Lovely blue skies over Niseko this morning and less wind with all of the (scheduled) lifts moving. Today is Monday but a national holiday and there's now more than a few people in Niseko for general sightseeing as well as the skiing and snowboarding. The temperature here today might rise to around 20 degrees.
Looking at the forecast we can pretty much expect similar conditions tomorrow, with perhaps a bit more wind. After 'normal' weekdays tomorrow and Wednesday, we are back to national holidays at the end of the week for effectively a 4 day last weekend of the season in Niseko.
Current lift operations (30th April 2012 @ 9am):
Grand Hirafu: Ace Quad Lift No2 King Hooded Triple Lift #3 King Lift #4 The Hirafu Gondola open on 30th April, and also from 3rd May until 6th May.
Not quite as nice as yesterday but still a pretty warm day here in Minakami. There's been cloud over us since this morning and it looks like it is here to stay. The forecast is not looking as good as it did earlier in the week either with rain due from tomorrow until the weekend with the possibility of heavy rain on Wednesday/Thursday. Still two lifts open up at the top for skiers/boarders.
Phew it really warmed up yesterday in Niigata - highs of over 25C and approaching 30C a bit to the north of the Yuzawa region - and didn't really cool down too much overnight with a low of around 12C. This morning at 9am it was already 20C in town with Kagura reporting a temperature of 11C. Lots of people up at Kagura yesterday could be seen chilling out with some beers and taking it all in - while lots of other people were on the slopes... it was a busy one out there!
It's not going to warm up quite as much today and it's less sunny and bright and more of an overcast sky. With the very warm temperatures, the snow has been very quickly melting from the slopes around town and now most of the lower slopes around the town are mostly without any snow.
Just to recap on the Golden Week situation. Today is a national holiday in Japan. Tomorrow and Wednesday are 'normal days' and then Thursday and Friday are national holidays again. Next weekend will also be the last of the season for Naeba, Kandatsu Kogen and the Tashiro area of Kagura, leaving only Kagura (via Mitsumata) open. I think we can expect it to be a busy one.
It's good to see the great snow cover we have at Kagura still this season - I imagine that they will be able to remain open and operating the Mitsumata lifts for longer than usual this season as there is still complete snow cover on those runs as well at the moment. (Once the snow melts away from Mitsumata they need to start operating a shuttle bus to get people to the Kagura Gondola, but that's certainly a while off yet this season).
Official resort snow depths @ Monday 30th April 12, AM: Kagura - Mitsumata: 300cm Kagura - Tashiro: 250cm GALA Yuzawa: 120cm (upper)
Open until 6th May: Kandatsu Kogen Naeba GALA Yuzawa [Central Area, North Area] Kagura (Tashiro)
