And a very 'Happy New Year' to everyone celebrating the Chinese New Year!
Yesterday was not a nice day weather-wise. Wet and mild (though actually when I was out it actually felt pretty chilly) and there was all sorts of weather news on the TV... record breaking temperatures and the like. Warm and wet spells have been known to happen in the middle of the winter season; it's what happens next that is important.
There was that chance of snow on the forecast yesterday, but just 3-5cm is being reported by Kagura. There was actually a dusting of snow on our measuring point - just about enough for me to be able to justify adding 1cm to the reports this morning. I am probably being a bit kind there, but there have been days when I have ignored a few mm too, so I think it is fair.
It is colder this morning which is good, currently around -1C, with temps due to rise to around +4C in town later on.
We are also expecting sunshine and clearer skies today. Early on there's a bright but overcast feel to the morning with some blue sky in places.
The forecasts show the next snowfall due for us around Thursday, with a better chance of a decent amount of fresh around Saturday.
For now the best snow conditions will be found the higher you go. Groomers should be good though and as long as it doesn't warm up too much it should be a nice day.
Have a good one.

Cloud, blue sky, sun
Well, this morning is better than yesterday which was not a very appealing on in terms of weather conditions.
There is a dusting of snow to report (the resort reporting 2cm up top!)
At the moment the sun is out but there is still a lot of cloud around. If the forecast is right, it'll clear up during the day but shouldn't be warming up too much. Kind of more of the same tomorrow, perhaps a little milder; and then back to snow from Thursday.
There's been a fair amount of melt with the weather the last few days and snow conditions aren't going to be the best at the moment. We'll need another fresh delivery to get us back to fluffy powder. Still, there is of course a lot of snow around and it doesn't need to be perfect to have a great day on the slopes.
And I'm off out there now! :)
See you tomorrow.

Happy New Year!
And good morning to you all.
Yesterday the weather was a bit mad once again. I am no fan of strong winds; there're just... annoying. The wind messed around with the lift operations on the mountain and checking out the evening news there was some silly warmth going on in Japan, particularly in the south. A mid season blip please.
Up here in Niseko I am happy to report that this morning is much more pleasingly cold and somewhat calmer (though not exactly 'calm'), and there's 11cm of fresh snowfall.
At the start of the day, just the Annupuri Gondola is not managing to get open and all other lifts appear to be planning on moving as planned. Hurray!
There's regular snow on the forecast in the coming week so let's hope we can get back into a nice mid-winter (but strong wind blizzard-avoiding) pattern.
Mountain Base 6.00am: -10°, 15cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -13°,W7.8m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Mikaeri Weather Station: -12°, major snowdrift development, forestry road buried. Annupuri 1120m: snow depth 220cm. Hirafu Peak: -16°, strong westerly wind, snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -14.72°, 10cm new snow in last 24hrs, mountain base snow depth 157cm. Suttsu Weather Station: -5.5°, max wind 2am WNW16.4m/s, snow depth 39cm. Kutchan Weather Station:- 7.6°, WNW17.5m/s at midnight, snow depth 160cm. Cape Benkei: NW16m/s, Cape Kamui: W12m/s, pressure 1019hPa, wave 3.7m.
A typical winter weather pattern continues and the mountain is experiencing blizzard conditions. From midnight the wind started to drop although it is still strong. Above 800m cornice and steep open leeward slopes, the avalanche risk continues from the Feb 4 low pressure snow layer. Especially above 1000m, snow drift stabilisation is delayed due to the low temperature and a deep fracture is possible from rider stimulation. If wind drops below 10m/s the snowdrifts will start to quickly consolidate and stabilise. Consider Osawa cornice and Backbowl sidewall dangerous today.
Snow in the trees is good but a bit wind packed. There is the possibility of shallow surface avalanches easily occurring on 40 deg slopes. Avalanches often occur during or right after a storm. Do not stimulate cornices or knolls. Do not wait in the valley bottoms. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please respect the patrols decisions. Is your beacon on? They are not compulsory but are recommended. Have a good day.

Good morning from Hakuba.
Much better this morning!
It was good to see the rain turn into snow yesterday during the day on the mountain, and Hakuba 47 were reporting 5cm of snow by mid-afternoon.
It is definitely feeling colder and mostly cloudy (with a bit of light snow falling earlier on with a dusting on the ground). Some resorts are reporting a bit of fresh snow this morning - up to 2-3cm (Happo/47) and 5cm (Cortina).
We're expecting sunshine during the day today and perhaps more tomorrow.
Of course we all want to hear when the next decent snowfall is due. Looks towards Thursday and over the weekend for that.

Yesterday was characterized by strong winds throughout the day. There were many times during the day when so much snow was being whipped around that visibility in the village was at a minimum when walking or driving around. The good news this morning is that those winds have passed. There is 5cm of new snow at base and significantly more higher up, although it will be wind affected. The gondola didn't operate yesterday, so it will be powder heaven for the first couple of hours this morning.

Kind of a dust on crust morning today, although the crust is not all that bad and will probably improve with this morning's sun and its warmth.
About 7 centimeters of fresh today, on top of about 30cm of really wet snow.
Out in the trees, maybe not so much fun, but a great day for the groomers (hey, you can always improve that turn of yours!).
Make friends with a liftie, enjpy a cold one in the sun. Etc.

Aizu Bandai Now!
Tuesday 5th February 2019, 9:31am
Cloudy, foggy (clearer to the south)
Some fog is covering on the slopes in the Urabandai region this morning.
A little rain has fallen yesterday and the temps are still relatively warm so the snow conditions will be a little icy this morning.
The sunshine is now appearing in the southern part of Mt. Bandai, but fog remains here in the region to the north.
According to the forecast, it will be cold tonight and some new snowfall on the 7th.
Let's hope all the slopes will be covered with a nice fresh soft layer of snow before the weekend (it is a three day holiday in Japan).
The photos for today are from Nekoma (first one) and Alts Bandai.

Appi Kogen Now!
Tuesday 5th February 2019, 10:10am
Hello from Appi,
Beautiful sunny skies to greet us today with moderate westerly winds. Tomorrow should offer much of the same although the temperature will rise slightly into the pus zone. We do have some snow in the forecast for Thursday and into the weekend with temperatures taking a plunge into minus double digits.
As far as the slopes go you can expect the groomed slopes to offer some comfort from the rain/ice we had fall the last few days. Off piste will be crunchy to say the least as most of the slush has turned to lumpy ice here. Most runs are open today and no doubt with the long Chinese New Year happening will be particularly busy on the lower slopes.
Don’t forget the sunscreen !
Planned lift operations & course areas (subject to change due to weather conditions):
- Appi Gondola ** ON HOLD ** - Central Quad lift - Central Number 1 - Central Number 2 - Central Number 3A - Central Number 5 ** ON HOLD ** - Sailer quad ** ON HOLD ** - Sailer connecting - Vista quad ** ON HOLD ** - Nishimori ** ON HOLD **
* Bravo, Cruise 1, Cruise 2 and Dragon Tail tree runs should be open as normal when the lift operations allow - register to use them at Plaza 1st Floor
