Shiga Kogen Now!
Tuesday 6th December 2016, 8:20am
It is snowing!
Snow is falling here in Shiga Kogen this morning.
1cm of snow on the cars outside as of now, but it's coming down quite nicely now and so if this continues I'm confident I'll be able to write a good report tomorrow... the forecast for the day is strong winds and at times heavy snow.
I'll bring you the news in the morning!
Areas of Shiga Kogen currently open:
Ichinose Family The Number 2 pair A lift is operating with the lower main course area open.
Kumanoyu The Number 2 pair lift is operating with a 600m long run open.
It is colder this morning and importantly there's 6cm of fresh snow outside my place here near Hirafu base. The temperature is currently slightly above 0C but we are actually expecting it to get colder as the day goes on.
Strong winds may well affect lifts throughout the day, and I have posted the latest on that situation below.
The forecast is looking very nice at the moment too, so here's to lots of fresh snowfall in the coming week. On and off by the looks of it rather than a full-on non-stop extravaganza but we'll see... bring it on, I say!
Frequently asked question answered:
"Why don't you post the reports earlier?"
I probably usually spend about 30 minutes or so on this report every day. Sometimes it is a bit less than that and sometimes it is much more – it depends on what is happening at the time and what there is to report. The first lifts at the ski resorts in Niseko start moving at 8:30am and it is around that time when it becomes clear if there might be any interruptions or changes to plans. Early morning weather often changes quickly too – from the time I get up to when I am about the post my report. As such I usually try and get my report posted at around that time.
It sounds like some people would like earlier reports but if I posted them earlier I wouldn’t have that up-to-date information at the time when the resorts open. And, I’d have to get up earlier. As dedicated as I am to these reports, I also need my beauty sleep and there’s a few things I need to do before settling down to report duties.
If you are in Niseko and need to know what the weather is doing before my report time… I suggest looking outside the window! Joking aside, I see each of these reports as one piece of an ongoing commentary of the season, rather than something that is aimed exclusively at people who are in Niseko and checking the weather before rushing off for first lifts.
A thank you to the kind people who sent me a message regarding the comments I made in my report yesterday. I wasn’t angling for comments, honest! Always appreciated, thank you. I will gambarimasu as much as possible and be particularly excited, when appropriate of course.

Rain - sleet - snow
Quick report this morning and hopefully I will have more to report tomorrow.
It's still relatively mild but snow is falling on the mountain this morning and it's due to continue getting colder through the day today. We had some impressive sounding thunder earlier on as well. The snow is falling close to village level and definitely of the wet variety but again we are hoping for something down to base proper later.
The forecast is still showing some good promise too in the coming week.
Are we finally going to click into winter mode proper? Lets see what I can report tomorrow!
Here are the planned season opening dates for the ski and snowboard resorts in the Hakuba region. There are all subject to change depending on what happens weather-wise:
Hakuba Happo-one: as soon as there is enough snow Hakuba 47: as soon as there is enough snow Hakuba Goryu: as soon as there is enough snow Tsugaike Kogen: as soon as there is enough snow Hakuba Cortina: from 10th December Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field: from 16th December Hakuba Norikura Onsen: from mid December Hakuba Sanosaka: from mid December

Rain in town, snow higher
Heavy rain, strong winds and some thunder added into the mix early this morning, with snow falling higher up... and it's forecast to be snowing here at town level later on today as the temperatures drop.
I'm hoping to be able to report something on the ground in my report tomorrow!
Yesterday I said that today might start a bit wet.
Well, yes, it's a lot wet!
Lots of rain this morning, but I'm looking forward to it getting colder this afternoon and snow falling here in the village.
I am hoping to be able to bring you news of snow tomorrow morning.
Nozawa Onsen will open as soon as there is enough snow. Read more ...

Cloud and snow, fog
No snow to report yet, I'm afraid - well, no cm here at base - but it is snowing this morning after a bit of wet sleet falling earlier on, and so far just a very slight dusting on my car outside.
Hopefully this is the start of something good.
Colder conditions and snowfall are on the forecast for the day today and into tomorrow, so I'll let you know how it goes in the morning.

The mild temperatures and rain stuck with us all through yesterday but the forecast was bang on for today with a return to negative temperatures and snow. The snow has come down quickly this morning, and at 8am there was already an impressive 13cm in the village. The snow is quite heavy which will be ideal for covering up the bare patches and building up the base on the lower slopes. Snow and cold temperatures will stay with us for the rest of the week.
