Snow and weather reports posted on Sunday 26th May 2019
Tuesday 3rd April 2012, 8:52am
Warmish this morning in Minakami with grey clouds overhead. Bit of a strong wind around as well. The snow is pretty good considering though a bit soft and spring like. Temperatures are supposed to fall tonight and we will be back into light snow for a few days with the sun supposed to reappear for a fine day on Sunday. This strong wind could be around for a couple of days and might cause a few problems for the exposed lifts. Read more ...

Cloudy but bright
Good morning. It's a cloudy and very warm start, but today is all about the wind. Already strong winds blowing but they are forecast to get worse into the afternoon and
A look around town and it seems that all resorts in Yuzawa are closed this morning apart from the below: - lower part of Iwappara - part of Kandatsu - part of NASPA Ski Garden - part of Nunoba Other than that, lifts are not moving.
A high of around +12 degrees and very strong winds this afternoon, followed by some rain (and possibly snow higher up) into tomorrow.
Today is perhaps best left for a bit of onsen and sightseeing! Hopefully tomorrow the winds will be much calmer.
The winds they are a-blowing! And in some style too. Set to get stronger as well, I think I might try to fix my feet to the ground!
Kagura is totally closed this morning due to the windy conditions. It's not quite as wild at Naeba, though still enough to keep the gondola from moving so just the base of Naeba open this morning.
The wind is supposed to get stronger later in the day as well so we are in for a ride. Perhaps some rain (snow up top?) overnight tonight and into tomorrow.
Hopefully tomorrow some normality will return, though it still looks like it will be windy - just not as bad as today.
Time for an onsen!
Resort Operations, 3rd April (subject to change) Naeba: Base only open due to wind. Kagura: All areas of Kagura closed today because of wind. Official snow depths Naeba: 260cm Kagura: 380cm Read more ...

You may have seen reports about strong winds on the television news. Well, here in Zao things have started off with just a slight wind and the resort open as planned. Just cloudy conditions but a mild morning with the temperature currently +7 degrees in village.
That very strong wind looks likely to be with us later in the day though and it may well affect the lifts if the resort is still operating when the winds arrive. Looks like it is going to be very, very windy out there later on. And probably into tomorrow as well actually, but hopefully less so. We might also wake up to more snowfall from overnight, so I hope to bring news of that in my report tomorrow.
Current lift operations at Zao, as of 3rd April - subject to change:
Uwanodai Area Sky Cable (open all year, but closed from 7th May for maintenance) Onsen No1 pair lift (until 8th April) Onsen No2 quad lift (until 8th April) Zao Ropeway (open all year, but closed for maintenance 9th-25th April except Saturdays and Sundays)

Shiga Kogen Now!
Tuesday 3rd April 2012, 9:30am
It's a fairly warm morning here and quite windy - though nothing compared to how windy it is supposed to be getting later on towards lunchtime and this afternoon. There is a very high chance that the limited lifts moving this morning may not continue once the forecast winds arrive in this region - it is supposed to be extremely strong winds on their way.
It's one of those 'best to find something else to do' days I think. Anyone for an onsen or a trip to see the monkeys at Jigokudani?
The good news is that overnight tonight temperature should drop and we be on the receiving end of some fresh snow. Tomorrow looks like it might still be quite windy but if there's some fresh snow it will definitely be an improvement on today.

