The Hanazono area will be opening tomorrow with the Hanazono Number 1, 2 and 3 lifts operating. Courses open will be Yotei Sunset, Parallel, Crystal Garden, Stairway to Heaven and Legend of Shinya. In other news Hirafu will be opening up further terrain from tomorrow morning it seems with the King Number 3 triple lift, Swinging Monkey and the debut of the Hirafu Gondola for the season as well. I'll post an update of course tomorrow morning.

A cloudy day for the most part yesterday with some blue sky on show at times, but no snow unfortunately.

This morning is thankfully a colder than yesterday and there's been a very slight dusting of snow but and we are expecting snowfall from late morning today and the chance of snow daily into next week. It's really not looking like anything really significant though which is what we really need right now. But, forecasts have been wrong so lets hope they are underestimating this time too.

Niseko Hanazono have their planned opening tomorrow, but they have not yet announced exactly what will be open - I'll update this page later today when we get that news...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 6th December 2013, 9:11am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Rain in the village this morning... but snow up top. Hakuba 47 and Goryu are reporting 3cm of fresh snow up there. In fact while it's a bit wet here at base, it looks like some decent sized flakes of snow are falling right at the moment up there. Yes, bring it on. While we expect a high of about 6 degrees this afternoon, hopefully tonight we might get some snow down here too and I can bring you an encouragingly whiter report tomorrow morning!

In resort lift news, Happo-one are saying that they will be opening up the Kokusai Number 1 pair lift for the weekend and the free car park at the base of that lift there will be open. Can't find any other 'opening' news from the other resorts just yet. It's all a case of waiting for the snow to arrive.

Official snow depth numbers and operations (as of 6th December 2013):

Hakuba Goryu
Upper - 70cm
Iimori - 0cm
Toomi - 0cm

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 6th December 2013, 9:25am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, sun at times
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
Good morning from Yuzawa and once again the sun is out early on though more cloud and the forecast is for rain from mid morning. Hopefully that will mean snow at higher elevations.

OK so to the news. Tashiro was planning to open tomorrow - but as of yesterday afternoon they said that they have 10-15cm of snow up there and need at least 30cm. Some courses have more snow and would be ok for opening, but the important bits around the Ropeway area don't have enough. So no opening tomorrow - well, unless we get enough snow overnight into tomorrow that is. We'll have to wait until tomorrow to know that. They are just saying that they will open now
as soon as possible.

Naeba will be able to open on that run in front of the hotel - it will be all man-made snow on that run for now.

Iwappara and Joetsu Kokusai will of course not be opening tomorrow either as planned as there is no snow on the majority of the resort slopes as of this morning.

Basically, we just need a good old fashioned huge dump of snow!

Snow forecast for tomorrow, hopefully down to town, and it should definitely be colder over the weekend.

Currently open - parts of Kagura:

Kagura main course - 1500m
Technical course - 500m
Giant course - 1100m

Mitsumata Ropeway
Kaguea Gondola
Kagura Number 1 quad (every day)
Kaguea Number 1 pair (just weekends for now - so not open today)

Furano Now!

Friday 6th December 2013, 9:44am
Weather conditions: Cloud to base level
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 40cm
The cloud cover has rolled right down the mountain until the base area so expected some flat light on the slopes at the moment. There has been a very light dusting of fresh snow around the village overnight. The good news is that the temperatures are trending lower back into solid negatives. From this afternoon snow is forecast to fall continuously through until Sunday afternoon and temperatures at upper elevations will plunge close to wintery double negatives.

Operating lifts:
Furano Ropeway - for access only.
Downhill Romance #2 chair 8:45am-3:00pm

Sailer (partially open) from top of Ropeway until bottom of Down Hill Romance #2 chair.
Spies (partially open) from top of Ropeway until bottom of Down Hill Romance #2 chair.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
After the clearer conditions of the last few days, this morning I have better news of snow falling on the top Yamabiko area. It's just cloudy down here but we may be on for some sleet/wet snow later on and fingers crossed tomorrow we might have some more snow on the ground here in the village - as well as more on the mountain of course.

Without new snow, I doubt there's much chance of further areas opening for tomorrow. So we'll just have to see what the situation is tomorrow morning, and I will of course let you know.

Yamabiko - 35cm

Madarao Now!

Friday 6th December 2013, 10:39am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: 0cm
Snow depth: 0cm
We have had quite a few clear and sunny days here in Madarao, which means that quite a bit of the snow that we had on the slopes has melted away. Right now it's just part coverage on the upper slopes, with no snow at the base area.

Madarao Kogen hopes to open next Saturday, 14th December. Let's hope we get enough snow for that to happen next week.

I'll update the report early in the week with the latest.   Read more ...

We are still waiting for that big snowfall but for today we have the the Zao Paradise pair lift moving.
