Yuzawa Now!

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 8:27am
Weather conditions: Blue skies with just a bit of cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday ended up being more cloudy than it was earlier in the day, but this morning we have (slightly hazy) blue skies from early on. It is about +4 degrees at the moment and will probably be rising to around 9 degrees later on. Only a slight breeze and so resort operations should be as normal today.

Tomorrow should be fine with sun forecast for the day and perhaps getting a little warmer than it will get today.   Read more ...

Weather conditions: Blue sky with clouds

So yesterday was pretty good. Fantastic in fact; wind blown powder snow allowing all who seek to spread their boards & skis far and wide, it was possible to traverse and access all sorts of areas that wouldn't normally be accessed due to the snow conditions (the compressed wind-blown dense type). Also due to the previous day/nights high winds there were many wind lips set into powder faces for those all-so-much-fun launch/take-off's into powder heaven. Nice. A little soft in the afternoon on the south faces but other than that fresh lines all the way through to the afternoon. Oh, and they even opened the top, top 2 man lift at Kagura!

It's warmed up a bit here today, 4 degrees outside at the moment, we have blue skies with cloud again, the wind has also dropped though there is still a bit of a breeze.    Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 9:07am
Weather conditions: SUNNY
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It's sunny this morning with a grey haze over the Sea of Japan visible from Akakura. Light sprinkles of snow are coming tonight, but probably only enough to maintain snow depths.

The pick of the day is Suginohara once again. A blue sky as far as the eye can see, no crowds and less windy than Akakura today.

Your Myoko area levels for today:
270cm (Akakura Kanko Resort);
260cm (Akakura Onsen);
155cm (Ikenotaira);
195cm on the bottom (Suginohara);
520cm (Seki Onsen);
150cm (Madarao Tangram Ski Circus);
155cm (Madarao Kogen);
250cm (Myoko Ski Park);

Shiga Kogen Now!

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 9:10am
Weather conditions: Sunny blue skies, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Just some bits of cloud hanging on but generally it is a sunny morning with a lot of blue sky. It is definitely not as cold as it has been over the last few weeks and while it started off below zero in some areas, it will probably quickly warm up a bit. So it should be a fine day out there.

The snow of the last few is melting from the roads, but there's still some untouched snow out there - not many people on the slopes!   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 9:21am
Weather conditions: High cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The heat and sun yesterday made short work of the fresh snow though shaded areas where snow had been wind-deposited still had some remnants of Winter. Nice soft-packed runs and though the bottom runs are showing a lot of ground cover the new snow was a bonus and makes the last few days of this week through to Sunday when all resorts will be closing there bottom lifts that much better...the weather this weekend is looking to be great, well worth a trip away.

All of the resorts will unfortunately be closing their bottom lifts after the weekend but this is a big weekend coming up for events and competitions on all of the big resorts.

Hakuba Goryu will be hosting the Annual 'Tri-Modal Challenge' this Saturday and Sunday, April 5th & 6th. A fun event for all modes of sliding; Ski, Board and Telemark cross course comp and party.

Hakuba 47 will be hosting 'Selection' a freestyle comp for Skiers and boarders alike on the 5th and 6th.

Happo will host their annual JAL Supper Mogul Cup featuring Hakuba Local and Olympic medalist Uemura Aiko on April 6th.

Tsugaike Kogen will host their 3rd annual Ski Mountaineering Race this coming weekend for all those speed hiker, randene skier folk.

Enjoy the new snow and the great spring events while you can.

Backcountry travel advisory:

The recent spring squalls that have deposited up to 1 metre of new snow on leeward slopes is a very big concern and should not be taken lightly. Slopes will be sliding easily and may produce very big slides inside and outside of ski area boundaries. there have been some very close calls in off piste and backcountry areas of late and end of season powder enthusiasts should be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS as the new snow over riding March's isothermal spring thaw is VERY UNSTABLE. As temperatures rise expect skier/boarder triggered and natural avalanches on any slope of 30 degrees or more. Lower angle slopes that are solar radiated and under tension may also slide. It is advisable to stay to ridges, lower angled simple slopes and densely spaced trees on shaded slopes for the safest descents. If you are unsure of the stability of the slope you are looking to ride, don't risk it!

There are a lot of protruding rocks, gaping holes, big dirt patches that have been covered by the recent snow. Be especially careful on solar aspects and expect to see slides on them. Fluctuating temperatures have created crust and melt freeze conditions with fresh snow sitting on top that are not bonding well. Conditions are extremely varied and travel in the backcountry is not recommended today.

Furano Now!

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 10:00am
Weather conditions: overcast, cold winds
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cold and windy morning today. Not as windy as the other day, so lets hope the ropeway stays open today. The snow pack is solid again today, with temperatures getting below freezing overnight. There is still good cover top to bottom.

The season has another month left. There are minimal guests on the resort at the present, and there will be less and less over the next month.

The season started back at the end of November, the resort is now over 4 months of operations and still going strong.

The Spring operations plan is 9am to 4pm, until May 6th.

The Furano Now! reports will continue until the end of the season with regular updates - with a few reports each week to give you the latest - but conditions will pretty much be similar each day now, though with gradually less snow!, as the season approaches the end.

Just to remind you all of how good the season has been, I have a few more pics left over from the season I will put up to get you excited about next season.    Read more ...

Another beautiful Blue Bird Day in Nozawa
The snow that was forecast for last night does not look like it eventuated but there may have been a dusting up top
Yesterday was a magic day on the slopes with some locals calling it one of the best days of the season. Was great powder in the morning and nice and cold up top
The bottom was pretty sticky but really only needed to go there on the way home

Outlook is for more sunshine to come so should warm up on top and make for some fun spring conditions

Niseko Now!

Thursday 3rd April 2008, 10:05am
Weather conditions: Overcast
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Overcast conditions with a few drops of rain falling in the village this morning. The top half of the resort is covered in cloud and with the freezing level at the 650metre level, up to 10cm of snow is predicted by the end of the day. Not a lot of wind about at the moment, all lifts are currently in operation, but they look to strengthen throughout the day.

The freezing level is expected to drop to the 350metre level tomorrow night but after that it will rise to 1900metres with a mixture of snow and sunshine for the next couple of days.