In the report yesterday I mentioned stormy like conditions. Well, this morning the wind is blowing and affecting resort lift operations - Tsugaike is closed, the upper lifts at Happo are not moving and the Gondolas at both 47 and Goryu not moving early on. With stronger winds forecast for later on this morning and this afternoon, perhaps we won't see much action today.
Neither rain or snow falling early on this morning. It is too warm for snow and currently about +6 degrees in village with a high possibly creeping into double digits. But it is still on the forecast for later on today as temps seem set to drop from tonight. We will probably still have fairly strong winds tomorrow though it will be colder and a decent chance of snow to be falling. Snow clouds set to hang on until the end of the week perhaps?
Official snow depths and operations @ Tuesday 3rd April 2012 AM:
Hakuba Goryu: Gondola and upper lifts affected early morning due to strong winds. Official snow depths: Alps daira - 265cm; Toomi - 130cm
Hakuba 47: At time of writing, Line D and Line A open with other lifts on hold due to winds. Lift tickets are now cheaper until closing. Official snow depth: Upper - 234cm Lower - 150cm
Happo-one: Upper lifts closed due to wind this morning - basically left side of mountain open at the moment. Lifts normally operating: Grat quad, Alpen quad, Happo Riesen quad, Nakiyama No3 triple, Gondola, Panorama pair, Kurobishi No2 quad, Skyline No2 pair and Kita One No3 pair. Lift tickets are now cheaper until closing. Official snow depth: Usagidaira - 210cm; Sakka - 70cm; Nakiyama - 70cm.
Tsugaike Kogen: Tsugaike Kogen closed this morning due to strong winds. Lifts normally operating are Ropeway, Gondola, Tsuga No2 pair lift and the Hannoki pair. Official snow depth: Upper slopes - 280cm Lower - 140cm
Planned ski resort closings in Hakuba and Otari, all subject to change:
Hakuba Goryu: Toomi area open until Sunday 8th April. Upper area hopefully open until 6th May.
Hakuba 47: 47 plants to be open until 6th May.
Happo-one: Upper slopes plan to be open until 6th May.
Tsugaike Kogen: Plans to be open until Golden Week
The Hakuba Cortina, Norikura, Iwatake, Sanosaka and Minekata resorts are all now closed for the season.
As the wild weather continues today, for those intrepid explorers who like to ski and board in typhoon-like conditions, less options are available this afternoon.... just the Shirakaba No1 pair lift remains open at Happo and 47 haven't been able to open up more. The wild wind, while not quite as strong as it was, is still with us and rain has started falling.
Today is definitely not the best day of the season!
But hopefully, there will be news of snow to report tomorrow morning. Read more ...

Moderate snow, low cloud cover
Current conditions are cloudy with snowfall that has progressed in heaviness as the morning turns into afternoon. As much of mainland Japan is on high wind alert today and tonight we can expect to see some lift closures over the next day or two if and when the winds reach Hokkaido and indeed from early this morning a number of lifts have been on standby.
So some snowfall for the past couple of days, and it is forecast through to the weekend - turning into a quite respectable end of season flurry. There is a decent chance of us seeing some rain especially in town later on today though, so go to be prepared for that...

Not too much action today on the slopes in Nozawa. Strong winds closed down the entire mountain by lunch time and skiers could only enjoy the morning on the runs. The top lifts were closed from the start. The Challenge and the Hikage runs were still good fun to ski before the wind picked up more and forced everything to a halt. Guess can't complain much as this is the first day in a great season where lifts came to a complete stop. Good excuse to explore Nozawa Onsen a bit more and enjoy a nice, hot onsen.
Cloudless blue skies and not many people around yesterday. The bottom runs were a bit slushy but good fun to ride and on top the conditions stayed nice all day with still some powder to find.
Still a bit of wind on the forecast for tomorrow with colder weather and snow rolling in tonight. We are looking forward for a nice fresh top up here in Nozawa.

Very windy, rain
It will probably be the same story as most everywhere else, but the wind is blasting Myoko today. The word earlier was that Akakan lifts were closed (without the gondola, there's no way to get up to use the other running lift). Ikenotaira was operating earlier in the day, but at the current wind speeds I doubt anything would be going. And did I mention the pounding rain? Ah, well, we've had so few down days throughout the season, one day off won't hurt....
Akakura Onsen: Kumado No. 3 and 4 lifts open April 2 to 8 Akakan: Sky Cable Gondola and No 3 lift, through to May Ikenotaira: Shirakaba Capsule, Ikenotaira Quad and AB Dai 1 lifts, until April 8 Suginohara: Closed Seki Onsen: You can't stop with 580cm of snow on the ground (open through May) Myoko Ski Park: Closed Kyukamura: At least open for kids' sledding (lift closed) Tangram: Closed Madarao: Closed
