Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 17th January 2021
Monday 5th May 2014, 8:45am
It's a quite dull start to the day here, with overcast skies. Not warming up again too much, and a moderate wind.
Hirafu have the Ace 3 lift running this morning but the top King 4 lift is not moving at the moment - due to the wind. The other two areas seem to be open as planned for the moment.
Snow continues to melt away leaving more and more ground on show on the lower slopes in particular. Tomorrow is the last day of the season. Always sad to see the snow go, but we've had a long season and no doubt in another 5 months we'll be raring to go again.
I'll be wrapping things up tomorrow in my last report for the 13/14 season (which may be a bit later than usual).
Official snow depth numbers and planned operating lifts:
Grand Hirafu: Top - 185cm Base - 0cm
Ace Number 2 Center Four lift King Number 3 Triple King Number 4 Hirafu Gondola

Mostly cloudy, some sun right now
Cloudy at the moment, but there's a bit of sun shining through my window as I write this as well. Still, the forecast for the day is cloud and rain showers. For tomorrow, we should have more sun and no rain but perhaps still cloud.
Tomorrow is of course the last day of the season for GALA Yuzawa and Naeba, as well as the Tashiro Ropeway (and Tashiro area) of the Kagura resort.
Unfortunately, GALA Yuzawa is not opening today due to the quite strong winds forecast up there. Hopefully they will be able to open tomorrow.
Impressively, the whole of Kagura will officially remain open until tomorrow, according to the resort. Not bad going - especially considering the various ups and downs of the season in terms of weather and snow. It goes to show that Kagura is less affected by those than resorts nearer town...
Daishamen course at Naeba remains open, but the snow is getting thin on the ground and course narrow in places.
Current planned resort operations:
Until tomorrow: GALA Yuzawa (Most of Central and part of North Area) Kagura (Tashiro area) Naeba (Takenokodaira and Daishamen slopes - this may change depending on snow conditions)
Until 25th May: Kagura (the main Kagura area via Mitsumata)
All other resorts in the region are closed for the season.
Official resort snow depths @ Monday 5th May 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 210cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 90cm Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Monday 5th May 2014, 9:01am
Some dark clouds up there!
Hello from Nozawa with some very dark and somewhat threating looking clouds up above the mountain - there are expected, and look very likely to, bring us some rain during the day today and it probably won't warm up to much beyond 15 degrees here in the village.
Tomorrow - the last day of the season! - should bring sunnier skies.
It has been a busy weekend with people wanting to make the most of the snow while it lasts and while the lifts keep on moving. By tomorrow evening, it will all be finished and no doubt there will be some otsukaresama drinking parties going on in the village to celebrate the safe ending of the season.
I'll see you tomorrow when I'll wrap things up and say sayonara until autumn.
Lifts Planned operating lifts for today: Nagasaka Gondola Yamabiko Four Yamabiko Number 2 Four Skyline connecting Uenotaira Four Paradise Four Yunomine Pair
Courses Planned courses to be open: Yamabiko A Yamabiko B Yamabiko C Yamabiko D Yamabiko E Kogenashi Paradise Uenotaira
Nozawa Onsen is open until tomorrow, Tuesday 6th May. Read more ...

We have had spots of rain falling on and off since earlier on this morning here... earlier than we were expecting from what the forecasts were telling us. Lots of dark cloud around this morning so it does look and feel like rain. It's not set to warm up that much today with a high of around 12 degrees or just over forecast. I'd even go as far to say it felt a bit cold this morning (getting used to the warmer conditions of late!)
I'll be posting the last Hakuba Now report of this long, long season tomorrow morning. Hopefully the last day of the season (for all except the upper slopes of Goryu) will bring some sunshine.
Official snow depth numbers and operations at resorts remaining open (as of 4th May 2014):
Hakuba Goryu: Plans to be open until 11th May. Top area open, need to get gondola back down to base. Upper - 120cm Toomi - 0cm
Hakuba 47: Plans to be open until 6th May. Large part of Hakuba 47 remains open, though snow very thin in some areas. Upper - 50cm Lower - 20cm
Happo-one: Plans to be open until 6th May. Top areas (Riesen Grat, Usagidaira, Kurobishi, Panorama, Skyline) open. Need to get lift back down to base. Usagidaira - 60cm Lower - 0cm
Tsugaike Kogen: Plans to be open until 6th May. Top area remains open. Need to get Gondola back down to base. Tsuganomori - 136cm Lower - 0cm
Cloudy; peaks obscured at times; occasional light rain right (looks like the peak will be around noon)
We actually received a resort update from the Shin-Akakura Tourist Office on this occasionally rainy, not as warm as recent days Monday.
The Myoko Kogen Sky Cable, No. 3 and No. 5 lifts are running today, and the resort plans to keep the No. 5 open for tomorrow, the last day of operations.
Is the snow great? No, but it's there, and the weather should get much nicer tomorrow.
Wish it was nice today for Sogensai, the local festival involving the burning of a huge character for character for grass (艸) burned into Ikenotaira Ski Area, fireworks, the local and playing, local beer drunk, etc. Seems like every other year the fireworks end up illuminating fog.... Good excuse to drink beer, though, even if it rains.
Akakura Kanko: Myoko Kogen Sky Cable gondola and hotel No. 5 lift will stay open until May 6.
