Yuzawa Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 8:57am
Weather conditions: Rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Heavy rain overnight and it is still raining now but has really brightened up in the last 30 minutes or so - I can even see some blue sky appearing. Higher up on the mountains there's a fair bit of cloud cover and visibility at Kagura looks poor.

Kagura are reporting 3cm of fresh snow up there this morning but right now just cloud and a temperature of 0 degrees. Here in the town it's 7 degrees at the moment.

The forecast had things clearing up as the day progresses and perhaps a sunny start to the day tomorrow followed by some rain.

Naeba plans to open tomorrow, but it will be with artificial snow as there's no natural snow on the ground over there yet.   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 9:21am
Weather conditions: Rain, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday we were 'treated' to some spectacularly hard rain at times and although it's still a wet start to the day down in the village, up at Kagura there has been a few cm of snow fall, the resort reporting it as 3cm.

Naeba is planning on opening tomorrow with the artificially made snow on the one run in front of the hotel. Sadly it's not looking likely that we'll see any natural flakes down there for a while yet.

There's a few sprinklings of snow forecast for higher altitudes over the coming few days but nothing significant.

Right now it's light rain but that is likely to clear up later on, with a current temperature of +3 degrees in the village and +1 at the top of Naeba.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 9:28am
Weather conditions: Cloud, rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Some more white sprinklings going up on the mountain overnight with the snowline creeping down to around 1200m this morning. That means rain down in the village though - hard at times - so a rather wet and cloudy morning in Nozawa.

The forecast is mostly unchanged, meaning we are looking at a mix of cloud/sun/rain with chances of light snow at higher altitudes over the weekend and into Monday. Still nothing significant in terms of snow though, so the resort will remain closed for a while longer.

We'll keep you up to date!   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 9:37am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
We have more white to report this morning from Shiga Kogen. Admittedly not a huge amount but it is feeling more winter like early on with up to 15cm of snow being reported (Yakebitaiyama) but more like 5cm where I am (Maruike) at the moment. Light snow is currently falling from the skies. It's -2 outside at the moment.

This snow will probably clear up though later in the day with cloud forecast for later on and it looks like it will be mixed weather over the weekend.

Yakebitaiyama is planning to be part open from tomorrow morning - the No 4 romance lift will be servicing the South Course at that resort.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 11:09am
Weather conditions: Sunny
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A beautiful blue sky day in Furano but very cold. There was a dusting of snow in the village overnight but a reasonable amount fell on the ski area, this combined with snowmaking over the last few days has meant that the Sailer course has been opened, skiable from the top of Furano Ropeway to the bottom. This means open courses are now: upper Spies, Sailer, Shirakaba and Romance.    Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 11:24am
Weather conditions: Heavy rain.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday saw continuous rain throughout the day and it carried on all night. Hail fell for a while this morning and higher places are reporting snowfall. Tenjin received 5cm overnight and their slopes now look white again, rather than the grass we've seen recently. Other places over 1,000m have been reporting snow with as much as 10cm falling in some places. The rain is set to continue over the weekend so if the temperatures stay cold, Tenjin might have the option of opening a lift or two. Though with the forecast for early next week looking as if the warmer weather will return, this might be a bit premature.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 11:43am
Weather conditions: Cloudy with little drizzle.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hakuba is on the cusp of the winter season....not yet but soon, mind you, soon!

No snow to report in the valley, only rain. Higher elevations (above 1800m) have been receiving small amounts of snow, but warm days have done a number on the build up of any base. Enthusiasts are limited to grass skiing, mountain hiking/biking, and sipping sake in the onsen.

Current forecasts are not looking overly great for any massive cold fronts yet, but as usual when it dumps it really dumps in Hakuba. 1m in 24 hrs is not unheard of.

Until the first snow arrive we eagerly wait with baited breath. When it looks like anything is forming we will be on it and report the details to the masses.

Myoko Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 16:45pm
Weather conditions: Rain and sleet
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The day started with lightning and thunder—often a sign of heavy snow. But it just isn't cold enough yet; sleet and rain fell through the day, with occasionally strong northern winds. Clearing toward evening, it was clear that snow did fall higher up the mountain, from about 1,300 meters up. The word was for snowfall toward Sunday....   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Friday 4th December 2009, 22:59pm
Weather conditions: Cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just a quick update though there is not much to report as we haven't had any more significant snow at all since the last report. A slight cover of fresh snow about 1300m and now we officially have 20cm on the Chuo course and 15cm on Utopia.

Tomorrow sees the official opening and safery ceremony for the resort. It will take place at 11am on the Uenodai course. This ceremony will take place whether the resort can actually open or not - and right now with the general lack of snow on the slopes that will be 'not'! We will just have to patiently wait for the snow to arrive. The ropeways are still moving - just can't ski or snowboard down.

A glance at the forecast shows a good chance of snow higher up from later on tomorrow night with rain lower down in the village and hopefully continuing through Monday with hopefully snow down to the village.   Read more ...
