitanomine area, and also the Furano Zone World Cup standard halfpipe is in excellent condition.

Hakuba Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 8:51am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Blue skies and a few high clouds yesterday turned to snowflakes last night and we woke up this morning to around 5 cms of powder in Echoland with snow still falling but at most around 1 cm/hour. Temperatures are fairly warm with -1 degree at the base and -3 degrees at 1500m measured at 8:30 this morning with no wind to speak of so its possible we'll get the fresh snow melting if the sun appears today. Blue skies forecast for tomorrow...

Backcountry advisory update:

The snowpack is generally stabilising but there will still be areas of instability. Warm temperatures in general so South facing solar aspects especially will warm quickly increasing the possibility of wet slides - exercise more caution as temperatures increase. A lot of that snow has come down especially at lower elevations but as always travel carefully.

Conditions are generally getting better but as well as the risk last Friday's snow sliding there could be old instabilities especially with warming even going down to the rain-crust of January 12th. It's a big snow-pack and its all got to come down at some point...

Avalanche Danger:

Below Tree Line: Moderate

Tree Line: Moderate

Alpine: Considerable   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 8:59am
Weather conditions: Clear blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the valley experienced a blue sky sunny day but some of the upper mountains remained in the clouds and Tenjin even got a little bit of snow.

Today the sun is out in force with an expected high of 8 deg C at the valley level. This will start to change snow to Spring conditions rapidly, especially with the next 5 days forecast for sun.

Backcountry Advisory
Multiple sluffs were witnessed yesterday in steeper backcountry terrain, as deep as 50cm in the pack. The warming temperatures are likely to aid in the bonding of the interface between the new and old snow creating more stable conditions (but heavier snow) on Southern faces. The snow on North facing slopes at higher altitude should remain lighter for the next 3 days at least.

Avalanche Hazard:
Alpine: Moderate
Tree Line: Moderate
Below Tree line: Low   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 9:07am
Weather conditions: Sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As U2 sings, "It's a beautiful day". 5 centimeters of fresh powder fell last night and the sun is out. It is cold and there is no wind. Skiing and boarding will be fantastic on the groomed and there might even be a bit of powder off piste but not enough to cover up the chopped up crud from earlier on in the week.

Once again, by most world resort standards it would be a perfect day but in Niseko, we are still hanging out for deep powder. The forcast for the next 5 days is much of the same. All lifts and gates are open.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Weather conditions: Currently snowing heavily
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Woke up to a fairly clear day today in the Village. Then just after breakfast we were blessed with some huge flakes dropping from the sky. Still falling heavily now and shoudld be some great fresh powder about especially up the top
Pretty quiet on the mountain so we are in for a magic day
The outlook is for more light snow over the next few days with sunny periods so should make for ideal conditions for the weekend

Naeba Now!

Friday 7th March 2008, 17:33pm
Weather conditions: changeable
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has generally been a fine day with almost no wind today, just some cloud around. It has also been fairly mild and it is looking likely that the weather over the weekend and into next week will be good with little forecast of snow on the weekly horizon right now. That can change quickly of course....

So it looks like it should be a fine weekend.   Read more ...
