Furano Now!

Weather conditions: Heavy snow.

We had another good dump last night and we have reached one meter depth on the mountain top.
It snowed pretty much all day yesterday and the maximum daytime temperature was -5.
The depth in the village is now around 20cm.
Although it has snowed pretty much constantly for the last 24 hours it doesn't seem to be increasing the depth very fast. I would say that is due to the fact that its very light, powdery snow (due to it being so cold) and also the precipitation is not very heavy most of the time, it's just constant.   Read more ...

It justs keeps on dumping! Finally we've broken the 1m mark up on the mountain. Temps have warmed a little today but it is still expected to remain below freezing. Thursday looks to be the warmest day in the outlook with temps down low getting close to freezing. The warmer temps will hopefully help settle and solidify the base. Snow is expected to continue on most days in the outlook period. Unfortunately I've been way too busy to actually get out on the mountain as yet but from other accounts there's knee deep powder skiing currently.    Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sun, fine
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The light snow that started falling yesterday afternoon didn't really amount to much on the ground and there's no new snow overnight. This morning it is a bright blue sky day - cloud to the north that might move in later on. Temperature at the moment is +2 and may rise to around +7 in the early afternoon.

There's a chance of light snow overnight but we can't realistically expect much to fall.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud

Bright sunny skies this morning! The same runs and lifts running today as were yesterday so nothing changed on that front yet. It's about 0 at the moment and will rise to around +3 here today according to the forecast, which also tells us clouds will probably move in later in the day with some chance of light snow tonight.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Sun, clear
New snowfall: --

It's a fine but very cold morning here from early on with no new snow to report since yesterday afternoon. Not that many people around yet as there is of course still only a very limited area that can be used at the moment. So people are all still hoping for another decent snowfall soon. It looks like we might have to wait for that though as it doesn't seem to be on the cards for this week...   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 5th December 2006, 12:41pm
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night saw some snowfall for a few hours but then it ended for a while anyway. Today is sunny and clear with a mild but cold breeze. The slopes look very nice on the closed circuit tv cameras, everyone can't wait to get up there now. More snowfall is expected intermittently over the next few days so we are all expecting the lifts to start up on time for the weekend. While the snow level reported below states 12cm, higher up around Yamabiko it is much deeper these days and will only imcrease.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 5th December 2006, 12:46pm
Weather conditions: broken cloud and sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Temperatures were very chilly overnight with the sky opening up to create a beautiful full moon night. This cooling has made the snow very cripy and is definately helping to create a bomber base. Where the powder remains it has become even lighter and enticing indeed. The sky is still clear today and temps heve warmed in the valley and freezing level has risen to 1600 metres. Wind remains light and has switched direction and is coming from the South West.

Happo will be grooming as soon as snow depth allows and Goryu and Hakuba 47 are grooming and anxious to open other courses and lifts as soon as possible. All were busily making snow last night.

Tsugaike, Hakuba Cortina, Hakuba Norikura, Hakuba Iwatake and Hakuba San Alpina are all on standby and plan to open this coming Saturday.

3 major fracture lines approximately 2 metres deep could be seen this morning on Shirouma Dake in at the top of Hakuba Sawa bowl, Hakuba Shakushi Dake North ridge and Goryu dake. All fractures are on the South Eastern aspect, reacent lee slopes, that were heavily loaded over the last 3 days. Most probably came down with the first light this morning. Overnight there was a surface frost that formed with the clear cool weather that may cause problems on shaded aspects come the next snow fall and the warm solar radiation of today will no doubt cause a sun crust to form on southerly aspects that may also cause instability in the consecutive snow falls. Watch out around rocky outcrops during early season as there will be a lot of instability around these areas due to large temperature gradients and rapid warming on the sunny days.   Read more ...
