Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 1st April 2018
Thursday 5th April 2018, 7:26am
After getting used to the spring weather, this morning is a throw back to winter. Temperatures have dipped below freezing and some snow has fallen, blanketing the village in a thin layer of nice white snow. The last time we had snow was March 20. There are strong winds gusting at the moment and moving large trees around quite a bit. Above it is mostly cloudy but there is a bit of blue sky over the slopes and sun shining down. Read more ...
Geto Kogen Now!
Thursday 5th April 2018, 7:45am
Cloud, blue sky
Good morning from Geto Kogen.
A mix of cloud and rain during the day yesterday. But what's that... 1cm of snow at base! Yes, we have had a bit of snowfall, always a bonus once we get into April and while it's only a slight dusting always good to see.
Bit of wind this morning too.
Cloudy with some blue sky now and it should be a fine day.
There is going to be a number of events on at the resort this weekend.
Official snow depths:
Top: 330cm Base: 200cm
Number 1 Gondola and Number 1 pair lift are operating
Lotte Arai Resort: 336cm, 2.5°; Lift operations not released yet; Mamushigaeshi, Exciter, Legendary and Discovery courses closed; Ohkenashi Bowl, FK, North Bowl, Funaishi-zawa, Happy Place and Benzaku-zawa in the avalanche-controlled areas open; closing May 6
It sounds like there has been a bit of snow on the mountain - one of my secret agents is telling me 'up to a few cm' - though there is none down here at base to report. A few cm is hardly going to make a huge difference but it is still good to report, and at it is least good to have some colder conditions again this morning.
A cunning plan to investigate might well be required.
There is a lot of cloud around but now an increasing amount of blue sky appearing and the sun is out, so it is a nice morning.
However... it's windy too and most top lifts are on hold with a few more moving at reduced speed. Forecast looks like it will remain windy for the day so they might not get to open. Best to check with the resorts if that is an issue for you.
There is more chance of some snow over the next few days so fingers crossed we might even get to see some fresh on the ground.

Resort specific information (operations subject to change):
After that fine start yesterday, it got windy in the afternoon - enough to affect some upper lifts - and we got some rain too.
But! We also got some snow. Happo-one is reporting 2cm of fresh snowfall at the top of the Gondola station and 47 are reporting a dusting from mid areas upwards. None at base. Still, good to hear about that.
This morning we have been enjoying an impressively impressive sea of clouds on the Happo webcam (see below, that one is from 8am) - I always love that amazing scenery - but from down here in the village it's looking like a fine morning with a mix of blue sky and cloud.
It has actually been relatively chilly this morning too but it will be warming up during the day.
The forecast remains rather interesting over the weekend. I wonder how much snow we might get on the mountainsides.
Snow around base areas that are now closed is very quickly disappearing now with lots of ground appearing. For example, the base Iimori area of Goryu has changed from being mostly white to mostly brown just since Sunday. Still, you can (just about) ski or board back down to base at all four of the four resorts that remain open.
Ski resort information on Thursday 5th April 2018 (at time of writing):
A look at the webcam images below will show this but depending on where you are you'll get a different view of what the weather is doing this morning. There's cloud over the village but blue sky above it on upper slopes of the resort.
No cm of snow being reported by the resort so I wonder if there might be a dusting up there? Sounds like there was some over at Myoko.
It is still set to get colder over the weekend and that potential mix of rain and snow is interesting, how will that turn out?
Thursday 5th April 2018
Fresh snowfall since yesterday (as reported by the resort):
- Nagasaka Gondola - Yamabiko Four - Yamabiko Number 2 Four - Uenotaira Four - Paradise Four
The following courses remain open:
- Yamabiko area - Kokenashi course - Uenotaira - Paradise - Rinkan (use this course to get back down to base)
General resort operations information until Sunday 6th May:
The Gondola will be open from 8:10am daily; The Number 1 car park will be free daily; There will be no village shuttle bus between 2nd April and 27th April; A resort shuttle bus may operate between Hikage and Nagasaka (Number 1 car park) depending on snow conditions; Nozawa Onsen plans to remain open until Sunday 6th May. Cloudy, increasing blue sky
Hello and good morning from Yuzawa.
Some rain overnight in town but early on Maiko were reporting a dusting up top and foggy conditions and Kagura has been reporting snow (though no new cm).
There is still cloud around now but the sun is breaking out in places and it should be a fine day with less cloud as the morning foes on. It feels like there is a bit of a wind too.
It looks like we can still expect some rain over the weekend with the chance of snow at higher elevations. Temperatures are set to drop particularly around Sunday.
