Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Snow

Snow depth: --
Winter is truly back with us again, and causing more than a bit of chaos as well.

There have been avalanches at 4 resorts in the town over the last 24 hours - Ludens, GALA Yuzawa, Yuzawa Nakazato and Naeba, involving a total of 25 people (both resort staff and skiers/boarders) - perhaps lucky that there has been only one serious injury so far. Route 17 has also been affected with it being closed for a period. There has also been some problems on the train lines, with a train apparently derailing just to the north of Yuzawa near Ishiuchi leaving 140 passengers stranded for a number of hours - that situation is not yet cleared up and so travel by local trains will be affected today.

It's obvious that with the huge amounts of snow in the region resorts are having trouble keeping up with things and extra care must be taken if you decide to venture out onto the slopes - some of these avalanches are happening within resort areas.

The snow is still coming down this morning and with it very cold temperatures and some gusty winds at times - not the most pleasant of days to be out on the snow.

In resort news, Naeba are not yet opening up any of their courses in order to go out and check the runs and see if they think it is safe enough to open - they say that they may open later on depending on what they find out there.

Gala has closed off the connections with Ishiuchi Maruyama and Yuzawa Kogen and only the central area and part of the northern area will be open.

Only the Mitsumata area of Kagura will be open today.

All in all, perhaps a day best left for a soak in the onsen! We'll update the page later on hopefully with more news.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing lightly
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a heavy day of snowfall and winds, things have calmed a bit, for the time being. We had about 50 cm on the top and 30 cm on the bottom since yesterday, but much has been blown off by the wind. The weather report calls for more snow and wind in the afternoon, so the earlier the better! All lifts should be open after they finish shoveling all the snow! Gandolas are in operation on all ski hills. Enjoy your face shots!

* Todays poor visibility up high and rapid snowfall, combined with recent underlaying wind slab make the backcountry an unwise choice today. There has been a lot of avalanche activity within and near to the resorts and this will continue to be the case. So please be very careful if you do decide to venture off the runs. The South and East faces were hit by that warm sunshine of Jan. 1st and this has created a substantial sun crust and sliding layer on the solar aspects. All aspect have seen continued new snow loading and wind loading from winds that don't seem to make up their mind. This wind has created multiple layers of wind slab. The most noticeable layers and layers of concern are a soft wind slab on top of a one finger slab down 50 cm yesterday and most likely close to 80 or 90 cm down today. As new snow started to fall yesterday we saw the Yellow Snow from the Gobi. A yellowish snow containing sand that is usually seen in spring. This snow has an unusual texture and does not bond well with top surrounding layers.

The general snow temperature through the upper pack is hovering around -10 degrees C and this means that we are not seeing general bonding trends. This means that snow is staying light and fluffy for longer but not bonding to neighboring layers as fast as it might usually do in this region.

There is plenty of great pow to be had on the slopes so enjoy lift accessed riding on the multitude of un-groomed pistes in the Hakuba region.

There have been skier triggered and natural slides in and outside of ski areas with in the last 4 days at Cortina, Goryu's South face and BC areas.

Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Snow again this morning with probably about 30cm or so since yesterday. It's another very cold morning as well with some fair winds so people checking out the slopes are getting well wrapped up. Fairly low visiblity as well, but if you are out there you'll be rewarded with some great powder conditions and not many other people to crowd out the slopes.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 4th January 2006, 11:11am
Weather conditions: Heavy snow showers
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday the snow bucketed down in the morning dropping around a foot of fresh in just a few hours. As the day progressed the snow turned to sago snow (frozen rain) which was a little heavier. Last night the wind picked up and blowing snow made walking around the village a little uncomfortable. Today we have heavy snow showers with breaks of sunshine and the snow is back to being nice dry Hokkaido powder.

Even with all the new snow the wind and warmer temps of the last couple of days have caused considerable consolidation of the snowpack. Still there should be some good powder to be found in more protected areas. The slopes have been fairly busy over the last week as many Japanese have holdiays around the new year. Still lift queues have been few.   Read more ...
