A little sun coming in from the southeast
Light snow is falling for the first time at base level!
But I do have to say, "light" snow - it's not accumulating yet.
Still, it was very warm yesterday at the official ceremony opening Akakura Kanko Ski Area, so it's good to see the snow. A lot of people were wondering when we were going to get some....
Snow is on the forecast now into next week, so hopefully soon we'll have more news on that front.
Official opening dates: Akakura Onsen and Akakura Kanko: December 20 Ikenotaira: December 19 Suginohara: December 20 Seki Onsen: As soon as there's enough snow Read more ...

At last, we have some more snow. Not much mind, just a dusting really but it started falling early this morning and hopefully it will continue over the next few days and into next week. Different forecasts seem to differ on what to expect, so I'll just sit back and see what happens I think. Keep an eye on the resort pages of SnowJapan for a 6 day forecast that is updated multiple times daily, here's the page for Grand Hirafu for example:
Will have to wrap up well, because it has got real cold all of a sudden - well, certainly compared with the last week or so!
We obviously need a nice big delivery of snow to get the ski lifts into action.
Let's see what I can report to you tomorrow morning!
Planned opening dates for the different resort areas on the mountain:
Niseko Grand Hirafu - will open as soon as there's enough snow Niseko Annupuri Kokusai - will open as soon as there's enough snow Niseko Village - Monday 1st December Niseko Hanazono - Saturday 6th December Read more ...

Mostly cloudy, sun!
I was hoping to get up and be able to report some snow this morning.
Unfortunately, took a look out of the window at 7am and... the sun was out! For a time just before there was lots of clear blue sky opening up especially just to the north in Minamiuonuma. What's all that about then!?
OK so let's rewind a bit. It's definitely colder than yesterday, but then again yesterday was borderline warm. As of 10am it's around 4 degrees in town.
Kagura updated their report at 7:30am when they reported a temperature of -4 degrees but missed out mentioning new snow. The truth is that there was probably just a dusting up there, certainly nothing substantial and a look at the webcams from Kagura doesn't really show any snow on the trees at all. I think they would say themselves that they are borderline struggling to keep open right at the moment with that thin strip of snow on the main run, helped along by a daily portion of man-made snow, and in real need of a good snowfall.
I was actually waiting a bit to post this report in the hope that we might suddenly get attacked by the winter snowstorm but it isn't happening just at the moment. As I write this the sun is shining down but there does look like more cloud building up to the south. The forecast still has us down for sleet/rain/snow today, so take your best guess!
I think the best thing to do is to leave it until tomorrow and post a fresh report then.
I have updated the official resort opening date list below with the resorts in neighbouring Minamiuonuma. A handful of those are right next to Yuzawa and just 10 minutes away from Echigo Yuzawa Station, so as close to the centre of Yuzawa as some of the skijo actually in Yuzawa. Of course, you can check them all out on SnowJapan in the main Snow Resorts section of the site. Here's lists of the resorts in both Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma:
Kagura: A 600m run at the main Kagura area is open, access via Mitsumata Ropeway. A shuttle bus takes people from the top of the Ropeway to the base of the Kagura Gondola, which then takes them up to the base of the main Kagura area. The Kagura Number 1 Romance pair lift is operating to service the open course.
So, you want to know how much snow we have right? Well... just a bit really. A few cm up higher on the slopes - Happo-one reporting 3cm - but nothing sticking down at the village. Earlier on it was trying to snow here but strong winds meant that it was all whisked away (somewhere!) and it hasn't really amounted to anything at all. At the moment it's just cloudy really with some of that wind hanging on.
But. It is definitely colder though this morning and we are still on the verge of some apparently decent snowfall according to all of the forecasts - snow each day through Sunday in fact. So it would be fantastic if that happened and obviously depending on how much falls some of the ski lifts could get moving as soon as possible. All obvious comments there, sorry!
I'll update you on the latest in my report tomorrow morning.
It seems we have a bit of a bug at times with the temperatures showing on the reports. For yesterdays report, we inputted 10 degrees as the temperature at base but for some reason it has been showing 1 degree. My technically minded colleague is on the case and we hope to get that fixed up so that it won't happen again. Sorry about that.
And many thanks to the folk who mailed us and bring that to our attention. We see the statistics that tell us that thousands of people read this report every day, but sometimes it's good to get some real feedback -- even if it is to let us know about a mistake!
Planned opening dates :
Hakuba 47 - as soon as there's enough snow Hakuba Goryu - as soon as there's enough snow Happo-one - as soon as there's enough snow Tsugaike Kogen - as soon as there's enough snow Kashimayari Sports Village - early December Hakuba Sanosaka - mid December Hakuba Norikura Onsen - mid December Hakuba Cortina - Saturday 13th December Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field - Friday 19th December Read more ...
Nozawa Onsen Now!
Tuesday 2nd December 2014, 10:50am
Cloud, blue sky, some sun
It looks like the upper areas of the mountain just got a slight dusting of snow overnight last night, down to around the Paradise area of the resort.
The forecast is still looking as promising as it was yesterday, but for now we have quite a bit of blue sky over Nozawa and the region and the sun is shining down on us. Perhaps the winter front just got a bit 'delayed' and will be with us soon.
One thing for sure it is definitely colder than it was yesterday. We nearly got down to zero early morning but this afternoon we'll probably see a high around 4 degrees in the village.
Something tells me the forecasts are a bit difficult to read at the moment. I'll give you another update tomorrow morning.

Morning from Zao.
Snowing properly this morning with 10cm or so of fresh snow on the ground here in the village areas and more on the way over the next few days and maybe into the weekend as well. I have heard some reports of 60cm of snow just in the next 24 hours. That would be nice if true! A few days of that kind of snowfall and I would expect lifts to be up and running quite quickly.
Proper opening to the season just around the corner by the looks....
From today we expected to see white and though there has been some flurry it hasn't been enough to make an effect just yet. However snow is expected from now on and would expect this week to be the real start of the winter season.
Snow is late this year but bear with it and it won't be long before we are swimming in it. Read more ...
