Niseko Now!

Weather conditions: Still, clear blue skies.

Having a quick look at the weather patterns for the coming days, Hokkaido is going to get bombarded by a large low pressure system, which will be sitting directly over the island by Sunday. It's going to bring, snow, snow, snow and also some pretty windy conditions. So hold onto your hats and get ready for some deep stuff.

As for today, the sun is out, we're back to spring-like conditions and most freshies have been tracked out. Yesterday off the peak there were some freshies still to be had, but finding those today is going to take some real sweating to find, and may not be worth it in the end.

Recommendations are for the groomers in the morning, then after lunch as the cloud cover starts to gather, some off-hill entertainment may be the go, before it starts to dump. Activities such as Kat skiing, skidoo riding or even just chilling in an onsen would be the go.

Either way it's going to be a magic morning, so get amongst it and keep up with those snow dances.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 5th January 2007, 8:58am
Weather conditions: Clear blue sky.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night was the coldest we have had for a while, -10 at 8am this morning, and it's a beautiful, clear morning. No snow in the last 24 hours but it is predicted to return tomorrow afternoon and last through next week. The temperatures are predicted to carry on dropping so we should be in for some good quality powder and lots of it.

If you are going out today I reccommend the higher groomed runs, especially on Furano Zone, the lower sections are getting a bit too compacted now.

Weather conditions: BLUE SKY!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I thought things were a bit crunchy under foot this morning whilst crossing the road, no snow but a very crispy frost due to the -8 degrees here at the village. If yesterday was 'blue, blue, blue skies' then today would be a whole paragraph of 'blue'. I would guess that the deep blue sky here this morning is likely the reason for us feeling the cold of deep space up here in the mountains - it's WELL cold!

A stark contrast to whats in store over the next few days though - watching the forecast is showing a nicely padded dump of snow that has had rising centimeter predictions the closer we get to it. He Ho, here we go!

The Gondolas are swinging their way up the hill and there's people already shooting down the groomers from the top. Warm those knee joints up for this weekends powder!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Clear

"... and jocund day
Stands tiptoe" etc., but there is definitely no mist on the mountain tops this morning. The sky is a clear, cobalt blue from on side to the other. Last night it was rather cold. At lower elevations there (below 1,200 m a.s.l.) there is a definite "spring like" melt freeze cycle taking place. Thus there is a 3 cm crust in the valley bottom that can be walked on.

The weather forecast is still calling for snow this evening. But then only two types of people who forecast the weather in the mountains: more on that later.

Once again our on-slope team of observers report lots of rocks and other obstacles (mysterious holes, drainage ditches, odd bits brick-a-brack) on the lift accessible, groomed terrain. This is especially true at the lower elevations. Below 1,100 m a.s.l. the snow has been going through a diurnal melt-freeze cycle.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: clear sky
Temperature: Present: -6.5C
Maximum: 5C (-3C was observed at 1300 hrs. at 1730m a.s.l., above the Tsuga Ike Lift Company area)
Minimum: -7C
Wind: calm
Precipitation: nil
Barometer and trend: 927 hPa and falling slowly
Height of New Snow (HN): 0 cm
Height of Snow on Ground (HS): 21 cm
Crust: 3 cm

The back-country teams both dug snow-profiles yesterday. One was at 1,730 m a.s.l. on an East exposure with a 185 HS. This was near the mid-span tower of the upper gondola lift at the Tsuga Ike Lift Company area. The second team dug at 2,300 m a.s.l. with a 3 m HS. This was on South-east exposure above the Happo One Lift Company area. Both profiles showed similar developments in the snow pack: the upper 90 cm is faceting with a marked faceting just above the melt-freeze or ice layer at 95 cm (compression test: moderate with 14 blows producing a clean shear just above the melt-freeze layer in the Happo One profile. At the Tsuga Ike site this layer was not tested due to time constrains on the guided party involved.) Today another team is getting packed to leave even as this report is being typed. They are headed for the terrain above the Happo One Lift Company area. The dramatic results of this investigation will be posted here tomorrow.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 5th January 2007, 9:15am
Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful clear blue sky this morning with a teperature of -4 deg C at the village level that will most likely climb to 3 deg C when the sun hits.

The mountains received a light dusting of snow last night but there was no new snow at the village level. It looks like a great day to head up the mountains today with next to no wind and perfect visibility.

The snow is still forecast to hit tomorrow morning and will be well recieved by all of the ski areas of Minakami who have been very busy with snow making over the last week.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Bright blue sunny skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful start to the morning here with bright blue skies all around -- and some very cold temperatures. It really is cold and icy out there this morning with temperatures to around -13 in places. Brrrr.

Anyway today is a fine day to be out, even if snow conditions are not optimal. It looks like that cold front is due to move in tomorrow and especially from Sunday for a few days, and everyone is hoping that it will bring with it a considerable dump of fresh new snow for us to play in.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 5th January 2007, 10:43am
Weather conditions: Bright sunny day!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A glorious sunny day in Nozawa and it’s a perfect day to snap some action pictures! The weather really didn’t clear at all yesterday as predicted, but rather lightly snowed on the mountain all day. So the conditions today won’t be as icy as they may have been. There was a slight increase in the base depth on Yamabiko to 105cm. The mountain isn’t crowded at all and there is plenty of room on all the runs to have some fun. The temperatures are a chilly –6C to –8C at the top and –4C in the village.

The forecast still predicts snow and more snow over the weekend but also for high winds particularly on Sunday.

Yuzawa Now!

Friday 5th January 2007, 18:29pm
Weather conditions: Sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Well, it was a really beautiful day today. Fine blue skies all day. Let's hope it's the last one of them for a while! Yes, we need fresh snow - and it looks like it is on it's way.

It is looking like tomorrow will be a rainy day - there is a slight chance of some snow overnight especially higher up. But if you are in Yuzawa tomorrow, be prepared to be rained on. That rain will almost definitely change into snow higher up later in the day (night?) and then we have an excellent chance of "ou-yuki" - heavy snow - and possibly strong winds on Sunday.

So while no-one (who isn't mad) is moaning at the prospect of heavy snowfall, be wary of the probable weather conditions out there this weekend.

After Sunday, we have more snow forecast for every day of next week.

Now that's more like it. :)

Have a good weekend.
