Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 6th February 2009, 8:02am
Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is snowing this morning in Nozawa. Around 10cm has fallen since last night in the village and on Uenodaira where there is now 160cm of base. 20cm is reported for Yamabiko taking the snow depth up to 205cm up there. It is currently -1 degree in the village and -6 degrees up the top, where there is a Northwesterly wind of 25 km/h.

Yesterday's warm, sunny conditions saw the snow softening considerably. Temperatures were well above zero in the village and for the lower slopes too. Up higher the snow was not so affected by the sun, so it should be in good condition with today's new snow on top.

Light snow and snow showers are expected to continue throughout the day, with winds weakening before an expected clear morning tomorrow. More snow is forecast for Saturday night and Sunday, although warmer temperatures on Saturday may see a mixture of snow and rain for the village and the lower slopes on Saturday night.

All lifts are expected to operate today except:
Mizunashi.
Yunomine
Hikage #2 B
Challenge
Utopia

All courses will be open except Mukoubayashi, Kurokura and Hachiman.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Snow, cloud

After another of those mild days yesterday, things are more wintery this morning. Some new snow overnight - 10cm or so I'd say - and it is continuing to snow at the moment. It might not continue for long though with the clouds set to clear up later on and fine weather forecast for tomorrow morning. We should be back with the snow though on Saturday night with snow showers forecast for Sunday... not snow storm type snowfall so conditions should be just fine out there.

Lets hope it keeps snowing today to give us a decent new cover.

Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --

So how did that snow do overnight?

Well, we have got just a few cm at town level. It's hovering around 0 degrees at the moment and fairly wet snow.

Iwappara is reporting 5cm of new snow mid-resort, while Kagura is reporting about 20cm of new snow and Naeba about 10cm. So high up things are looking fairly decent.

If the snow continues hopefully those numbers will go up all round - the resorts lower down in Yuzawa are especially in real need of that fresh snow, so lets all hope it coming....

Forecast is for snow for the day though it doesn't look like it will last much beyond this evening with fine weather forecast for tomorrow with a return to mild temperatures.

We'll update this page tonight with the latest.....

Naeba Now!

Friday 6th February 2009, 9:25am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
New snow to report this morning. 10cm of so in Naeba and this morning Kagura is reporting about 20cm of new snow. There are some fairly gusty winds high up though at the time of writing that is not affecting operations at Kagura, though the Dragondola is closed at the moment due to those winds. So no connection between Naeba and Tashiro at the moment - it will open up if conditions improve.

It is still snowing this morning, but not heavily.

Fine weather forecast for tomorrow morning, but more snow is due to move in tomorrow night and snow for Sunday.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 6th February 2009, 9:30am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good news - there has been some very welcome snow overnight with about 10cm or so lower down and probably 15cm or so higher up at Tenjindaira and currently falling at about 3cm/hr.

We still have relatively mild temperatures though and it is still looking likely that tomorrow the weather will be fine but with a chance of more snow on Sunday.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Weather conditions: Clear, blue, and sunny.

2 cm of new stuff. We'll call it dust.

But it is CLEAR, BLUE, and SUNNY today. Beautiful day to be out on the slopes. Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it, but you should go for me.

Temps will remain nice and cool today, which will keep the snow in good condition.

This Saturday and Sunday is the Furano Snow Festival. There will be games, activities, food throughout the day, and fireworks (Saturday night) in the Kitanomine parking lot.

Stop by for some winter fun.

Think Snow. Think Powder. Think cold temps.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 6th February 2009, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Cloud / Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just when I thought my addiction to the white powder was finally shaken after losing the clammy hands and cold sweats...just when the vomiting and violent mood swings had come to an end...the clouds came in and brought snow overnight. Not the lightest fluffiest kind, a little wet and heavy and exactly what we needed.

The Goryu gondola line was back to how it should be with people jostling for position and charging to be the first to gobble some of the good stuff and it didn't take long for the snow on the runs to get smashed.

Goryu were calling 15-20 cms of fresh but there were deep spots of maybe 40-50cm to be found. Some strong winds (17m/s) from the North-West that aren't affecting us over at Goryu at all but may swing some more snow South-side. Atmosphere temperatures at Happo-Ike are -10.2 degrees but were measured at 6:00 AM in Goryu to be -4 so we can assume the wind-chill factor is in effect up there.

Snow in the valley has petered out now but seems to still be falling a bit on top. All we need now is more of the same! Tomorrow is forecast to be bluebird and Sunday...rain is forecast but that was the call for last night in the beginning so lets hope for an upgrade soon.

Official resort snow depths on 6th Feb 09:
Happo-one:
50cm (Shirakaba)
60cm (Sakka/Kitaone)
210cm (Kurobishi/Usagidaira)

95cm (Toomi)

Niseko Now!

Friday 6th February 2009, 18:24pm
Weather conditions: Snow showers
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Sorry about the late report but I had to head into Sapporo early this morning. When I left Niseko it was only partly cloudy but as we neared Nakayamatoge it started snowing heavily and in Sapporo it was dumping. As often happens when it dumps in Sapporo we've ended up having very little snow in Niseko today. This is because when the wind is in the right direction to snow in Sapporo the coastal mountains from Kamui peninsula back through into Sapporo cause a bit of a 'rain shadow' effect over our region. So Sapporo ended up with around 25cm today and Niseko had only a few snow showers with plenty of sunny breaks.
Tomorrow though another low pressure system looks set to move across the region and fairly significant snowfalls are predicted starting from later tomorrow.

Current Official Snow Depths:

Grand Hirafu:
Top - 290cm
Bottom - 125cm

Niseko Village:
Top - 320cm
Bottom - 170cm

Annupuri:
Top - 340cm
Bottom - 190cm
