Nozawa Onsen Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 8:19am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
I am happy to report that it is snowing big fat flakes in Nozawa! We were all feeling a bit glum when we got up this morning and rain was falling. The situation seemed to improve by the second though, and now it couldn't be better. If this continues for today and tomorrow as forecast, it will be a very happy New Year.

Yesterday was slush central up on the mountain. Although lift lines are still not too bad apart from the first gondolas and the Uenotaira slope, dodging bum sliders and snow plowers is becoming hard work.   Read more ...

Yuzawa Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 8:47am
Weather conditions: Snow, cloud
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Up until a short while ago it was rain/sleet at town level but it has just a short while ago turned into snow. Snow is forecast for the rest of the day (and throughout tomorrow and beyond) - and hopefully a fair amount of it. By later this evening, the region is forecast to get between 25cm-50cm of fresh snow for us all to enjoy. Lets hope they are right!

Kagura, Naeba and Gala Yuzawa were all reporting snow earlier on as well. So while this morning might not be best conditions, things should be looking up as this snow starts to settle.

It's about 1 degree at the moment and looks set to stay around that level and get colder later on with tomorrow forecast to be probably boasting more winter-like temperatures.

Fingers crossed for all that snow!

PM update:

People are a bit disappointed here tonight as the big snow we were hoping for did not really turn out - not much snow to report unfortunately this evening down at town level. It was snowing this morning but then weakened in the afternoon. It seems that many other places in Niigata, especially to the north, have got more snow today that we have.

BUT - heavy snow looks very likely for tomorrow. Honest. The weather men are telling us that. 20-40cm from now until 9am tomorrow morning is what they are promising, so we are really willing them to be right!

We'll let you know tomorrow morning...

Shiga Kogen Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 8:54am
Weather conditions: Snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The snow is back this morning! A good 5-10cm of freshies waiting for us on the tops of cars early on and the snow is falling now with a fair amount forecast over the next 12 hours and beyond. Looks like this might be the big dump we have all been waiting for. Those snow depths haven't changed yet but hopefully by tomorrow we'll see the difference.

While it is colder than yesterday it is still relatively mild for the time of year, but it is looking likely that those temperatures will drop as the day progresses and tomorrow will be more like what we are used to - so conditions should hopefully be really good for the New Year.

Nighta areas open tonight:

- Sun Valley
- Maruike
- Mammoth
- Ichinose Family
- Ichinose Diamond
- Yakebitaiyama

Niseko Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 9:20am
Weather conditions: Sunny in town.\r\nCloudy with snow expected on the mountain.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After a shocking day yesterday, there was hope that all the weather would turn to snow but instead the clouds cleared, cold temperatures froze the moisture and this morning, Niseko is an ice skating rink. At least the rain has stopped and skiers and boarders are heading to the slopes after a day of relaxation.

They will encounter firm and icy conditions on what the resort is calling "compacted" snow. According to the Niseko Avalanche Information, "weather is forecasted to turn bad this afternoon with strong westerly wind & snow". They point out that when the snow comes, avalanche danger will extremely high as fresh snow will pile up on a hard surface. All peak gates will be closed for a while.

Riders are advised not to duck ropes or ski in gullies where snow could collect.   Read more ...

Myoko Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 9:25am
Weather conditions: SNOWING STEADILY
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
The winter front is here to stay for some time, and as of 7am this morning the snow levels are at +10cm and rising fast. Tonight will be -7 and powdery dry. The snow plows are fueled up and ready in the village and the powder's flying on the slopes.

Today's recommendation: the TOP of SUGINOHARA and ALL of SEKI ONSEN
Why: the snows are just starting, and they get the brunt of it.

Here are your Myoko area levels for today:

Naeba Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 10:06am
Weather conditions: White Sky
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
Looking out the window this morning and seeing .5 of a cm dusted on the ground was all to unconvincing when remembering yesterdays weather forecasts. But now, as I speak the snow is really dumping. There is now 6cm on the ground and its still coming down hard.

It continued raining yesterday throughout the day, stopping very occasionally while the temperature sat around zero for most of the day dropping to below zero around 6pm. It stayed relatively warm through the night though with the temperature now sitting down on -4 degrees. All gondolas are running at Naeba this morning. There is a slight to moderate breeze with a white sky.   Read more ...

Minakami Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 10:58am
Weather conditions: Overcast with light snow
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --

The snow has at last hit. It started falling at 8:56 this morning comming down pretty hard at first but has since lightened up. It looks like the Minakami upper mountains should receive around 30cm of fresh snow today, with snow forecast everday for the next week.

The conditions this morning will still be average as a result of yesterdays nationwide rain, but the snow conditions should be coming right by late this afternoon. Houdaigi, Tenjindaira and Minakami Kogen would be the best areas for the next 2-3 days for snow conditions. Okutone, Norn, White valley and Oana ski areas should be good from the 2nd onwards.   Read more ...

Furano Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 11:24am
Weather conditions: blue skies, warm temperatures. slight snow melt.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
After yesterdays stormy conditions with the entire mountain on wind hold from early afternoon the storm continued into the evening.

Winds have died down today and blue skies make today a stark contrast to yesterday.

Temperatures are a little warm today, with some snow melt in town and the slopes are a little icy.

Snow is expected to fall for a few days beginning tonight when the temperatures cool down again.

Holiday makers have flocked to Furano for New Year. The slopes are busy (relatively) with lots of activity in town.

Yesterdays storm brought a lot of snow to Tomamu. They have been struggling with their base so far this year, so its great for the area that the resort got a big dump.

Hakuba Now!

Sunday 30th December 2007, 19:57pm
Weather conditions: Intense snow 5 cm per hour.
New snowfall: --
Snow depth: --
What a day it has turned out to be. What started as 10cm overnight has turned into 60cm plus at 19:00 Sunday night. It would look as if the last day of the year may be one of the best for the year as the snow is not slowing down and accumulating rapidly.

Expect waist deep powder in the untouched areas and at least knee deep over groomed on the runs. There has been very little wind to speak of and temperatures are still dropping and this means that conditions will be excellent for deep light powder on all resorts in Hakuba.

It looks as though the snow will continue into the new year so if you wanted to try out those new Fat Powder boards you just got, now is the time.

Some of the lifts in the valley may be slower to open tomorrow with all the snow clearing around the lifts needed and avalanche control on Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47, Tsugaike and Hakuba Cortina.

Backcountry Travel Advisory:

Extreme caution should be taken by anyone planning to go into the back country again today. Travel in the backcountry is ill advised as all slopes are being rapidly loaded with snow that is over riding yesterdays rain crust. There will be definite instabilities in the new snow and possible slabs from the Rain crust / New snow interface. Slogging up through 1 metre plus of deep powder makes for a bit of a mission as well. Not a day for hiking in the backcountry. A great day to stay in bounds and get some great face shots.
