Furano Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 7:54am
Weather conditions: Overcast, light snow.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
It has been snowing for most of the last 24 hours and at times very heavily. The wind has been fairly strong at times so it is hard to see how much snow has fallen but it looks like we have had around 15cm in town. The snowfall was especially heavy towards the end of the day yesterday so this morning should be awesome up there.

The wind has died down now but may pick up again later in the day so I would recommend getting up there early and making the most of the current conditions. The wind can make it very cold up there so dress accordingly today.   Read more ...

Nozawa Onsen Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 8:20am
Weather conditions: Clear and sunny.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Low lying mist over the village in Nozawa this morning and there is sunshine at the top. There was no new snow overnight. By the end of the day yesterday the top runs of Yamabiko were all still in relatively good condition but the lower reaches of the resort, particularly the runs leading onto the Hikage Gelende, were in need of some fresh snow. Conditions were spring-like with temperatures as high as +3C. The base depths today are slightly changed with Yamabiko now at 170cm, Uenotaira at 130cm and the bottom of the resort and village with between 40cm to 75cm. Visibility is good and wind is 5km/h. Temperatures on the mountain range from -3C to -5C and it is currently -2C in the village.

The outlook is for today to be mostly clear with the possibility of very light snow this morning. Wednesday the weather will set in again and light snow will develop which will get significantly heavier over Thursday with over 30cm expected.

Naeba Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 8:31am
Weather conditions: Blue skies!
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A cold & frosty start to the day, with not much to report on really. Apart from the lovely blue skies with not a spot of cloud and a warming sun! hmmmmm.... might have to bomb down to Naeba, jump on the gondola to the top and enjoy the view?! Oh its a tough life, but someone has to do it.

Yesterdays temperatures reached a stealthy 8 degrees Celsius after lunchtime. A little warm I'd say for this time of year? Some might say somethings not quite right? Are we starting to think that the Scientists have been right all this time? Might it be our overly huge carbon footprints that have caused the weather systems to not know what to do with themselves anymore? Maybe we could all start focusing on our own individual carbon footprints a little more? Here's an idea: buy local products! Yes, I can just see me with my Tanuki hat and gloves and the bear-skin under garments...

Anyway, here's wishing for a snowy weekend... So I'm pulling out the Yuki Mantras and going to do a spot of chanting... anyone up for a sing-a-long?

Snow on Thursday?? Indeed.   Read more ...

Niseko Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 8:53am
Weather conditions: Cloudy
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The heavier snow forecast for yesterday never eventuated. It snowed on and off during the day and since yesterday mornings 10cms there has been about 2-3cms more.

Yesterday and overnight remained relativly mild and it is about -2 degrees in the village and -6 degrees on the hill. The snow that fell yesterday was a little wetter and thus heavier than the super dry powder we have been experiencing. However it still provided good riding conditions.

At the moment there is a light Southerly wind, although this should pick up during the day. Visibility up high is variable but on the lower half of the mountain is pretty good. Patches of blue sky could be seen above the cloud cover this morning. During the day there may be some light snow showers, otherwise it will be mostly cloudy with the odd period of blue sky. Look out for heavier snow falls on Wednesday morning.    Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 9:00am
Weather conditions: Sun, blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Yesterday was an unseasonally warm and fine day, with temperatures rising to around +6 during the afternoon.

The sun is out again and blue skies all around once more this morning - it is going to be another fine, spring-like day and today temperatures may rise to around 7 or 8 degrees. There is a pleasant wind early this morning but with a forecast of stronger winds later on this afternoon, GALA Yuzawa have made the decision to close for the day (and offering to take people with tickets to the resort to other resorts in the area).

Tomorrow may well be more of the same with sun and very mild temperatures forecast.

Now for the snow news! We still have snowy days lined up for four days from Thursday through to Sunday and so everyone is expectant and hopeful for some decent snowfalls to come our way....   Read more ...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 9:26am
Weather conditions: Sun & blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
There was a bit of frost early on but the sun is out and it is going to be a very fine day here in Shiga Kogen and will probably be very mild by the time early afternoon is with us. It is looking likely that tomorrow will be similar with clouds moving in later on in the day - and then we are set for more snow Thursday through until the end of the weekend. People are hoping for decent dumpage to give the slopes that needed topup.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 10:14am
Weather conditions: Clear blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
A clear blue sky morning in Minakami with no wind and perfect visibility. It looks like the sun is here to stay for today and it should be another clear day tomorrow with some possible gusty periods in the afternoon.

The snow is forecast to arrive late Wednesday night or Thursday morning and should continue for around 3 days bringing a significant dump of snow to the area.

People heading into the backcountry are advised to exercise caution, especially in alpine and tree line areas. The recent warm weather, winds and cool nights have produced a number of unstable layers (there is still some burried suface hoar and wind slabs). Where possible steeper terrain should be avoided especially on Southern and Eastern slopes.    Read more ...

Hakuba Now!

Tuesday 30th January 2007, 10:54am
Weather conditions: Blue skies
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Good morning to all you fellow winter mountain pilgrims. The sky is clear, and the snow is sparkling. The forecast is for a clear sky today. Valley bottom temperatures are forecast to range from -2C to 7C. The same forecast calls for light winds from the south-west with nil precipitation.

The Hira Kawa Snow Study Plot (830m a.s.l.) 0700 hr. reading is:

Sky: Few clouds
Temperature: Present: -5.0 C
Maximum: 6.5 C
Minimum: -6.0 C
Wind: Light north-west
Winds aloft: Light north-west
Precipitation: Nil
Barometer and trend: 924 hPa and steady
Height of new snow in 24 hours (HN24): 0 cm
Total depth of snowpack (HS): 81 cm
Foot penetration: 23 cm
Surface: Decomposed and faceting, size 2.5 mm
Density of surface snow: ~
Crust: 2 cm
Above Tree Line: Considerable

At Tree Line: Moderate

Below Tree Line: Moderate

N.B. The buried surface hoar is now even more deeply buried. Historically light to moderate skiing of terrain has proved to have little to moderate effect on controlling a buried surface hoar instability.

Travel Advisory:
Remember the surface hoar mentioned above.
Several point release avalanches from size one to slightly larger (enough to carry you somewhere but probably not bury a person unless it was to pile up in a particularly nasty terrain trap (e.g. bank of a creek falling into a narrow gulch... gulp). Generally the stability is increasing with a special note to keep thinking reactive buried surface hoar in protected pockets. we have decided to keep the hazard rating at "Moderate" below tree line because with the day-time warming this zone will be most affected by the forecast warming (yesterday the temperature maximum in the shade was 6.5C). So watch the temperature and the terrain features.
