Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 4th December 2008, 8:48am
Weather conditions: Sun, clear blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not a cloud in the sky this morning. To the north in the Minamiuonuma valley there was a thick carpet of low lying fog but coming on up into Yuzawa revealed blue skies and once again some fantastic clear skies.

The good news is that this snow we have been waiting for is still on the schedule for tomorrow - starting in the morning - so we hope to bring a much different picture tomorrow.

It is already about 7 degrees and will rise to around 14 during the day here. Too warm!   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Thursday 4th December 2008, 9:55am
Weather conditions: Clear with light winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Mostly clear all yesterday and overnight with temperatures dropping close to -9 this morning. Today will see the winds pick up from the south and cloud move in later in the day. The temperatures will rise throughout the day and stay mild overnight with some rain moving through in the early hours of the morning. Later tomorrow a cold front will move through and the freezing level will gradually lower to sea level bringing snow to all levels. Things are looking promising for some good snowfall accumulations out of this system. The snowfalls should now last well into Monday.

Just like to make a couple of comments on how I'll be reporting snowfalls for this season.

Generally I will report the snow depth info from the official figures supplied by the resorts. If snow depths vary across the resorts I will normally take an average between them. Be aware that these snow depths are representative of the amount of snow on piste and that much greater depths will often be found off-piste, especially in some of the bowls where drifting occurs.

For the New Snowfall amount I will report on the amount of snow that has fallen since my last report. This will be done from personal observations and I don't claim will be 100% accurate but will give a good indication of how much new snow has fallen. The amount is not just an overnight figure but for the entire time since the last report. Please note that the amount that falls doesn't directly translate into the same amount of extra snow depth. The snow that falls in Niseko is often extremely light and fluffy and can compact significantly if there is a little warming or strong winds. So although I may report snowfalls of say 30cm this may only translate to an increase in depth of 10cm or so. If new snowfall always ended up in the same amount of increase in the snow depth we'd end up having snow depths of 13m's or more which of course we don't.

And more of the same today. The sun is out again, hardly any clouds (any?) and it will be another mild day.

The snow up top is getting a bit crunchy, so the new snow forecast for tomorrow and Saturday will be most welcome! I hope to bring some fun snowy news to you tomorrow morning....   Read more ...

Naeba Now!

Thursday 4th December 2008, 10:49am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Running out of things to say with this run of fine weather! It's another glorious morning in Naeba - the sun is out, it's mild (7 degrees) after a chilly start and no clouds in the sky. The run at the bottom of the mountain is looking all lonely, now surrounded by the green/brown of the slope.

Kagura Mitsumata is trying to cope with the lack of fresh snow - the Gondola Line and Family Courses are now "connecting runs" (probably meaning they are narrow) with the main area to have fun in now the main Kagura area.

The Tashiro area of Kagura is planning to open this Saturday and Sunday - just for the two days... they'll close again for the week until the proper opening for the season on the 13th December.

So, we need some new snow. Good news is that it is on it's way and hopefully it will be snowing this time tomorrow.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Thursday 4th December 2008, 11:48am
Weather conditions: Sunny, some high overcast. Quite windy.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Nice day, but no snow

Another sunny day in Furano. Again. A bit windy, with very high overcast.

This is all good, if you like sunny days and warm temps. But it's terrible if you're waiting for snow. It's going to be an unbelievable 10 C tomorrow! This just has to stop.

Thankfully, it's going to cool down over the weekend, and some occassional snow is forecast on Saturday and Sunday.

We really need some snow, and Saturday forecast is still holding firm. Let's hope it's a lot.
