Cloud, light rain/snow in places
Well we did have heavy rain late last night - and the roads are still wet this morning - but this morning is perhaps more cloudy than we thought it might be. Light rain and even light snow reported at some resorts (the snow at Kagura). The forecast still has us down for fine weather later on in the day and a high of 13 degrees in town.
Sun sun sun and warm temperatures forecast for tomorrow!
Nighta tonight is open at the following resort in Yuzawa: Naeba
Other resorts in Yuzawa are now closed for the season.
Centleisure Maiko, Ishiuchi Maruyama and Joetsu Kokusai in neighbouring Minamiuonuma are open until tomorrow (Sunday 5th April). Read more ...
Shiga Kogen Now!
Sunday 5th April 2009, 10:29am
It has been a clody start in Shiga Kogen this morning, but things look like they are starting to clear up and indeed the forecast is for decent weather today (and even better tomorrow).
Up at the top of Yokoteyama it was -4 earlier on and will be warming up as the sun appears so expect the temperatures to rise. Snow conditions remain pretty good in places especially higher up but with less fresh over the last few days there are some scraping sounds in some places. Still total cover though, so snow depth is not really an issue yet...
A cloudy morning in Naeba and about 3 degrees in front of the hotel. It's another fairly mild morning and will probably warm up more if the weather clears up as it is forecast to do later on.
The Dragondola and No2 Gondola are moving today.
Just to update news on resort operations this season:
Naeba is planning to be open until Wednesday 6th May. Snow will have surely disappeared from lower slopes by then and operations just up top. The Tashiro area of Kagura will also close on 6th May but the main area of Kagura - via the Mitsumata Ropeway - plans to be open until Sunday 24th May.
Yesterday was not such a great day to be on the mountain with rain throughout the day. This rain confirmed for most resorts that the lower slopes are now closed, it didn't affect higher elevations a great deal as snow levels have stayed the same.
Today is looking better, with warm temperatures and flat cloud cover, hopefully the sun will break through later today. The snow will be soft and thinning in places so watch out for rocks and grass coming through the snow.
The forecast for the rest of the week is clear days and sunshine, perfect spring conditions. At this time of year it's just about getting out there and enjoying the nice weather and having fun on the soft snow.
Official resort snow depths on 5th Apr 09: Happo-one: 25cm (Shirakaba) 160cm (Kurobishi/Usagidaira) Hakuba Goryu: 45cm (Toomi) 215cm (Alps daira) Hakuba 47: 140cm Tsugaike Kogen: Kanenonaruoka now closed 50cm (Maruyama) 260cm (Tsuganomori) Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Sunday 5th April 2009, 11:08am
It is a mostly fine morning with a dusting of fresh snow on the mountain to start the day here in Nozawa. About 5cm fell on the top last night although the base depths remain at 240cm at Yamabiko and 160cm at Uenotaira. Visibility at the moment is excellent and there is a 20km/h westerly breeze blowing. Temperature at the summit is 1C.
There is no significant snow forecast for the next few days. It will be mostly fine. Temperatures will remain warm; generally in the -3C to 3C range.
The Nagasaka gondola, Yamabiko 1 and 2 quads, the Uenotaira quad, the Yunomine quad and the Mizunashi triple lift are all operating today so there is quite a large skiable area open. It is still possible to ski to the bottom via Paradise, Utopia B, challenge and the Rinkan course. Coverage is patchy on the Rinkan course and Utopia B. Shuttle busses operate every 20 minutes from the bottom of these courses back to the Nagasaka car park. Read more ...
