Hakuba Now!

Wednesday 31st December 2008, 8:22am
Weather conditions: Cloud/Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was an interesting one with warm temperatures and clear skies East of the Alps and snow falling slowly at the top of the resorts. Snow was a mix bag with some pockets of heavy powder, some slush down below and some alright groomed runs with a little bit of fresh on top.

Some of the lower runs were looking pretty patchy but luckily the snow came down into the village as forecast and was falling fairy decently by late afternoon. It petered out a bit later in the night leaving about 20-30 cms in Echoland this morning.

Goryu are reporting a 5 cm base increase from yesterday and only 15 cm of fresh snow...winds are strong from the North-East and may cause some lift/gondola upsets...check with resorts for operation details. Lift/Gondola lines will be long this morning.

All snowmen on the Weather forecast!

15cm of new reported at Goyu Alps Daira at 1515m but there is 20cm of new snow over the last 24 hrs at 750m in Imori. The winds have been predominantly NW and on the increase up high but are still light in the valley. Temperature at 1515 was -7 C at 06:00 and is presently -1 at 750m.
There may be the chance of larger slides releasing from the melt freeze crust of Dec 23rd today with the addition of the new snow.
Surface slufs as well as slab avalanches with in the new snow are probable. South slopes that were affedted by strong radiation yesterday morning will find the new snow riding over a thin melt freeze layer and may have high instability.
Strong winds up top mean increased size of cornices and deep wind deposits on South Easterly slopes.
Extreme caution around cornices and below cornices on steep convex terrain.
-Increased snowfall adding load to buried week layer
-Increase in loose snow avalanches and suffs
-Falling tree bombs (Possible triggers and cause of avalanches as well as overhead hazards)
-Increased instability of solar aspect start zones especially under cornices and very steep slopes.
-Increased caution advised around rocky outcroppings‚ cliffs and well spaced trees in start zones.
-Development of cornices in lee slopes
-Lee side loading
-Windward scouring of ridges and rock out-crops creating uneven loading of slopes
-Due caution on cross loaded slopes
-Poor bonding at or around buried crust
-Stay away from steep and convex terrain

Danger level 4 : High

Natural and human triggered avalanches likely.

Use this information as a guideline only.

Naeba Now!

Weather conditions: White skies with white-outs

I can't quite believe that Kagura has had no snow this morning (they are currently reporting no new snow!), as we have a good 50cm on the tables outside. Lot's of snow everywhere, just what we all ordered actually!

The big hill can not be seen from Asagai this morning as the snow continues to fall and the wind whistles or rather 'clouts' the village with it's brief strong gusts. It's nice and cold too, with -6 outside.

The Dragondola appears to be closed today and there will be limited operations around Kagura - all dependent on the conditions up there - I guess they are probably digging themselves out. Just had a look at the web picture of Kagura and to me it looks like staff are busy doing the 'Yuki Kaki' - So maybe we can expect a 50+cm report from them later in the day.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Weather conditions: Snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Dec 31st

Strong winds and snow in Minakami this morning with reasonably cold temperatures (-5 to -10)
It looks like the winds will pick up during the day today and be at their strongest around lunchtime. So best to choose a resort that is not too prone to wind closure. (i.e. keep away from Kagura and Gala.) My recommendations for Minakami would be Houdaigi, White Valley and Norn ski areas.

The snow is here for the next 3 days but the wind should start to ease into the new year. The forecast is for the wind to be strongest around midday each day and ease off in the evenings, so night skiing might be a good option for tonight.

The Jan 3-4th weekend looks like a great one in Minakami with over 1.5m of new snow, weak winds and some sun predicted. A great way to start the new year!

