Cloudy and snowy
Good morning from Naeba everybody.
Today we have yet another powder day! With 14 cm of fresh snow fallen overnight and a total of 60 cm of snow fallen over the last 3 days, we are currently experiencing some really nice conditions for riding.
It's a little cold today with some places of the mountain experiencing relatively strong wind so wrap up warm before you hit the shred! At the moment it is also snowing extremely hard making visibility a little difficult. Stay safe out there kids!
Looking on we are expecting snow most days this week with a small break tomorrow however the cloud cover is not expected to lift.
Sun is still in the forecast for later, but right now there's a real nice snowfall happening (we prefer gray and white to sun anyway: the snow stays a lot nicer without the baking of the sun. Spring not included). Not a great accumulation yet, but it's actually picking up the pace at base level right now. Just that more fun when the sun does come out.
Wind was a factor in the backcountry yesterday, with slabs seen in a lot of places. There was some pretty good wind through the night, too, so this is another day to be careful about where you are going.
Not all the resorts have reported in yet this morning, but those that have are almost unchanged, just maybe a little warmer.
There's more fresh snowfall to report this morning. Another 14cm of it, making 48cm over the last three reports -- at base. With more snow at higher elevations and top lifts affected yesterday, we should be on for some lovely snow conditions this morning. And checking the start-of-the-day lines for the lifts, it looks like lots of people have the same idea.
Light snow is still falling now but it may clear up during the day, leaving us with a calm weekend and maybe some sunshine (particularly on Sunday).
It should be a very good day!
Niseko Avalanche Report:
Niseko base 6am: -11℃, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.5℃, strong NE wind, 40cm snowfall and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1150m: -15℃, NNW10m/s, 30cm snowfall with snowdrift development. Hirafu 1250m: -17℃, strong westerly wind, 20cm snowfall and snowdrifts. Kamui cape lighthouse: NW8m/s, 1011hPa, 1.7m waves.
The isobars started to spread out but strong wind is persisting in higher elevation. The snow has fallen mainly in western 800m area and made cornices and snowdrifts develop in large scale. The top 30cm of the new snowdrifts is likely to slide from Feb 1st pre-low pressure snowfall, but the lower half is consolidating and stabilizing. The cornices are hard and dense, but would break at 120cm depth. The avalanche risk remains high in wind-affected leeward open steep and cornice slopes above 1000m. There are no safe conditions in mid-winter mountains. Be conservative until the weather stabilizes.
The snow in the trees is in good shape, however is highly wind affected and a bit heavy and hard to get back up after a fall. Gates’ opening is not decided. Please follow the ski patrol’s decision. One track left under a rope will lead many others to do the same and increase the chances of accidents to happen. Do not duck ropes. Visibility is poor and beware of frostbites. Have a nice day.
Resort specific opening news at time of writing (subject to change during the day):
Night skiing is planned until Monday 20th March 2017 at the Niseko Annupuri, Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Village resort areas. There is no nighta in the Hanazono area. Read more ...

Morning from Yuzawa.
More snow fell through the day yesterday and I measured 8cm by 4pm. This morning there was another 6cm on the ground and so that's 14cm to add to the report.
Kagura are reporting 10cm of fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10-15cm.
It is still snowing now so there's a bit more on the way today though we are expecting it to stop sometime this afternoon.
And tomorrow should be calm and sunny so an excellent Saturday should be on offer at all the resorts around Yuzawa. Come early to beat the crowds.
Just two resort-specific notes:
It looks like the Tashiro part of Kagura is going to be closed again today along with parts of the main Kagura area. Due to windy conditions up there.
And the South Area of GALA Yuzawa may be closed due to heavy snowfall of the last few days. If you are planning on going to GALA and enjoy that part, best to get the latest from them. Will report on that again early tomorrow morning.

Snow clouds still over Nozawa
Good morning from Nozawa.
Some more fresh snow this morning though perhaps not as much as expected. It is still snowing lightly this morning but the local forecast seems to point to clearer skies this afternoon. And tomorrow too, when it should be clear and sunny from the start of the day. A great way to start the weekend.
(The resort seems to be reporting 5cm of fresh from base up to Uenotaira and then 35cm on Yamabiko. I think I'm going to have to get up there myself to check on top number!)
Forecast is looking good for further snow coming in from the end of the weekend and into next week.
Lifts operations: All lifts plan to be operating apart from: - Yunomine pair - Mizunashi triple - Challenge pair - Utopia pair
Most courses at Nozawa Onsen are open. Courses not open are: - Grand Prix Read more ...
Appi Kogen Now!
Friday 3rd February 2017, 8:59am
Good morning from Appi,
What an absolutely amazing snow day yesterday !! I think I’m understating the 52cm of fresh snow yesterday and last night. It was kind of hard to put a firm number on it given the winds that we had. Heavy snow fall all day until the wee hours of the morning. With the strong winds and wind chill temperatures of -30 something on the mountain it made for rough going whether you were skiing, driving or heaven forbid walking. Only 3 lifts were in operation yesterday due to the conditions and sometimes we were down to two - today is a different story though.
All planned lifts and gondolas should be in operation today. Right now snow falling, relatively light winds and a temperature of -6 outside my window. Warming temperatures over the weekend and sunny skies should bring fairly big crowds this weekend too.
For those who are here today you can expect a brilliant day out there... Mt.Nishimori will be a great spot for those who enjoy waist deep powder and the Sailer and Second runs after grooming will be a cruisers delight.
Get up, get ready, and get out here. See you on the mountain.
Planned operating lifts at time of report (subject to change due to weather conditions):
Appi Gondola Central quad Central number 2 Central number 3a Central number 5 Central number 6 Sailer Gondola Sailer quad Sailer connecting Vista quad Nishimori
There has been a nice dusting of 4cm of powder overnight and a little more light snowfall is expected during the day. It is looking like a superb day with sun beaming down on the resort, and we should have sun over the weekend as well. Read more ...

Apologies for the missed report yesterday. Our reporter has had to leave Zao temporarily due to personal reasons. They should be back by tomorrow.
Mixed conditions today by the looks with snow falling in places and somewhat clearer in others and fast moving clouds moving overhead; fairly windy in places.
Tomorrow should be calmer and milder with the chance of some sunshine.
All lifts apart from the following appear to be operating today: Paradise Number 3 pair Karamatsu pair
All courses apart from Kotan are open.
Official snow depths (as published by the resort itself): Summit - 120cm Paradise - 210cm Chuo - 210cm Utopia - 160cm Uwanodai - 120cm Yokokura - 130cm
