Yuzawa Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 7:10am
Weather conditions: Sunny, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Even early on this morning it is looking very fine with clear skies all around, and the forecast is for a fine sunny - and warm - day. It is cold at the moment but temperatures may rise to around +10 degrees in the early afternoon. There is a cold breeze at the moment with stronger winds higher up (and this means that Gala Yuzawa is not opening again today).

As it is Monday the resorts will likely not be busy and so it will probably a good day to be out there. Tomorrow is set to be cloudy.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There is no new snow to report this morning but it is a cold start to the day but will be warming up fairly quickly as there are no clouds around and the sun is out. It's likely going to be an almost spring-like day again.

Looking at the forecast it looks like it might be the end of the week before we can expect more snowfall.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 8:35am
Weather conditions: Overcast, some sun.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
As forecast the wind died down a bit yesterday afternoon and the Triple Hooded here in Hirafu opened up for night riding. This provided a lot of untouched terrain. 2 or 3 runs last night in knee to thigh deep in the trees was a great way to end the day.

Overnight there has been no new snow fall in the village and on the mountain maybe only a couple more cms on top of yesterdays 30+ cm dump. Today is setting up to be a good one with lighter winds and better visibility than yesterdays stormy conditions.

The upper lifts, Hanazono will be operating today. All gates are also expected to open at some stage today. This is going to give heaps of untouched terrain.

Just now in the village the sun is making an appearance. However it will cloud up soon and there is a chance of some light rain at village level this afternoon. Hopefully it doesn't eventuate. Overnight should remain mostly clear and snow fall is expected again by tomorrow afternoon.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 8:37am
Weather conditions: Overcast with sunny spells.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was extremely windy in the morning but settled down in the afternoon and turned into a nice day. We received around 10-15cm of snow on the mountain through the day. No snow has fallen in town overnight and this morning is looking fairly bright with some glimpses of blue sky through the clouds. The forecast is predicting an overcast day with no snow today and then a good chance of snow tomorrow morning.

Yesterday there was a fun event at the winter village in Kitanomine, called the 'Banba-jin World Championships' where teams of people have races pulling a big sled with a horse on top! Last night was the weekly cultural evening at a restaurant in town which is well worth going to - some great performances of traditional music, dance and singing.

Minakami Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 9:57am
Weather conditions: Clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After the galeforce winds and snow of yesterday the weather has cleared today to reveal a beautiful blue sky day with a very light breeze. Most of the snow that fell before the weekend has been blown away in exposed areas and dumped in sheltred valleys creating large powder bowls.

The forecast for the remainder of the week is for more snow from tomorrow night followed by a few days of fine weather and more snow on Friday.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 10:00am
Weather conditions: clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful clear day this morning in Nozawa. Yesterday the snow was great all day and the same should be largely true about today. Furthermore many people will be heading home today so the mountain will be a lot less crowded. The temperatures are currently -2C at the top and -4C at Uenotaira while it is a very chilly -5C to -8C in the village. The visibility on the mountain is good.

The forecast is for the weather to vary between clear, cloudy and light snow over the next three days. Winds may be as high as 20km/h on Tuesday.

Naeba Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 10:08am
Weather conditions: Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
All open this morning. The Naeba Gondolas storming up to the top, with some of the lucky week-day skiers and boarders aboard.

Through the binoculars I can see the top 2 man lift running & loaded with fidgeting punters swinging their ski's and snowboards with anticipation.... it looks like it's just opened due to the lack of lines - the ski patrol have already been up there preparing the face - scoring up the snow pack with avalanche test lines..

Should be some big happy grins tonight....

We had no reports back yesterday of anyone making it up to the top of Kagura, so expect powder action in these parts... I would say EXCELLENT powder is to be had!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Monday 5th February 2007, 10:50am
Weather conditions: Sunny with clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

Beautiful bluebird sky day out there. All resorts ARE open today with most lifts running. Most of the powder has been well tracked and the best bet would've been first down the fresh groomers this morning. Due to warming temperatures, expected to be 10+deg.C , the snow will be softening up as the day progresses and all south aspects will be sun baked and heavy snow. Look for the shaded areas for the better snow today. Grab your sunglasses and sunscreen, get out there and enjoy the uncrowded slopes before the big three day weekend!

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Clear
Temperature: Present: -8.0 C
Maximum: 1.5 C
Minimum: -12.0 C
Wind: Calm
Winds aloft: no snow plumes from ridges and no clouds to observe movement of
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 925 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 98 cm
Foot penetration: 55 cm
Surface: faceted with surface hoar crystals80.5 mm), sized 1.5 mm
Density of surface snow: 120 kg/ cubic metre
Crust: none
Above tree line: Considerable
Tree line: Considerable
Below tree line: Moderate

N.B. hazard will increase with day time warming. The forecast high in the valley is 11 C.

Avalanche observations:

--one size 2, slab, NE aspect, slope 35 degrees, elevation 1,930 m a.s.l., crown width 40 m, crown height 100 cm, length of run 100 m/ 60 m vertical, failure plane: surface hoar 4mm, trigger: digging a snow profile (skier accidental), location: Hiyodori Mine above Tsuga Ike Lift Company terrain. This is an example of the "pockets of surface hoar" that have been referred to in previous reports.

-- two size 2.5, slab, SE aspect, elevation 2,150 m a.s.l., length of run: to top of fan, location: steep terrain on the east side of the Tengu Para overlooking the Oya Zawa, trigger: wind loading (the fractures where refilling during the day.

Compression tests: 07-02-03
site: Happo, 1,800 m a.s.l., E aspect, slope 34 degrees, sky clear, precipitation nil, moderate to strong west winds, Ta -2.5, Ts -9.8, time 1430 hrs., HS 300 plus cm. CTM @ 75 cm on decomposing fragments, resistant planar, x 2; CTH @125 cm, melt/freeze faceting, sudden planar, x 2
Same site but S aspect. CTM(18) @ 90 cm, sudden collapse, melt/freeze faceting, x 2; CTE (4) @ 10 cm, on decomposing rounds and melt/freeze interface, progressive compression, x 2.

On shaded aspects the new storm snow is overlaying the preserved low density crystals of last week's storm.

On southern aspects there are multiple melt/freeze crusts with faceting grains 2 to 3 mm.

Be aware when new snow buries these melt/freeze crusts of February 3rd. Wind transported snow appears to be bonding well to February 1st melt/freeze crust.

Snow pack is shallow around rocks. Large grain depth hoar can be found around ridge top rocks and trees.

Travel Advisory:
Use greater caution on steeper terrain as new snow accumulates on February 3 rd melt/freeze crust. Active wind transport has been taking place the past two days. Be wary around steep, wind loaded rocky outcrops.