The strong winds and large amount of forecast precipitation means that it would be best to stay on piste or in trees close to the field for the next few days. Visibility is likely to be poor with many obstacles only just covered by the recent snow. Jan 3-4th may be the first real chance at some decent BC if the weather clears as predicted.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Wednesday 31st December 2008, 9:16am
Weather conditions: Cloudy, snowing
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It is a cloudy, snowy day in Nozawa Onsen. The resort reports 10cm new snow overnight up on Yamabiko and the snow depth as being 125cm. It is currently -10 degrees up there and -2 degrees in the village, where we have about 10cm of new snow also.

The prediction is for light to moderate snow to continue falling for the rest of the week with freezing levels below 500m, so the village should receive a fair bit of the white stuff. The wind is expected to continue blowing at about 30 km/h from the west for at least the next few days.

Great snow conditions today so enjoy the last chance to ride in 2008!

All lifts are expected to operate today except Kandahar

Niseko Now!

Wednesday 31st December 2008, 9:18am
Weather conditions: light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Light to moderate snowfalls continued for much of yesterday and then last night the heavens really opened up giving us one of the largest overnight falls of the season so far and bringing the depth up to 2.5m. The snow though has been accompanied by strong winds and once again there's plenty of drifting around the mountain. The winds are also restricting lift operation this morning with only the lowest lifts currently operational. So frustrating when there's all that fresh powder just waiting for some turns! Hopefully the winds will moderate enough to let people further up the hill soon.
Anyway at least we will be ushering in the New Year with some awesome snow conditions. Hope everyone enjoys themselves tonight and I advise moderation because if all the lifts open tomorrow you'll not want to miss it!

Weather conditions: Snow

Maybe not as much as we were hoping for overnight with maybe 10cm or so. Naeba is reporting 20cm of new snow this morning. It is snowing though and forecast to continue throughout the day and still into the weekend, so these next few days might bring with it a decent amount of snow. Strong winds up top are affecting operations at Kagura, but this morning other resorts are not affected as far as we can tell at time of writing.

Nighta tonight at the following resorts in Yuzawa:
Yuzawa Nakazato
Yuzawa Park
NASPA Ski Garden

Today also there will nighta agsin at Ishiuchi, Centleisure Maiko and Joetsu Kokusai.

Shiga Kogen Now!

Wednesday 31st December 2008, 11:00am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday started off mild and then got colder as the clouds moved in and it started snowing. Overnight that has brought us around 10cm of fresh snow to Shiga Kogen, with resorts showing increases in snow depth of between 10cm and 15cm. It is much colder than it was yesterday with the thermometer outside saying -10 at the moment, and some fairly strong winds especially it seems in the central/Ichinose area of the resort though it doesn't seem to be strong enough to close any of the lifts.

It's New Years Eve of course, so there's a fair few people out there and there will be much partying tonight in the hotels scattered around Shiga Kogen. Have a good one and see you on the other side....

The following resorts will be open for nighta tonight:
Sun Valley
Ichinose Family
Ichinose Diamond

Furano Now!

Wednesday 31st December 2008, 14:57pm
Weather conditions: High clouds, moderate wind, snow in the morning.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Hi Furano Fans! Happy New Year's Eve!

The good thing about doing your snow report in the afternoon, is that you get to report higher numbers as the snow is falling!

Sorry for delay, but the good news is that we have at least 15 cm of new stuff since yesterday. I say at least, cuz it sure seems like more when I'm shoveling out my driveway, then the driveway at work, then starting over, but I digress.

Weather summary: Snow in the morning, moderate winds, cloudy on top. High temp of 0 C today.

The Prince still maintains they have only a 95 cm base. I don't know where they are putting all their snow, but it sure isn't where they are measuring the base. I guess it's possible to keep packing down and have the same base, but not likely. I may have to resort to secretely installing my own measuring device on the hill, and then to serve the public good, inspect it daily. Sacrifices, sacrifices.

The Prince is putting on some pretty cool New Year's festivities tonight. Free snowmobile rides for the kids, snow cat rides (aka "snow groomer") for everyone--at least they better let me ride cuz I've always wanted to. Add in a torch run down the slopes, and fireworks at midnight, and that's a lot of fun for one day.
