Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 8:42am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Happily, the rain didn't last long last night and it had cleared up by around 9pm. This morning there is no sign of the snow that they were talking about last night, though it is colder than the last few days (around 2 degrees), grey and generally cloudy. There is a slight breeze at the moment but some stronger winds forecast for the early afternoon - not enough hopefully to affect lift operations though.

So looking ahead to the next snowfall. As the forecast stands at the moment tomorrow will be cloud/sun and more cloud for Friday with the next snow lined up for late on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It would be good if that could arrive before the weekend...   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Overcast, snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday cooled down after the warm start to the day. It was warm in the morning (above freezing), then cooled down and snow fell lightly through the afternoon and overnight. This morning there is 5+ cms of some nice snow here in the village. On the hill this will be more like 10+ cms.

Today snow showers will continue through the day. There is a only a light wind down low and light-moderate up high. It is much colder than yesterday, currently -11 on the mountain. All lifts should be operating today and all gates are expected to open.

Tomorrow will remain cold and some snow will fall on and off during the day.

Later update:

The snow condition up high is good. It is benefitting from these colder temps. If has been snowing all afternoon and has been quite heavy since about 3pm. The visibility has deteriorated from patches of blue and high cloud to strong winds and low cloud.

There has been another 5 or so cms in the village since this morning and 5-10cms on the mountian. The tracks were definatley starting to fill in so conditions for night riding will be good.

This snowfall is forecast to continue through the night but ease off by tomorrow morning. Its set to stay cold for the rest of the week so this new snow should stay in better condition.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 9:19am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is lightly falling in Minakami this morning with a layer of stratus clouds covering the sky. There is a light Northerly breeze that is keeping the chill in the air with a current temperature of 0 deg C at the village level.

The outlook for today is for mostly cloudy skies with some very light snow. The visibility should be good at most ski areas as the cloud cover is quite high.

Looking towards the weekend, there is precipatation forecast from Friday onwards that will hopefully take the form of snow.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 9:47am
Weather conditions: Misty.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A misty morning this morning in Nozawa but set to clear later today. No good news on the snow front with only the lightest of dustings last night and no significant snow expected for the rest of the week. As it has been of late, at the top at Yamabiko the snow is still good but on the lower runs more snow is definitely needed. Temperatures at present are between -3 and -4C on the mountain and between +1 and +2C in the village.
Visibility is fair at present but set to get alot better as the day clears.

The forecast is for a mix of clear, cloudy and light snowy weather over the next three days. Winds will be in a comfortable range of between 5 and 15km/h.

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 10:13am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cloudy start to the day, with ice absolutely everywhere. If ice isn't your ticket then maybe you might want to think about staying indoors. There's no wind at the moment, however I heard a gust in the early hours of the morning that literally shook the buildings. But it's so calm now that it's hard to imagine there being any lift stoppers today.

It's -2 in the village and there is the odd fluttering of large snow flake - but really, it's just the teasing variety, nothing to write home to uncle Jon about.

Yesterday's conditions on the way to Kagura via the Tashiro route where quite tricky. Caused by the high temperatures, the cat tracks where grooved with those wiggly edge catchers - the kind you get when you are leaving the ski lift on a warm day. The Mitsumata Board/SkiX park is also a lot of fun at the moment. Things are looking quite worrying though - there's a lot of greenery around.

I heard a whisper that there might be big snow coming in for the weekend. Is this true?   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 10:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Partially cloudy skies and light south easterly winds are the weather conditions in Hakuba today. Winds will change through the day to more of a 'Moderate Northerly'. The temperature is presently mild at +1 C and could rise slightly through the day to a max of +3 C in the valley. There is no real precipitation to speak of for the next couple of days, a few possible dribs and drabs that will probably not amount to much. A low pressure system, however, seems to be building up north and will most likely bring snow from Friday. So look forward to good powder riding come the week end.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -0.5 C
Maximum: 11.0 C
Minimum: -3.5 C
Wind at surface: Calm
Winds aloft: Light, possibly moderate from south-east
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 925 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 81 cm
Foot penetration: 20 cm
Surface: melt/freeze
Density of surface snow: not measure
Crust: 1 cm
Above tree line: Moderate

Tree line: Moderate

Below tree line: Low

N.B. hazard will increase with day time warming. The forecast high in the valley is 3 C.

Travel Advisory:
The past couple of days of warm temperatures have done much to settle the snow pack. Today's high temperature is forecast to be 3C. Be aware of what the temperature really is and not just the "apparent" temperature. Use a thermometer not your skin and subjective judgement. The buried surface hoar referred to a few days ago has not gone away. Remember it was not the first person on the slope that triggered the Hiyodori Mine avalanche of 2007-02-04. There is a reason there are no trees on/in certain features (e.g. gullies). If in doubt stay on the ridges and not in the gullies.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 10:26am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the warmth of the last two days, a bit of a change today with temperatures down once more and cloudy grey skies. No new snow to report though unfortunately but the colder temperatures are certainly welcome in keeping the snow conditions decent. While it is cloudy there are signs that the sun might also make another appearance.

So when is the next snowfall due? It looks like we might have to wait until Friday or into the weekend to see that arrive. We'll let you know as soon as it is in sight!   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Wednesday 7th February 2007, 14:13pm
Weather conditions: Overcast with snow showers.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday stayed fairly warm untill late afternoon but we didn't receive the precipitation that was forecast so the snow has been too badly affected, just a bit compacted after the warm weather. There was no snow overnight but we have had a couple of centimetres fall this morning. The temperatures are slowly getting colder; -7 at 8am this morning at mountain base.

The forecast is giving snow showers over the next 7days with the daytime temps getting down to -10 again soon.

I drove through Sapporo yesterday and it was pouring with rain - not a good start to the ice festival! Today it is snowing heavily there though so hopefully the sculptures are OK. Tonight there is a Geisha from Kyoto doing a performance here in Furano with free tickets available from the tourist information office below Kitanomine gondola station.   Read more ...
