Niseko Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 8:49am
Weather conditions: Semi Clear Skies, Cloud forming around the peak
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No new snow has fallen over the pass 24 hours, but the mountain is still in very good condition. Runs near the top of the highest lifted area are the pick of the bunch for todays high quality turns.

For the next few days snow should start to fall and get heavier as the week ends. Get your mind in gear for the powder express to start dumping on the niseko area.

Try and get out today and keep the riding fitness up for some hard work in the pow pow coming soon.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 8:56am
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a foggy and cold night, there was some light snow falling very early this morning but that has stopped now and it is just cloudy with a good chance of clearing up later in the day. It's still cold this morning and probably won't warm up too much during the day (up to around +2 degrees maybe). It is looking likely that tomorrow will also be a fine sunny day with temperatures rising to around +6 degrees.

The snowy weather conditions are still forecast to be with us by Saturday night/Sunday through until Wednesday.

Just a quick update... this afternoon we took a quick drive around Yuzawa to take a look at the resorts. Mostly places are not busy at all today and steep slopes at many resorts, especially at town level, are not open yet due to the shortage of snow. The snow that there is looks far from best conditions as well. Iwappara aren't operating their gondola at the moment and a number of lifts at other resorts are not moving yet. So at the moment the best choices are most definitely the higher resorts where there is more and better snow.

We took some photos and added a new gallery - see further down this page to see the new photos.

This morning the sun has been out every now and then and generally a fine day with good visibility but low clouds started to move in this afternoon.

There is good news! The forecast from Sunday to Thursday is now looking quite decent with snowfall forecast on each of those days. Fingers crossed it will be the major dumping of fresh powder that everyone is waiting for.    Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 9:03am
Weather conditions: Overcast, snowing.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
No snowfall yesterday or last night but it has started up again this morning. It wasn't predicted to snow again untill Saturday so this is a bonus! The temperature was -6 at 8am this morning and predicted to stay below zero all day. Yesterday got a bit warm during the day due to the clear sky and sunshine so hopefully it will remain overcast today.

The weekly forecast is indicating a drop in temperature from Saturday and snowfall Saturday through to Wednesday.

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 9:12am
Weather conditions: Broken clouds (50% or more cloud cover), light South-west winds observed from valley floor (light cloud lazing by Happo One).
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
"... and jocund day
Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops:"
---- "Romeo and Juliet"

The Bard never spoke truer words. There is a thin mantel of cloud lightly draped on the summit of Nori Kura Dake. Otherwise the main peaks are resplendent this morning. This is fine for the scenery buffs but rather snorkels on the big one for the skiers and boarders keen to shred 'er up (down I mean). The good news is that the weather forecast is calling for precipitation in the form of snow from Saturday to Tuesday.

Our on-slope team of observers report lots of rocks and other obstacles on the lift accessible, groomed terrain. This is especially true at the lower elevations. Below 1,100 m a.s.l. the snow has been going through a diurnal melt-freeze cycle.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m) the 0700 hr. reading is:
Sky: broken clouds
Temperature: Present: -2C
Maximum: 1C (3C was observed at 1345 hrs. at the Sakka base lodge on Happo One)
Minimum: -3C
Wind: light from the south-west
Precipitation: nil
Barometer and trend: 923 hPa and steady
Height of New Snow (HN): trace
Height of Snow on Ground (HS): 22 cm

There will be two teams going outside of the ski-area controlled terrain to do snow-pack studies today so stay tuned for their action packed reports. Snow may be always white but it is always changing.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 9:14am
Weather conditions: Cloud, sun
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's a cloudy start to the morning but there are some signs that those clouds are already clearing up and there are some blue skies already visible and the sun is out in parts of the area. It was a very cold night and the roads are very icy this morning but there is just a slight sprinkling of new snow to report since yesterday.

So as we wait for that next snowfall, when will it come? Tomorrow looks like it will be a fine day, then the snow is forecast to be with us from Saturday for a few days.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 9:24am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a slightly warm afternoon yesterday much of the snow at the village level has melted now, with patches of ground showing through. The depth of snow ino the village is now around 10cm.

It is a slightly cloudy day today with pacthes of blue sky and currently a mild temperature of 4 deg C. It looks like it will warm up towards noon, similar to yesterday and be another cold night.

The weekend is looking very promising for snow with an occluded front moving in from mainland Asia that is expected to bring a decent dump of snow from Saturday to Monday.

Houdaigi is the pick of fields in Minakami at present, with all lifts operating and a decent covering of snow. Norn ski area still only has onbe lift operating and Oana is looking more like a grass ski area after yesterdays warmer temperatures.

The backcountry is still a long way from being enjoyable, with many small trees still exposed and creeks still flowing. A good 2 - 3 meters of snow is required to fill things in. If you are going backcountry watch out for hidden creeks and trees and remeber to take your Avi gear and a friend!   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 9:28am
Weather conditions: blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The sun was pouring through the window when I got up this morning - and it still is! There's a little bit of light cloud lurking around the summit of the main naeba hill but from here in the village, the rest of the sky is blue, blue, blue.

There's a light breeze and a steady -3 degrees celsius at 900 meters.

Word out, is there's some weather coming in for the weekend! Here's looking to that dump of much needed snow. An appalling start to the season this year but we're bleeding in to January now so expect lots and lots of snow coming this way!

It can only snow! :-)

All the gondolas are running, plenty of people around, and still lots of fun to be had on all those groomed runs!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Thursday 4th January 2007, 11:15am
Weather conditions: Overcast and light snow, to clear.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
High overcast cloud promises a smattering of much needed snow, whilst locals brace for major snow storm expected on Saturday. Mountain conditions hard packed top to bottom, with patches of powder still available to the lucky few. Still 100cm of base at the top of the mountain, whilst we are currently experiencing light snow here in the village.

Temperatures are still generally mild here in the village (-1C to +2C) but are below
freezing at the top lift (-3C to -6C).

The forecast is for the weather to clear today and remain so on Friday but early on Saturday snow will begin again. All up we are expecting around 70cm over the weekend.   Read more ...
