Niseko Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 8:21am
Weather conditions: Sunny, Clear Skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Again it's one of those magical days, where the sun is shining, the weather is going to stay below zero and Youtei-san is making an appearance.

Early morning on the groomers is definitely the pick for the day, as there hasn't been any fresh snow over night. Conditions up high and slightly further a-field will also be worth investigating today.

Towards the end of the week we should be expecting some further snowfalls, which will top up the snow-depth by the weekend.

Minakami Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 8:39am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Last night brought around 2-3cm of fresh snow to the upper mountains but no new snow at the valley level.

An overcast but slightly warm day in Minakami with a current temperature of around 4 deg C and no wind. It looks like it will stay fairly constant throughout the day today then clear up tomorrow for a clear sunny day.

The forecast for the comming weekend is still snow on both Saturday and Sunday with relatively low temperatures. This should make for good on-piste skiing at all of Minakami's ski areas but the backcountry is not quite filled in enough yet to venture too far.

Furano Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 8:42am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was a great day on the mountain with up to 20cm of fresh snow in some places. It carried on snowing lightly for most of the morning but stopped in the afternoon and there was no snow overnight. It is -4 at the moment and the predicted maximum for today is 0.

Today I would reccommend heading to the wide groomed areas, such as 'Sailer C', where yesterdays snow will have packed down nicely and there will be plenty of room for those long, wide turns.

Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 8:43am
Weather conditions: Cloudy and presently snowly lightly.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning Sports Fans! The present and forecast weather for today is for an overcast sky (you'll be in the clouds if you are more than 300 m above the valley floor).

Presently there is snow falling in such light amounts that it won't add up to much. There is more precipitation forecast for this evening.

Back-country travel report:

Yesterday a party toured up from the Tsuga Ike Lift Company gondola top station (1,580 m a.s.l.) to the Tengu Para (2,200 m a.s.l.). There we measured a height of snow (HS) of 200 cm in a fairly representitve place. We continued up in poor to fair visibility over varied wind affected snow on a generally western exposure. Ski penetration of 10 to 15 cm. From the top of Nori Kura Dake (2,436 m we descended in similar visibility on a southern aspect with fair and some good skiing quality. We traversed the Tsuga Ike Shizenen and worked our way back to the top of the gondola station that we had started from. The snow quality deteriorated with loss of altitiude and the crust on the southerly aspects became very pronounced. The several creeks took care in crossing. This was no place to be alone.

Hazard Assessment:

Below Tree-line: low, but special mention of open and poorly covered creeks.

At Tree-line: moderate

Above Tree-line: moderate

Naeba Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 9:26am
Weather conditions: grey sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
An invisible mountain this morning, Naeba that is. It's a trusty -2 in the village and it appears to have been snowing for about half an hour - there is a dusting of fine flakes on the ground. It's a moist flake and the snow pack seems to be quite warm - so there will be limited ice on the gelande today. Which brings me to tell you about yesterdays gelande conditions; There seems to be a lot more snow at the higher elevations - a soft snow pack with a good depth in most areas for hard bottom bangers with no pain! So I guess if your learning to snowboard today, up top is the place to be as there is the extra padding for your precious posterior!

Also good reports coming back from Kagura last night - Snow was falling quite heavily in the afternoon creating a nice dust coat for a sneak of powder fun. It could well be a good morning up there in the Kagura hills today - dependent on the top quad being open - nothing reported on the site as yet.

I would put my money on Kagura for a good day.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 9:42am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light rain
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Not the best of news this morning - no snow overnight but light rain is falling early on in the town. Gala Yuzawa and Kagura are reporting snow falling this morning and after some snowfall at Kagura yesterday, that resort is surely the best bet for the best conditions in Yuzawa at the moment. Not much of a wind and temperatures around +1 at the moment.

The resorts in this area (as in many other areas) are in need of more snow, and it is looking likely that it will be with us from Sunday to Tuesday. Even so temperatures are still looking milder than they usually are for early January.   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 10:06am
Weather conditions: Cloud, light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A small sprinkling of snow in the region this morning. The clouds are still with us at the moment with some very light snow falling from time to time, but the forecast is for the clouds to clear up today and for us to get sunshine and fine weather - and for that to continue for the next few days as well.

It's looking like the next snowfall we can expect will be on Saturday with snow also forecast for Sunday and Monday as well. Bring it on!   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 3rd January 2007, 11:25am
Weather conditions: Overcast.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Another overcast start to the day in Nozawa. The snow forecasted for yesterday did arrive yesterday and overnight on the mountain, although not enough to add significantly to the base depths. There is currently 105cm at Yamabiko and 90cm at Uenotaira. In the village there was light rain. It was earlier snowing quite heavily both on the mountain and in the village. All in all, with the good solid base, and the fresh snow it should be a great day on the mountain. Temperatures are –3C to –4C on the mountain and +1C in the village.

The forecast is for the snow to continue throughout the day to clear to night and Thursday should be clear and sunny.
