Niseko Now!

Tuesday 30th November 2010, 9:33am
Weather conditions: Partly cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday snowed on and off throughout the day and then overnight it got quite heavy laying down another 20-25cm at village level. This morning has dawed mostly clear and although a few snow showers are expected from time to time it looks like this system has mostly moved through. Another weak low pressure system will race through tomorrow bringing a bit more snow in the evening. Unfortunately it's definitely going to get quite warm by Friday with some reasonable amounts of rain expected. If we were to look for any silver lining in that at least it will pack down the new snow and when it refreezes in the cooler air on Saturday we'll have a nice solid base for the next snowfalls to fall on. We'd still prefer it not to rain but oh well.
The resort hasn't opened any lifts today but there's got to be enough snow up top for them to do so if they wanted to. Possibly tomorrow?   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Weather conditions: Sun, clear skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The rain did arrive yesterday and it was coming down with some force late on last night.

Higher up on the mountains there has been another sprinkling of snow - nothing really significant but will surely help the run that is open up at Kagura which has now been made slightly wider than before... they are saying it is 40-50m wide.

Down at town level there is no snow to be seen and the sun is out this morning with bright blue skies and a high of around 11 degrees expected this afternoon. It is looking like both today and tomorrow should see these clear conditions continuing with perhaps some snowfall on Friday before more clear weather over the weekend.

It would be good for Kagura to be able to get more open but it is still early, no need to worry!   Read more ...

Zao Now!

Tuesday 30th November 2010, 10:12am
Weather conditions: Cloud, some blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I bring you good news this morning.

By yesterday afternoon there was around 10cm or so of snow in the village and overnight that has continued. There is now up to 20cm of snow lower down and reports say that there is maybe 30+cm on the upper slopes of the Zao resort this morning.

The resort is now quickly trying to get things open as quickly as possible... we might see the Utopia area open up later on. If I get any news of the resort actually officially opening I will post another update later.

For now the snow has stopped and it is still cloudy but with some breaks in the cloud and blue sky showing through.

Quick update - there's not quite enough snow to get some lifts moving today unfortunately. The next snowfall seems likely around Friday evening.

Clouds have cleared up and it has turned into a beautiful day here in Zao.

I'll update this report tomorrow morning with the latest.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 30th November 2010, 10:15am
Weather conditions: Clear blue sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Still no sign of lift movement in this area but it has been a good couple of days, with cold nights and a bit of snow falling. Tenjin has reported 2-3 centimetres and their slopes are starting to look more white than green now, which is a start at least. There was a dusting last night and it actually came quite a way down so even the lower resorts looked a little wintery this morning. The sun is out today and the temperature is due to creep up over the next few days so that frosting isn't going to stay for long.   Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 30th November 2010, 11:47am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
This morning we were greeted to the fine sight of white all around - some snow at village level. The early morning mist and cloud soon moved on to reveal a beautiful blue sky day. As the morning has progressed the snow on the ground has for the most part melted away but the ski resorts still have a sprinkling down to the lower levels of the runs.

Hakuba 47 is reporting up to 25cm of snow on it's upper areas, but unfortunately that won't be enough to get things moving.

The sun is out, blue skies all around and it is a spectacular day in the valley, currently around 8 degrees. We can probably expect similar conditions tomorrow with a high of around 10 degrees and those conditions may well continue into Thursday. Rain is forecast for Friday with hopefully higher areas getting snowfall but right now it's looking like after that the weekend will see a return of the sun and clearer conditions and relatively mild temperatures.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Tuesday 30th November 2010, 20:21pm
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Opening day for the Furano Ski Resort has unfortunately been pushed back yet again. The town saw a fresh 7cm+ fall this morning, and with off and on snow showers since Sunday, some heavy at times, the slopes are well covered with over 50cm in many places, but unfortunately strong winds towards the top of the mountain have caused quite a few hazardous icy spots to form. The Ski Patrol was out testing the slopes today, but until we can get some fresh powder to cover those tricky places, the resort will not be able to open.

Temperatures are currently at a -2.5, with a forecast low of -5 for the evening. We should see some more snow towards the evening hours of tomorrow.
