Minakami Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 6:54am
Weather conditions: Overcast and snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow started falling again last night around 23:00 and continues to fall this morning bringing another 15 cm to the valley and 20cm to the upper mountains. The snow is expected to continue to around midday which should bring a total of nearly 40cm to the valley.

There are strong gusts of wind from the North today at times which will be scouring ridges and loading Southerly slopes. Caution is advised in the backcountry today with the weight of the new snow on last weeks sun crust.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 6:59am
Weather conditions: light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
At least 15cm has fallen overnight in Nozawa and it will be a great day on the mountain today! The official base depths have not yet been updated. Temperatures are very cold. Yamabiko is currently -9C and the village is sitting at -5C. The visibility on the mountain is poor at the moment but we are set for light snow and some clouds that will begin to break up by days end. The holiday means there are quite a few people in the village and so the mountain may be slightly crowded again today although by all reports yesterday with similar numbers was still a great day.

The forecast is for light snow to continue today but for the weather to be fine and sunny on Monday. On Tuesday morning light snow will begin again.

Furano Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 8:38am
Weather conditions: Moderate to heavy snowfall.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We received a good 10cm of snow last night but it is fairly wind-blown. The wind was very strong at 7am but seems to be easing off now and hopefully the gondola will be open as usual. The forecast is predicting snow all day today and then easing off tonight and tomorrow will be overcast with little or no snow. Should be some great snow in the more sheltered areas of the mountain today, if there are problems with the Kitanomine gondola in the wind it's a good idea to head over to Furano Zone because the cable car can handle stronger winds. The visibility will be pretty bad in the wind so take care.

Niseko Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 8:45am
Weather conditions: Snowing steadily.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It started snowing late afternoon yesterday and has been falling fairly steadily since then. This morning there is 15-20cms of new snow. This has come with the strong westerly wind therefore there will be substantial wind drifts developing on leeward slopes.

It is windy here in the village and currently still snowing steadily. Watch for the strong winds up high however this is expected to ease later in the day. The snow fall will also ease during the day.

All gates are closed and will probably remain that way for the day. However there will great riding to be found within the resort. Tomorrow the winds should ease up and it will be overcast with occasional snow showers.

Late update:

Today has been fantasic. Lots of snow! Up high about 15-20cms on the groomers! More in the trees. With the upper lifts not running today the queues at Hirafu were a bit long this morning.

The wind is strong, really gusty up high. It has been snowing all day, heavily at times.

The winds should ease a bit overnight. If so the upper lifts and Hanazono should open up tomorrow providing heaps of untouched snow!

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 9:56am
Weather conditions: Snowing lightly to cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba presently sits under clear blue skies andthe sun is shining! Higher ridges were exposed to some fierce winds yesterday afternoon and evening. Expect to find scoured ridges and wind loaded areas in South East facing slopes.
A dusting of snow (trace) fell overnight but the hill is still great with great coverage all over and packed powder/fresh powder if you look around. Still crisp and cold at 8:00 AM but expect sun radiation on lower slopes and south facing slopes.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

N.B. hazard will increase with day time warming and increased load (either wind loading and/or new snow)

Avalanche observations:

-- one size 2.5, slab, SE aspect, slope 38 degrees, elevation 1,850 m a.s.l., crown width 50 m, crown height 40 cm, length of run 250 m top of run-out/fan

Compression tests: 07-02-03
site: Happo, 1,800 m a.s.l., E aspect, slope 34 degrees, sky clear, precipitation nil, moderate to strong west winds, Ta -2.5, Ts -9.8, time 1430 hrs., HS 300 plus cm. CTM @ 75 cm on decomposing fragments, resistant planar, x 2; CTH @125 cm, melt/freeze faceting, sudden planar, x 2
Same site but S aspect. CTM(18) @ 90 cm, sudden collapse, melt/freeze faceting, x 2; CTE (4) @ 10 cm, on decomposing rounds and melt/freeze interface, progressive compression, x 2.

On shaded aspects the new storm snow is overlaying the preserved low density crystals of last week's storm.

On southern aspects there are multiple melt/freeze crusts with faceting grains 2 to 3 mm.

Be aware when new snow buries these melt/freeze crusts of February 3rd. Wind transported snow appears to be bonding well to February 1st melt/freeze crust.

Snow pack is shallow around rocks. Large grain depth hoar can be found around ridge top rocks and trees.

Travel Advisory:
Use greater caution on steeper terrain as new snow accumulates on February 3 rd melt/freeze crust. Active wind transport has been taking place the past two days. Be wary around steep, wind loaded rocky outcrops.

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 11:14am
Weather conditions: Light snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a beautiful day yesterday it is back to being more wintery. There was about 5cm of snow on the car this morning and it is snowing now but not heavy snow. There is also a fairly strong wind blowing about as well this morning which is preventing more than the Mitsumata part of Kagura to open early on but parts of Kagura may well open later if the winds die down. Gala Yuzawa did open this morning at a later than normal time of 9:30am but as with other resorts if the winds get worse expect operations to be affected.

The snow clouds look set to clear up by the middle of the afternoon and then tomorrow will likely be another fine sunny and mild day.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 11:24am
Weather conditions: Stormy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Although it was forecast, it still surprised us, snow everywhere - a bit of a storm last night and a good 25cm on everything this morning. It's windy and cold, Naeba is not to be seen anywhere, and the diggers are charging up for their snow clearing. This is all a complete contrast to yesterdays blinding sunshine.

No Gondolas at Naeba open as of yet, the top of Kagura closed too with these strong winds... maybe we'll get a look in later today? All depends on the wind.

Whilst Fridays reports were of waist deep powder at Kagura and yesterdays were a little bleak, we can be sure of stacks more of the stuff today... As soon as this storm drops we're set. Naeba, Kagura, here we come!

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 4th February 2007, 11:53am
Weather conditions: Sun, some cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was about 10cm of new snow overnight in the region and it was still snowing early on but since then the clouds have cleared up and there's a fair bit of blue sky now and it is turning into another of those fine days - quite a lot of them this season. The new snow is once more welcome and the slopes have got another topup meaning conditions today are good.

It started off cold this morning but things are warming up thanks to the sun. Looking to the forecast it looks like we have a few more days of sun and fine weather ahead of us.   Read more ...
